Another standard MFC 2014 performance. Very good inside, clearances and contested possessions either in our favour or close enough, and manful work all day from the stronger bodied types. However, far too slow with ball in hand, way too many errors, and passengers all afternoon.

Jetta was amazing. Simply amazing. I'm proud to have an AA-level small defender in our side, one who has done it tough (being re-rookied) and has made it work.

Very, very pleased to see Gawn bring his VFL form to the AFL. He's clearly worked on his marking and his body-work in the forward line and it paid off. He had his defenders beaten so many times yesterday. He knows where to lead, too. Kicking at goal needs work, but with another pre-season and more fitness, we may have found a quality weapon.

Cross added so much to our midfield. Tyson was great again in the clearances. N Jones was good, but he can do better. Recently I've felt he's been trying to get the dinky out the back kick/handpass too much and running himself into trouble a bit more.

Barry showed enough to suggest he can be a long-term player. Michie also played a lot better than we've seen.

At the other end of the spectrum, JKH was terrible - didn't look interested at any point in the day. Pathetic display from him. M Jones was also rubbish.

Disagree. He looked lost to me, but if he was near an opponent, he would put up a good chase. I think the way Hawthorn moved the ball yesterday was an absolute lesson for our players. I hope our FD point out how we were dissected time and again. Move the bloody ball quicker. Anyway, JKH had no influence, but the ball wasn't in our forwardline and he doesn't have the tank yet for the midfield. This means, he'll struggle to impact any game, unless we're getting inside 50s. When we do, his clean hands, good decision making and ability to keep his feet are an absolute asset.

I get what you're saying but we still had 40 I50s, so he had the opportunity to impact the game far more than what he did. 4 disposals for an entire game of footy is terrible.

I agree. 4 disposals is ordinary, but we barely had space in there and IMO our delivery was pretty ordinary going in there. Most of the time, he was chasing Hawthorn defenders off half back. I dunno, maybe I'm making excuses? I just don't subscribe to the opinion that he didn't want to be out there.

I must admit I didn't watch much of the game but the emphasis of this discussion being on an 18yo getting 4 possessions is misplaced. It's the whole thing that Roos was saying at the start of the year that we expect too much of our younger players every week. He's young, he's going to have a bad game, I couldn't give a stuff because I know that if Roos feels that the best learning curve is for him to go back to the VFL then so be it but given his track record it wouldn't surprise me if JKH fronts up next week vs GWS and is given a chance to make amends.

The Watts bashing is predictable, and in some instances not wrong, but the school of thought that I subscribe to is as frustrating as he is he is still the best person we have at the releasing kick from half back to half forward. His inability to tackle likely won't improve a whole lot, someone suggested he needs to get to the gym and work on his upper body, honestly I reckon we've got as much muscle we can get on him. The difference between him and say Pederson is the desire to tackle, I can't see that being altered a whole lot.

What little I saw wasn't horrific, last week was. Even that chain of handballs that gave me multiple heart attacks was at least a sign that they can on occasion take the game on. Dawes is still a problem, but at least he got more of the ball.

My B&F tip has changed with Tyson to finish runner up to Jones, and honestly I think it could be closer than some would expect given his last month. Please god let us have this one turn into a star!

I don't subscribe to that either but he certainly didn't outwardly make the effort yesterday to disprove that theory. Just had an off day.

Imo, Casey is doing jack for development.

I'd rather we had our own VFL team. But I don't blame Casey for any lack of development. Our players are with them for about 3 hours out of 168 per week. Any lack of development is happening at the MFC or individual player level.

Lions are a rubbish team....that's why i was furious with last week's effort. We are still miles away from getting ourselves off the bottom and into "average" competitive territory.

Having said that, i was expecting a route yesterday of up to 120 points or more IF we didn't put our best effort on the park. 10 goals if we did. 50 wasn't a bad effort (compared to last week's only though) given how many non AFL level players are on our list atm.

Hawthorn never drop off from giving their all pretty much every week year in and out. Hopefully we will get there one season, preferably this side of 2020.

I can't help but feel disappointed by Dawes, I see him working his ass off with constant leads and runs to effect pressure and stuff, but a bloke of his age, getting paid good money, I really wish he would impact the score far more than he does.
