Paul ROos and Mick Malthouse both over-estimated the quality of their lists.

i suspect its more to do with todays gamestyles, so IMO its now harder for a coach to change clubs; & change the club to how he wants it to play.

yesteryear the game was more spontaneous & natural. It flowed organically... now its almost mechanised with all players "programmed to follow the plan", mechanically.

to take a struggling club, change the list, & the gamestyle, with no top leaders, is IMO way tougher than its ever been before.

The leaders thing is probably a big part of it. Hinkley certainly changed things at Port last year.

Something to ponder, Fremantle do exams on their game plan, if a player fails they aren't selected, they have to know their role, gameplan and so on inside and out just to become available for selection, then there is training and playing well enough to be selected and hold a spot, at Melbourne, a couple decent games at Casey and you're in.

I'm not sure he has ever worked hard enough to crack a game at a decent team to be totally honest, he's a great example of talent only gets you part of the way there.

Whatever any of us intend for the medium term, and obviously that could still eventuate, no one could have intended this for the short term.

Our level of uncompetitiveness in various areas against St Kilda and GWS, coupled with our total lack of competitiveness against West Coast, is nothing short of troubling.

I don't usually agree with the sky-is-falling-down style posts, but I agree that Roos and Jackson should prove that they are actually here to fix the Melbourne Football Club by committing further. To be sitting on two year involvements suggests, obviously, that they might leave soon, and it is patently clear that we are nowhere near any sort of pass mark for this club by that point.

Totally agree. Talk is cheap, actions bring about results. PJ asked the many who were still to sign up to give the MFC another chance. Well the game against West Coast would have put a nail in that coffin.

Our leaders need to stand up and lead from the front. Since we have none on the field, off-field is the only place where we can turn to. Our CEO and coach are going to be the one's who will need to push this sh!theap uphill for the foreseeable future. They continually say it is not going to be an easy and short fix. Well, lets start with locking in our leaders for the short-medium term, so the real heroes of our footy club (the members) are not alone in our fight to keep this club alive, then maybe one day thrive (maybe).

The results are close to what I feared they would be, and when I saw the gameplan in the NAB challenge, I feared the performance would also take a downward turn.

We just don't have the cattle to play this modern possession footy and our confidence is so low and damaged that whatever capacity we did have bleeds out so easily.

I was rapt when we got Roos in, but the cynic in me wonders if he is really giving his all. Nice return to the city of his childhood. Paid millions to have coffees with families and friends.

For the moment, I'm prepared to believe - but I'd really feel better if he at least said that he'd stay for the third year.

The playing group is not good enough. The club has been mismanaged for years, if we let Roos and Jackson waltz in and out then it is more evidence of mismanagement.

We can only hope that this will be the case. That our situation is so dire, if they leave before we really get our house in order, it will look like they are abandoning the ship and their reputations might take a hit.

I agree to a point but I think the saviour belief, if it still exists in the playing group, will be well and truly gone by the end of the year.

Them both committing to 3 years shows they aren't just going to cut and run before the job is done and tells the playing group there will be stability for the next three years. That one year will make a big difference.
