The captaincy. Who do we want?

4 captains

Jack Grimes (Defenders). Col Garland (LG), James Frawley (LG), McDonald, Pedersen, Dunn, Strauss, Terlich, Clisby, Jetta, Nicholson. Coach - Jade Rawlings

Nathan Jones (Inside mids/rucks), Bernie Vince (?LG), Viney, Tyson, Michie, McKenzie, Magner, Jamar, Spencer, Gawn - Coach - Ben Matthews

Jack Trengove (Outside mids), Watts, Toumpas, Evans, Taggert, Blease, Barry, Bail, Matt Jones. Coach - George Stone

Chris Dawes (Forwards), Mitch Clark (LG), Hogan, Byrnes, Fitzy, Kent, Howe, Tapscott. Coach - Daniel McPherson

A very simple system based on chain of command. Each captain has 10 or so guys he is primarily responsible for. Rotate the games to share the media work which really just puff anyway. Share the burden for on field leadership. I fear nothing more than our one consistent player in Jones taking the weight of the captaincy as well as getting tagged each week whilst Grimes and Trengove become disillusioned by having the captaincy removed and it all becomes a bigger mess.

4 captains is controversial. But the AFL is a team game and a great captain can drag a team a little way but only if that player is a great player first. Until we get a Carey, Judd, Jobe Watson or Gary Ablett I see no point for trying to make a lesser player achieve something he can't.

Are you planning to join the Dawks again OD?

No TBF just saying who I would like as captain.

You look at who we have to pick from then look at the Premiers.

A gulf Exists . When we have as good a player as Hodge to consider we will be going somewhere.

There is not one player on our list that comes close.

Whats wrong with picking a good public speaker who can not player due to injury as Captain?

TBH there is only a few players I actual respect in the current list and no stand out Captains come to mind.

A lot. On field leadership is still a vital part of football and all team sports. Our young players who go into their shell when things go bad, who are they meant to follow?

And what about around the club where a guy not even playing becomes spokesman, which is not his job.

And without a proper captain or captains who do the players follow? Do they form their own groups?

That's why my plan is for multiple captains spread through the playing group. Each captain has a direct responsibility to a select proportion of the list. Each one of those players at least plays the right way with the right work rate. And trains the right way. And I'm hoping the 4 of them can perform as we all hope they can at least individually in 2014.

Now I would really be annoyed if the Club pick more then one Captain as it shows they don't trust anyone to lead. IMO it the worst decision by any Club to have two or more Captains. Pick one and support him. If needed have a number of Vice Captains instead,

The main leadership should come from the coaches, especially the million dollar man, Mr Roos.

Interesting approach. What would you think about an overall Captain and then four vice-captains to take on the roles you have suggested?

Your suggestion looks good

From My Human Resources background I evidence your "chain of command" appears based on Roman army centurion structures very relevant and still maintained in armies I believe

There have been many manpower structures used in various industries and countries over time with varying success. The latest to my knowledge are matrix structures which allow and in fact promote autonomy with communicated interaction.

I once presented a paper on "Chaos Theory Human Resources in action" as a response to organisational structural change "flat structures" which were the order of the day (remember Jeff Kennett and Chainsaw Dunlap)

Chaos theory which is a mathematical theory which is used in analysiis of everything from natural environments to Financial markets comes out at abot 3.4 something as the naturally recurring figure

I proposed and saw demonstrated many times that small groups formed naturally and acted independently and effectively. Organisations I worked in encouraged this natural formation with an emphasis on clear consistent communication to ensure organisational direction was achieved.

Never got to develop the practice or analyse fully due to many reasons but I still think it is an appropriate structure, certainly as good as many others proposed. It is certainly a proven theory.

Oh meant to say one leader Roos with functional groups as you are suggesting perhaps the leadership group members select the captain.

One of my most respected leaders had a theory that leaders emerged and we found that consistently in practice.

  • 2 weeks later...

Jones for Capt and either Grimes or Garland for VC... as someone else mentioned, reward for effort and proven leadership on a regular basis. I would think that with the ASADA cloud hanging over his head, Trengove may be out of the picture (even for the leadership group) unless some news comes out well before the start of the new season.

In total agreement there!

C---Jones

VC-Frawley

Make it harder for Chip to leave next year.

Why not just make him captain then?

Captain: Nathan Jones

V/captain: Frawley, Grimes

Leadership Group: Garland, Cross, Dawes, Vince, Trengove

Was going to add Clark but I want to see him on the park for a season. Same probably said about Dawes

Dawes is the best spokesman,Jones the first picked.

Grimes is solid enough but perhaps not consistent enough on field.

So Jack Watts with his solid physical presence and intimidating smile is the only logical choice.

Yes and with that manly beard he has the intimidating presence of the berserker about him.

Agree with Jones and happy to keep Grimes as co captain.

Vice Garland and Chip - although I feel there should be a Foward in the mix, but Dawes and Mitch are always injured.

One thing I hope is that McKenzie and Byrnes are cut from the leadership group.

    MEANWHILE by Whispering Jack

… meanwhile, at about the same time that Narrm was putting its feet on the accelerator to obliterate the long-suffering Euro-Yroke combination, I heard someone mention in passing that Kuwarna was leading Waalitj Marawar by a whopping 46 to 1 halfway through the second quarter of their game over in Adelaide. “What is football coming to?” I asked myself.  In front of my eyes, the Demons were smashing it through the midfield, forcing turnovers and getting the footy to their forwards who w

HEAVEN OR HELL by The Oracle

Clashes between Melbourne and St Kilda are often described as battles between the forces of heaven and hell. However, based on recent performances, it’s hard to get excited about the forthcoming match between these two sides. It would be fair to say that, at the moment, both of these teams are in the doldrums. The Demons have become the competition’s slow starters while the Saints are not only slow to begin, they’re not doing much of a job finishing off their games either. About the only th

    THE BLOW by Whispering Jack

Narrm’s finals prospects took a crushing blow after the team’s insipid performance at Optus Stadium against a confident Waaljit Marawar in the first of its Doug Nicholls Round outings for 2024.  I use the description “crushing blow” advisedly because, although the season is not yet at it’s halfway mark, the Demons have now failed abysmally in two of their games against teams currently occupying bottom eight places on the ladder.  The manner in which these losing games were played out w

HALF FULL by KC from Casey

It was a case of the Casey Demons going into a game with a glass half full in their match up against the Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields on Saturday. As the list of injured and unavailable AFL and VFL listed players continues to grow and with Melbourne taking all three emergencies to Perth for the weekend on a “just in case” basis, its little brother was always destined to struggle. Casey was left with only eight AFL listed players from who to select their team but only two - an out-of-form
