There is a lot of Luke Hodge in Christian Salem. It's not surprising to hear that he has tried to emulate Hodge's style. Very, very similar kicking style.

Please don't start with the comparisons.

It has never ended well in the past:

Gysberts - Judd

Morton - Goodes

Lucas Cook - Jonathon Brown

I have to say I was impressed with his build on the weekend. For months I've heard that he was slightly built and would take a long time to get his body up to scratch. He looks a lot bigger than I expected. Add to that that his skills appear to be every bit as good as advertised and he's a lot harder at the ball than expected and I'm pretty damn happy.

I had the same reaction - I don't want to jump to conclusions after one game but I loved his kicking and that goal where he kept his balance and seemed to play as a bigger player then he is.

I will keep expectations at bay for now as we have had several players play good first games.

Not everyone thought that.

I never rated any of those three. And plenty of others didn't rate them either.

Not everyone gets excited by the numbers game. It's how you win and what you do with your possessions.

I've already seen in just over a quarter of footy that Salem has far more potential than those three. In just over a quarter of footy, I have witnessed a coolness and belief in ability, a precise left foot, sound decision making, an intent and hardness around the footy, and most importantly in my eyes - a desire to perform sacrificial acts of desperation for the team.

Salem possesses far more many football specific attributes than any of those three. And I've seen it in a quarter of footy. This isn't about talking a player up. It's just the damn truth.

Never saw any of those comparisons being made either I have to say.

Lucas Cook to Jonno Brown is a comparison you might hear from a ranting individual on a street corner with a bible tucked under his arm, but nowhere else.

Was just joking - but some examples were nearly if not just as bad

The Cook one is hilarious.

A lot of the comparisons are hilarious if you take the time to look back at those threads

A promising debut from Salem. This kid has the second best footwork that I've seen to date.

As for the best - how about we draft this kid? A small forward for the future?

That is hilarious. You sure that's not Cyrol Rioli from a couple of years ago. If he was a Dees player he would probably do this standing on the spot without actually taking off.

"The Cook over Darling selection makes a lot of sense and BP clearly rated Cook a better fit ahead of guys like Watson and Luke Mitchell (who I liked). Anyone else think he plays a bit like Pavlich?"

That was only on the first page.

In fairness - the comparison was made on the predraft -2 minutes highlight package. This is the highlight reel of these juniors and they all look pretty good.

Have you ever seen a highlight package of a footballer going into the draft that you don't like ?

I don't think anyone compared to him Pav or Brown once he played a season at Casey.

Is there any thing he is not involved in? (Watts)

Agreed. I think it's natural for fans to take a look at a fresh newbie and make an off the cuff comparison, more out of hope than anything else.

Agreed. What I also noticed was that he runs to the right places. Some players just have that magnetism. They attract the footy. I think Salem will be one of these players.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

WAYNE WUSSELL'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Rehab: Lever, Spargo, McAdam, Lindsay, Brown Sinnema is excellent by foot and has a decent vertical leap. Windsor is training with the Defenders. Windsor's run won't be lost playing off half back. In 19 games in 2024 he kicked 8 goals as a winger. I see him getting shots at g

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
