DeeSpencer 26,716 Posted June 11, 2014 Posted June 11, 2014 no, he didn't, but a couple of good contested marks. But lets be honest, lets take the rose coloured glasses off. Dawes is not a good mark, he gets to the ball, flat out, great attack, leads well, has great timing, but has hands like bricks most of the time. His main problem is he can't jump for the ball either. Doesn't leap at it at all well. But whilst marking is an important part of a key forwards job it's not the be all and end all and Buddy Franklin is a pretty good CHF who can't take a strong overhead mark to save himself. The positive with Dawes is he makes such an impact he makes up for his lack of marking prowess. But what we do need is at least 2 other forwards who can mark around him and hopefully that's Frawley or Hogan and Pedersen or Gawn possibly with Howe as well long term.

Dawes is not a good mark, he gets to the ball, flat out, great attack, leads well, has great timing, but has hands like bricks most of the time. That is an undersell. He got terrible delivery and Gawn used his extra 4 inches to great effect on Monday on a couple of occasions. Make no mistake who is more important to the team. I could easily construct a team without Gawn. Dawes is the reason our attack went from an F to a C from the Carlton game onwards.
Nasher 33,686 Posted June 11, 2014 Posted June 11, 2014 Yep. Third game this year, 19 possessions, 7 marks. Doesn't make every post a winner yet, but is most certainly holding his own based on Monday. Classic knee jerk Demonland whipping boy seems to be Maxy's lot at the moment. Please read last week's "changes vs Collingwood" thread and re-consider whether people thinking of removing Gawn for team balance reasons is "knee jerk".
old dee 24,093 Posted June 11, 2014 Posted June 11, 2014 please god let us beat these pr1cks Doubt she has much to do with it C and B If she did The bombers would have been thrown out of the Competition months ago.

chook fowler 19,784 Posted June 11, 2014 Posted June 11, 2014 I wonder if Jodie being taken off at half time for Casey after racking up 20+ possessions may be a sign that he is in this week. Roos pressed re tired youngsters seems to suggest Salem and JKH will be rested. Kent must be a likely starter. Would also like to see Clisby for Terlich - much better decision maker and ball user.

