Ok I'm not usually one to bring up our departed players and take joy in their downs, but we have done so incredibly well out of Col leaving under FA and essentially trading in for Vince. Col has always had discipline problems and now it's got him into trouble while playing WAFL where he's been given a 3 match suspension, which he's defending and could be increased to 4 weeks.

I will add I take no joy in Colin's situation but I more want to point out that the club was quite highly criticised for losing another to FA but it's fair to say that in this instance we have actually done very well out of it.

3 more matches he'll miss for Freo. At least this gives him some time to prepare to miss every other Freo game.

Chased easy success, and even that is too hard for him.

I feel for Col but he does bring it on himself.
He NOW has the chance of a lifetime to break into one of the strongest football clubs in Australia and he is pizzing it down the drain.
I can see him and Beamer in 20 years time still hanging around the bar at Motel nightclub trying to pick up plastic fantastic bimbos (who have long since moved onto the next crop of braindead party boy footballers) while most of their contemporaries are at home with the missus and with their feet up on the couch (and accolades in the trophy cabinet).

You're a nicer bloke than I am, Pates.

I said when he defected that he was not good enough to break into Freo's midfield and, so far, I've been right.

A pox upon, I say.

His run at Freo so far is much deserved. and may it long continue.

Posted

Think we clearly ended up winning in his defection. Vince or Sylvia? Not even a question for me.

Can imagine other players riling him up in the WAFL, telling him he's not good enough for Freo. He wouldn't take those comments lightly, but his problem is he doesn't use criticism as ammunition to try harder. Lazy, lazy, lazy.

I don't think Roos fought too hard to keep him.

IIRC, Roos words went something like "Col has done the right thing by himself."

Posted

yep i think Col has had a reality check. I knew Ross would be tougher on him. He had it pretty easy at melbourne and thought he could just cruise through.

Well guess what not at freo. You have to work harder and the fact he couldnt get in the team when they are missing Fyfe, Barlow and walters missing says something about his form.

Also do you think Beamer is enjoying brisbane still? he'd fell like he is back at melbourne with the thrashing they have got.

I remember my old man chatting to an uncle of Cols a few years ago who said he was a d!ckhead and while having great talent had zero between the ears and would never be the player he thought he was.... Damning from a relative.

When we found out that we would get a low 20's pick we feigned our disappointment appropriately.

correct.

and he's looking at three weeks out, is that right? that was what was said on footy classified (just watched it), but in the media they're saying the number of weeks isn't specified by the wafl until after the verdict is handed down.

I know its a different administration but we similarly shouldve got rid of trapper johnstone years earlier and hadnt, similar attitudes only one had performed far more consistently than the other ( u choose). Attitude can be the disease or cure and i think the right call had definitely been made. So has anyone heard how Ricky Pettard is travelling......

At least TJ won a Bluey. Col never came close.

I follow the WAFL with a fair bit of interest, and to be fair to him Sylvia has done well in a couple of games, but not enough to impact the result one way or another. What has been fun is the change in tone of my Freo supporting mates - when they got Col through FA, I remember two of them in particular talking about how he would be the missing link for them this year, a la Brian Lake at the Hawks  . Today their discussion was how to reverse his 'Melbournisation'

Initially got 3 weeks. Changed to 2 weeks due to a change in medical reports. Initial reports from the ground said the player he hit behind the ball was concussed, failed the concussion test and can't remember the game. The doctors report given by Peel (Freo's reserve team and Sylvia's team) said the player Sylvia hit wasn't concussed.

It seems the WAFL have a crazy system where they only get 1 doctor for each game provided by the home team and that doctor does the medical reports for both sides. It seems Col got lucky to only get 2 not 3.

I have to laugh at everyone who said he would star at Freo, and there were a lot of them

I knew he would be a bust

So glad this clown is gone from the MFC, he sums up why we have been pathetic for the best part of a decade

He gave the club 10 years of service, i reckon he deserves nicer words, but that's just my opinion

Yes and no. He did give the club ten years of service (in fact, I believe that treating players like commodities rather than human beings has been one of the worst facets of our club) but the club did give him a lot of second chances with questionable actions (being with Didak and Christopher Hudson on the night of Hudson's rampage, being in his car when it was smashed in South Yarra whilst it was being driven by an intoxicated driver, domestic violence charges, being photographed with underworld figures in Vegas, being suspended prior to the 2009 practice match in Cairns for being out the night before the match etc.) A lot of people on here would say each and every time when stuff like that would happen that footballers deserved a life outside of football and people shouldn't be so preachy. I look at that list of indiscretions and what Col achieved relative to his draft position and say bollocks.

James McDonald gave us 12 years of his footballing life. No one could ever doubt his commitment (picked up via the rookie list, overcame chronic fatigue and a knee injury to become a 250 game player, two time B&F winner and captain of the club). He never wanted to leave but he was sacked in disgraceful circumstances.

Then we have Col, who while giving lengthy service, was given game after game when he may have struggled to crack the seniors at more professionally run clubs (as he is finding out to his dismay now)

While we should appreciate that Col did give us ten years of his life, we should keep in mind that he did put us through a lot of BS and at times his professionalism was questionable at best.

Edit: He overcame chronic fatigue syndrome which is much worse than glandular fever!

Demonland Trackwatcher Gator ventured down the freeway to bring you his observations from Friday morning's Match Simulation out at Casey Fields. THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
