Players to target at the end of the year

Recommended Posts

Before the game last weekend i had lunch with the parents of a Gws player (friends of a family friend). I asked them if they had any info of any players being linked to the Dees and they where VERY confident that Melbourne are very interested in Sam Frost & he was keen also.

No...Collingwood would jump at a 2nd round pick. Way overs.

I love the way he goes about his football but he is purely a grunt man, we need to add some real hard edged class.

I don't think a mid 30's pick is overs for Goldsack...May seem that way because we could get him for nothing, but that would dilute the Frawely compo.

The funny thing about footy forums is that most people want to trade spuds for good players ie Nicholson and 4th rounder for Lewis jetta.

Gotta give up something decent to get something decent

Trouble is I don't think Goldsack is something decent, he is a really good honest trier, really good trier, works as hard as anyone as a defensive player but not what you would spend any currency on.

Really? Ridiculous commentary.

Would be a walk up start in this [censored] team.

Of course he is a walk up start, doesn't mean he is the best fit.

I love what he does for the Pies but he's not what we need to spend currency on, we need players that can run, attack and kick. Trading a pick in the low 30's on Goldsack would be just plain dumb, something like giving pick 20 for Dawes.

Anything that improves the list is not dumb.

Having Tapscott, Blease, Evans etc on your list is dumb.

I think you will find those players gone come end of season.

So then who do we replace them with. I think it's dumb paying overs for players and I think we would be paying overs for Goldsack if we gave up a 2nd or 3rd round pick for him. Yes he is an improvement on the players you mentioned and a number on our list but not a marked improvement.

We desperately need to add some real class, some run and carry and some real KPP. He's not any of that, so whilst he is an improvement he doesn't really help our list.

Fair dinkum, if he's gettable, you snap him up!

How many players do we have knocking the door down to come to this basket case club?

And, I believe if he comes, he will improve the list.

I have no idea if he would come to melbourne but he would be much better than what we currently have.

Look at roos's history when trading people like Richards and Jolly etc in, at the time looked to be overs, but really he's never put a lot of currency on a pick number.

At the end of the day melbourne need a number of experienced players, and if someone like Goldsack was interested to play for our team you'd need to look at bringing him in.

Really key structural positions they play, Goldsack doesn't. Roos also brings in players like McGlinn and Kennedy and that's what I would be expecting to see more of this year. Tyson was the first, if Michie stacks up he will be another.

If we were going to spend a pick on an older player it would be better spent on someone with the class of Malceski and even then I would rather find a younger version.

Goldsack is 193cm, 92kg and only 27 years old.

Has been a very good defensive forward this year for the pies and can play as a marking forward.

He also plays the style that suits a Paul Roos game plan, hits the contest hard and tackles.

I agree that we need much more than him, although am not sure why you don't see any value in getting a guy like Goldsack?

We have a void of good players in the 25-30 year age bracket and we cant rely on our younger players to step up consistently next year.

Add to the fact that he can play both ends of the ground and i think his versatility would add a bit to the team.

If he could Collingwood would be using him as a marking forward, they are desperate to have someone help Cloke.

I think the value in Goldsack or lack of is more about what other options are around and what he would cost. Some of our other early trades have cost us big time. If Goldsack came as a PSD or late pick maybe but then again you would have to measure it against who else is available.

Fair point...i'll trust Taylor, Roos and Viney to find the right mix as who really knows who is up for trade at the end of the season.

I never thought that we'd land Tyson last year & i hope we can get a couple of beauties this trade period and actually start to move up the ladder.

Oh and by the way, it's good to have a conversation with someone who has a different opinion who doesn't resort to negative name calling or d*ck measuring like a lot of other people do on here. cheers rjay.

Maybe silly, but if we can't find someone of the Daniel Cross quality as a delisted free agent I think we should consider Andrew Raines. He'd be another who wouldn't help with the kicking skills but he's super fit and has experience as a hard running midfielder.

Guess it depends just how bad our list is rated and how much we take out of the drafts.

I'm yet to see any more promising delisted players of the Cross or Riley level.

Interesting article in the sun re: tall players other clubs may be interested in:

http://www.heraldsun.com.au/sport/afl/top-10-key-position-players-afl-clubs-will-be-seeking-out-during-the-trade-period/story-fn6cisdj-1227037854128

Interested to hear other posters thoughts on who might be worth a look. Knowing that Roos doesn't like drafting talls (and he has said we won't take McCartin or Wright if they are available) do you think we might make a move for one or two of these, particularly with Chip probably moving on at the end of the year?

I reckon this is now becoming a Chinese whisper.

They’re billing the Brisbane Lions as a sleeping giant — the best team outside the top eight —and based on their form this month they’re a definite contender for September AFL action. Which is not exactly the best of news if you happen to be Melbourne, the visiting team this week up at the Gabba.  Even though they are placed ahead of their opponent on the AFL table, and they managed to stave off defeat in their last round victory over North Melbourne, this week’s visitors to the Sunshi

Casey’s season continued to drift into helplessness on Sunday when they lost another home game by a narrow margin, this time six points, in their Round 13 clash with North Melbourne’s VFL combination. The game was in stunning contrast to their last meeting at the same venue when Casey won the VFL Wildcard Match by 101 points. Back then, their standout players were Brodie Grundy and James Jordon who are starring in the AFL with ladder leaders, the Sydney Swans (it turned out to be their last

    LIFE SUPPORT by Whispering Jack

With Melbourne’s season hanging on a thread, Saturday night’s game against North Melbourne unfolded like a scene in a hospital emergency department.  The patient presented to the ward in a bad way. Doctors and nurses pumped life-saving medication into his body and, in the ensuing half hour, he responded with blood returning to his cheeks as he stirred back to life. After a slight relapse, the nurses pumped further medication into the bloodstream and the prognosis started looking good as the