Was mainly for him to be emergency for Monday, but at the same time it indicates he's at the front of line for selection. After reading the VFL comments I'm glad to see the coaches rated Kent and he'd be another. Riley not far off and as I said earlier Dom Barry wouldn't be a complete shock. I think Brett Allison is a fan. Like the idea of Evans tagging as well at some stage if we want to use Cross in another role and McKenzie doesn't take the job. Clisby unfortunately is still 2 weeks at least from VFL return.
rjay 25,434 Posted June 11, 2014 Posted June 11, 2014 Again some well written player reviews from Brett Allison. http://www.melbournefc.com.au/news/2014-06-11/vfl-player-review-round-nine
rolly 149 Posted June 11, 2014 Posted June 11, 2014 out: gawn, jkh, salem in: kent, mckenzie, riley i would be happy to try blease for terlich but dont think there will be 4 changes kent- back to back bog= must be picked mckenzie-strung together several weeks of good form, cant ask for much more than 23touches at half time riley- come on as sub to add late game aggression at contests and tackle pressure
Adam The God 30,767 Posted June 11, 2014 Posted June 11, 2014 If ever a game needed us to be "top heavy with talls" it's when playing Essendon. They'll be playing Daniher, Bellchambers, Ryder, Carlisle, Hooker, Hurley and Fletcher (if fit). That's a lot of tall timber to combat and we're playing a very small backline. Our defenders have played exceptionally well but size will be a problem next weekend unless we move one of Pedersen or Frawley back. So I'd keep all the talls in. Salem looks tired, and Terlich and JKH each played their worst game for the club to date. All have credits in the bank for mine, but if they are tired or injured each could be rested (which doesn't necessarily mean playing with Casey). Given the need to boost the height in defence, Terlich might find he gives way to allow Frawley to go back and I suspect Salem needs a rest. The ins I suspect would be those with the most compelling form from Casey. I don't know who they are, but suspect based on the way the senior side has been picked to date it's out of Kent, McKenzie, Riley and Toumpas. I dunno about having to combat the Essendon talls. I think they'll get shown up if they play all of them. The ball will be wet, with the slippery/dewy conditions of a 4.40 start. This certainly hamstrung us on Monday.
Nasher 33,686 Posted June 11, 2014 Posted June 11, 2014 Final thoughts now upon reading VFL reviews: In: Kent, McKenzie Out: Salem, Gawn.
JackVineyForPresident 310 Posted June 11, 2014 Posted June 11, 2014 It's simple for me.. I'd give JKH one more chance.. Out: Salem In: Kent Pretty similar positions, give Salem a 2 week rest.. he'll be back
mauriesy 7,445 Posted June 11, 2014 Posted June 11, 2014 Would also like to see Clisby for Terlich - much better decision maker and ball user.Mitch Clisby (quadriceps) – 2 weeks 1. Gawn goes out if Jamar is not injured, otherwise he stays and Jamar goes out (probably means Pedersen does a little more 'relief' rucking as Gawn will need more rests). Bring in Jordie McKenzie to worry the bejesus out of Heppell, who might not have had to face a hard tag much and faces more responsibility with Watson out. 2. Kent for one of JKH or Salem, whoever stays is the sub.
picket fence 18,229 Posted June 11, 2014 Posted June 11, 2014 Out Salem, Gawn, JKH In Kent, Riley and Blease! Start rolling a few Dices I think!
Barney Rubble 1,576 Posted June 12, 2014 Posted June 12, 2014 Again some well written player reviews from Brett Allison. http://www.melbournefc.com.au/news/2014-06-11/vfl-player-review-round-nine Based on the review, there are only 2 players that are putting their hand up. Kent & McKenzie So based on that Kent in for Salem. McKenzie (tagger) on I/C drop anyone of the second tier mids. On last weeks form Bail. I would also like to see Cross go to HBF and release Howe up forward. Lack of marks I50 killed us on Monday.
mrtwister 652 Posted June 12, 2014 Posted June 12, 2014 Not sure if it's been mentioned but I saw Gawn in somebody's best players over the past couple of days. In the Hun maybe? Gutsy call to drop a guy that some considered to be in our best 5 players last week.
Lucifers Hero 40,752 Posted June 12, 2014 Posted June 12, 2014 Roos said a few players were tiring so a few changes wouldn't surprise as Ess have a 7 day break and we have 5. The 5 days vs 7 may make it tough for us to win.
ManDee 7,404 Posted June 12, 2014 Posted June 12, 2014 Out Salem, Gawn, JKH In Kent, Riley and Blease! Start rolling a few Dices I think! Rolling the dice is plural. The singular is rolling the die. Otherwise I agree with outs. In - McKenzie Kent & Riley.

Bobby McKenzie 2,408 Posted June 12, 2014 Posted June 12, 2014 Jumper numbers 2, 4, 6, 7, 8, 12, 14, 18, 21, 23, 25, 31, 38, 40, 44, 45 and 46 are all firmly entrenched in the side at the moment - I'm disregarding any post that suggests leaving out any of those players unless there's strong justification (haven't seen any yet). Jumper 20 should also be in that group, but he's currently in such woeful form that I'm not sure and 39 is well on the way. The only realistic candidates for omission for mine are Salem, JKH and Gawn for mine. Number 39 is not well on the way, he has made it! I have been so impressed by his toughness, coolness and fantastic disposal by hand and foot. What an improved player he has become.

I have been so impressed by his toughness, coolness and fantastic disposal by hand and foot. What an improved player he has become. I totally agree Bobby. It's actually an interesting question: Jetta, Pedersen, Dunn or Bail for most improved under Roosy? Fair to say that they are all former 'fringe' players who are now thriving. Roos is an absolute master at this.
