Well we just had an awful rookie draft, we let Templeton, Cavarra, Hourigan, and Battersby go for James Harmes, who does look like a good prospect but i would have been all over them blokes over him.

So you've scouted all of the players we just drafted, and have compared their strengths and weaknesses to the players you mention above, as well as understand how they fit into our exisiting list structure and game plan?

Ridiculous comment. There is absolutely no way of telling whether this was an 'awful' or successful rookie draft.

Just because we didn't select the players on your wishlist doesn't mean that it was an 'awful' draft.

No, I'm telling you that there is no way of judging whether it was an awful or successful rookie draft.

I am not going to pretend to know whether one rookie will be better than the next, I'll leave that to you.

So you're all telling me you wanted him over Templeton?

I'm thinking none of us has spent the last few years working full-time in recruiting and I like what the club has done over this whole trade draft period and there's no reason to think they got it wrong here. Time will tell.

Posted

So you're all telling me you wanted him over Templeton?

I certainly did. I didn't want Templeton coming to the club. From my sources, he interviewed extremely badly. Some clubs didn't have him on their boards for personality/attitude reasons and many disliked him.

There are question marks on Hourigan's ability to get separation at the next level.

Cavarra is not good enough at that size/speed combo at this stage to make an impact at AFL level and if he's not in the midfield what can he do.

Battersby probably thought of as one-paced/vanilla by some clubs - does he enough tricks?

All of these players bar Templeton, who slipped I'm guessing for the above reason, are your stock types who tend to perform well at junior level or at state league level but don't have the athleticism or X-factor clubs are looking for. Remember clubs want players they perceive can play 200 games, not guys that can play 3 or 4 average games.

A key theme in our drafting is speed and athleticism. You've mentioned some moderately paced players who have dominated some junior footy but don't have attributes that will see them have a likelihood of success at the next level, or have 'vices', to use a racing term.

I have to admit I really like the look of Charlie Cameron and was hoping his name would be called for the MFC. I think the Crows have got themselves a serious player there.

I have a copy of the hawk's recruiting dept's list of their player rankings for the 2013 draft. They list in order their top 200 players.

Interestingly, they rated the boy Sicily that they took at about 60 as the 23rd player in the Draft. They rated Tsitas as the 28th player.

Interestingly, they rated Nathan Freeman as the 29th player.

Is that right?

Well the Hawks took 4 rookie draft picks and none of them were Tsitas - who didn't get picked up.

So that has to mean that the 4 players they picked up were rated 24, 25, 26 and 27 on their list.

Wow are they lucky or what!

I find that very hard to believe Max.

How about you post the list?

You are talking about the 41st to 44th players on the list.

They are all so speculative at this stage - you just sound naive when you say we had an awful Rookie Draft.

Everyone usually has 'a bad rookie draft' - the exception would be to have a good one...

Posted

I do.

Tell me what qualities Templeton has that will see him succeed at AFL level.

His hair is similar to Dyson Heppell's... that has to count for something?

As an armchair expert I have no idea about our rookies, but I am not displeased that Jetta got another go, and I like that we picked up a defender and a ruckman/forward..

Because thats what we needed a Ruckman/Tall Forward, we don't have enough of them...

Yeah i guess you're right.

I am not 100% convinced by any of our current ruck stocks, so yeah I am happy to have someone as a project player.

Rookie listed players are speculative, you almost seem to think that these players should be ready made for AFL now...

By the time Max King is ready to play, I suspect Jamar will have retired, leaving us with Spencer and Gawn both who have deficiencies in their game (Kicking as one example) and Fitzy who is still a project in the making.

Interesting that Carlton picked up two Irish lads. I expect that as internationals they will not count in the rookie numbers and are in efect a bonus?

It appears that Templeton has an attitude problem and from all reports Mav Weller does as well; good luck Saints that just what you need.

I was hoping for Hourigan but the fact that he wasn't picked up would indicate that the recruiters mustn't think he's good enough.

I expect most of the FIGJAM Weller had would've drained from him by being delisted and that kids with attitude problems often make good footballers! But that said I don't see any special talents in Weller or Templeton that have me too disappointed.

I think Hourigan just doesn't cut it athletically and therefore no matter how good he is recruiters wont be interested. Play some dominant SANFL or VFL and shed the puppy fat and he might change opinions next year. You can have all the talent in the world but you wont get drafted if the AFL recruiters dont think it will stand up at top level. And the thing is most of the time they are right.

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
