So, where to from here with pick 2?

Ok, let me get this straight.

1. You've been thinking

2. Because we are not a desirable destination we have to offer more to a club than a desirable club.

3. Because we are not a desirable destination we have to offer more money to the player to play for us.

Good thinking. Keep it up!

PS: I'd send this advice to Todd and Roosy, it could be a game changer. :)

Possibly keep youre smug platitudes to yourself. Thanks for ADDING to the convo

My posting was to suggest that whilst some think we need only contemplate the market pricing my thoughts were we need to trump them , at every opportunity. otherwise we will get no where

So Big Head... whats your plan ? got one ?

The other thing is we arent going to solve everything in just one year. Not even 2. it will take a morphing over 3-4 years to go from on the nose, to being a considered destination. So as such look at it in that entirety and adjust the values of our picks accordingly. Bit like front loading a players contract.

Not sure I get the sarcasm here.

It's quite reasonable to suggest that given that less attractive nature of our club at the moment, in order to attract good players we would have to either:

a) offer more money to players to attract them over, or

b) offer more attractive trades to opposition teams to encourage them to push a trade.

The only reasonable exception would be players to are not getting game time elsewhere (although these are likely not the sort of players we are after)

Seems relatively reasonable I would have thought.

Ive been having a bit of a think. There is a distinct stigma about coming to us . For a few it doesnt seem a concern but for the many we still are on the nose.

No [censored] sherlock! Hahahahaha - you've only just come to this realisation now?

Far from it dr.. But what do we do about it ? Twiddle thumbs or go on the front foot and not only realise the elephant's in the room but lets give it a name and use it.

lets turn this trade period a bit on its ear. Everyone else wants to play by some form of co-agreed values, well lets upset that apple cart and play by ours. lets get something.

Like a government whos money isnt worth shlt it revalues the currency to suit. We need to do exactly that. next year might be different and so on but right now we arent being taken seriously.

Just do yourself a favour and stop typing.

why..

care to offer your views ?

How do we garner more success from these trade periods than we seem to ?

Or are you just a witless champ ?

whilst we play everyone elses game we get pummeled. we need to go about it differently.

care to add ? if not.. maybe you are the one who should stop typing !!

Bub, sorry for offending, I just needed a bit of levity.

Do you think we should target midfielders, I reckon that's what we should do. :)

I haven't read the whole thread because I'm lazy today, but I think it's pretty simple. We are under no obligation to trade this pick. If another club wants to get their hands on it, it is up to them to make us an offer that we consider worth it. The media are trying to play up the angle that Melbourne are approaching all other clubs with cup in hand and are being turned away. The simple reality is that we have said to the rest of the competition that if they would like the pick we are willing to listen to what they have to offer, but it will have to be something pretty special to get us interested.

If nobody can come up with something we want, then we'll be perfectly happy to use the pick to grab a very good quality mid in the draft.

Does anyone know if Tom Mitchell of Sydney is out of contract (OOC)? He's been in the system for two years now I am just not sure if he originally signed a 2 or 3 year deal under the father son rule. Or has he at any point extended his contract or re-signed with the Swans? If he is OOC he could be an excellent and ideal target for a direct swap with pick 2 (although highly unlikely).

Related Thread: http://demonland.com/forums/index.php?/topic/33604-a-target-in-tom-mitchell/?hl=+tom%20+mitchell

On the contrary if the trade for Shiel goes ahead, I hope the club can sort it out along the lines of Shiel and pick 9 for our pick 2 and second round pick (18-20ish). GWS have an abundance of quality midfielders and would be desperate to acquire the likes of Scharenberg for their half back line (where their list lacks the most), I don't think they will pass on Boyd and he won't be around at pick 9.

I could see that GWS might be interested in our pick 2. They could off load it to a club for two good, mature, experienced players who are desperately needed to add support and guidance

to their young list. No great loss to the other club as they would have quite a few players of that quality and in return they could get the second pick in the draft. Hawthorn, Geelong and Sydney are three clubs that I could see as being interested.

So the trading of pick 2 could be a protracted affair involving three clubs.

If this doesn't happen we get to choose which of the highly regarded mids we want out of the draft, which is still a great position to be in.

Just don't get the doom and gloom. The problem with getting a Pick 2 worthy player to the MFC has little or nothing to do with the MFC and everything to do with clubs not wanting to release those kinds of players.

Unless I've missed something and Rockfield, Shuey, Swallow etc. have all found new homes that aren't the Dees?

Clubs and especially supporters are loathe to trade anyone with that sort of currency, and it's understandable once you form an emotional attachment.

Look at what happens on this forum when someone suggests trading a player like Howe, Watts or Frawley.

A big part of it is also the "bird in the hand" philosophy.

Which is fair.

As I said elsewhere The Ox believes we will get Shiel but personally don't want to involve pick 2 in it. Quite a few excellent mids are available, Aish, Kelly, Freeman, etc. if you look at Ollie Wines (don't cry now!) from last year, these guys have potential to make a huge instant impact!

Just listening to Crows list manager David Noble on 5aa.

Was very interesting listening...

On the topic of Bernie Vince...

5aa : "So are we in the market for Pick 2 for Vince and possibly Jarryd Lyons?"

Noble : "You guys are WAY OFF the mark! Everyone in the media is way off the mark. The value of Pick 2 is huge. The Melbourne Football Club have made enquiries with a number of clubs and have made it very clear what Pick 2 is worth to them. A player 22-25 yrs of age who is a club best and fairest winner. If they give up Pick 2 over the next week or so it will be front page news."

Play hard Dees!

I love it!

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

    WELCOME 2024 by Meggs

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. The Matildas have been playing to record sell-out crowds across Australia and ‘Mary Fowler is God’ is chalked onto footpaths everywhere. WNBA basketball rookie sensation Caitlin Clark has almost single-handedly elevated her Indiana Fever team to unprecedented viewership, attendances and playoffs in the USA.   Our female Aussie Paris 2024 Olympians won 13 out of Australia’s all-time record 18 gol

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
