Don't know that Jack Viney would agree.

But the list of players that was cited above who "should have been played" in the VFL to strengthen Casey in the finals, only includes two "kids", Kent (doing OK in the firsts) and Toumpas (another easy 30 possessions last week).

Toumpas got 23 possessions today and was amongst our best!

Clubs make their own luck.

MFC decision making is appalling:

  • on the field
  • team selection
  • dealing/working with Casey

Each one crap....still crap...can't see it changing frankly.

Was at the game and Jetta was great. Gawn was very good to, Gillies gave Casey a chance, and was promising up forward.

Also saw Hogan and large limp on him. Can walk without crutches but saw him walking with them later on just for support. He was very keen to be out there.

I bet you RL that Jamar gets a game before Gawn next week, after all thats the Melbourne way.

Maybe he needs to be pumped up for trading.

Can Jetta save his AFL career with one last chance for the Demons next week?

aaah probably not....

Yeah i didnt think of that.

All afl players can play for vfl next week, correct?

And subsequently, afl players can keep playing at vfl, regardless of qualification until their afl side is knocked out, correct?

At least we will have a full available squad next week for casey. Does anyone know of paying in the first final counts as one of the 6 required games?

For those that went and saw the game today. What is your opion of the MFC and Casey players? Do they share as team mates should? Have seen most games this year and thought today was the worst I have seen for Casey players looking for Casey players. Some of them must be trying to impress recruiters from AFL clubs as a few got very goal hungry.

How did Sellar get in the best? He turn over of the ball was shocking especially in the last quarter when the pressure was on.

I haven't seen much but I would point out the obvious in that today there were more Casey players than probably the rest of the season. Very unfortunate for Casey though that Hogan, Byrnes, Strauss, Fitzpatrick and Blease all got injured last week. To lose by 2 points when just any one of those 5 (or the 3 who got promoted to AFL in their place in Rodan, Toumpas, Frawley and Pedersen) would've been enough to get the job done. Nothing beats bad luck.

Magner not in the best, perhaps he's given up, although he will probably get a game now.

SO CLOSE by KC from Casey

The Casey Scorpions have finished the 2013 VFL home and away season in fourth spot after losing out by two points in a nail biting thriller to Box Hill at City Oval. Victory in the match would have clinched second spot on the ladder and a home qualifying final but instead, the loss means the Scorpions will meet runaway ladder leaders Geelong at Simonds Stadium on Friday night under lights.

The Scorpions suffered a major blow when their AFL affiliate Melbourne lost four players from last week's team through injury to add to the loss of leading goalkicker Jesse Hogan (knee) and key defender Joel Macdonald (retirement) leaving them with their lowest number of AFL listed players for the season. Despite that, Casey's effort in taking the game to the wire and going down by less than a kick after some near misses in front of goal late in the match was outstanding.

Casey opened the game full of confidence and made the early running but were pegged back by the Hawks who grabbed the lead late in the opening term. The Scorpions were then dominated for a quarter and a half to face a 26-point deficit at one stage in the third term. Led from the front by inspirational skipper Evan Panozza, the Scorpions rallied and cut the deficit to seven points at three quarter time and momentarily took the lead soon after.

Box Hill's two goals in response ultimately proved too much for the visitors who peppered the goals for most of the remainder of the game for only one major from Tom Gillies. With less than two minutes to go Dom Barry had the chance for glory but his shot on an angle from ten metres out missed. The Scorps continued to threaten but were thwarted by a desperate defence and the siren ended their home final aspirations.

Max Gawn was solid in the ruck after an early injury scare and Neville Jetta was again among the team's best players. James Magner was held to 23 touches while Will Petropoulos and Jake Best persisted all day and nearly got their side over the line.

Simonds Stadium should hold no fears for Casey as they won there earlier in the year but on that occasion Hogan and Jack Fitzpatrick each booted five goals. Against Box Hill yesterday, they simply lacked that firepower. They also had Tom Couch and David Rodan racking up possessions in the middle and neither is likely to be available next week. Panozza will sweat out the next few days after being reported on a rough conduct charge. Still, the Scorpions are known for their great fighting spirit when they have their backs to the wall and a finals win is surely not far away.

Maybe fitzpatrick can "come back" through casey next week?

Can anyone confirm our deny if playing next week would count as one of the 6 games required?

Nothing goes right for Melbourne or any team with their players.

Do you really care? The senior players will be gone on Sunday night whilst a small group must focus and train for the VFL finals.

After the year the club has had it would do them all good to get away from the place and forget footy. I hear the "playing in the finals is a good thing" but given our year I reckon "go on holiday and have some fun for the first time since March" sounds better.

For all the comments here Casey have done little to endear themselves and I'll not lose one dot of sleep if we are out in straight sets.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
