Just to be clear, the UCI (cycling's governing body) don't and haven't banned any cycling teams. On a few occasions where there have been multiple doping cases in the same team, either race organisers refuse to allow the offending team to participate (by simply not inviting them), or the teams actually "ban" themselves under an agreement the've put in place. This is what happened at the recent Tour of Beijing, where Astana withdrew after two of their riders returned positives in lead-up races.

I know cycling gets a bad rap, most of well-earned and self-inflicted, but what has happened at Essendon in terms of refusing to play by the rules, going to court etc. etc., has NEVER occurred in cycling.

Totally agree. And those coaches who are found to have encourage performance enhancement are usually banned for life and some end up in jail.

We are a long way from that regime, but should we be, that is the question?

I think , possibility the great undoing o Essendon in all of this might be a simple failure to adhere to detail.

If the waiver the lads signed had referred to Thymomodulin and not Thymosin they might have been able themselves to asume plausible deniability ( even if they knew otherwise ).

There is NO good ( allowed ) version of Thymosin. It can ONLY really refer to TB4. By thinking to" accidentally" forget to type Beta 4

they thought they could pull one over the eyes of any with an interest to know . In reality it lit up in lights the real culprit.

The afl penalties two seasons ago were for bad governance. It has no bearing on any penalties for drug use. IMO this is heading to the COAIS (sports court) under the sponsorship of WADA as I don't think any Australian authority will have the courage to hand out the penalty that Hird and Essendon deserve. There are just too many vested interests, particularly economic interests. Either way, Essendon will go for a row.

Yes very interesting isnt it. I sense Aussie sport is about to grow up big time..If WADA needs a show case to 'educate' all this is it. WADA wont give a rats about the status of Essendon, or the League itself it will only see wrongdoing and an opportunity to use its' big stick.

Benny Boy will be under no misgivings as to what he needs to do upon his return and if he doesnt do it, WADA will and Benny will be out of a job.

The curiosities.. How far will WADA go with penalising the players ? I cant cant see much change out of 2years reduced to 1 personally.The players have not helped themselves in all of this. The AFLPA hasnt helped anyone and only seem to be unwittingly aiding Essendon. The Club has displayed callous disregard for just about everything.

Hard to predict the outcome as no real precedent. In the great scheme of things this is an opportunity on a plate for WADA. its potential as a deterrent on a global scale is possibly far too tempting to ignore. Why would it care about any collateral damage in little ol' Oz if it could send a HUGE message back around the world that its serious about all of this.

I hope it does. Why should any sporting entity think it might escape the wrath in its entirety only because its deemed integral to some competition ? Maybe this is the great wake up needed. Maybe Essendon do need to be vanquished, offered up as the sacrifice to show that you cant hide behind anything.

What if Essendon is belted out of existence ? Well a gap can be filled by another team ( of sorts ) but in and of itself that ought not be any consideration in determining the fate of such heinous actions by a club towards its players.

WADA also need to remind the world there is NO...absolutely NO excuse for not being responsible for yourself in sport.

WADA may well go the distance(COAIS) if ASADA cant bring itself to do whats needed.

This is a post for the sake of posting (slow day). I watched Bombers speech at the B&F and was it just me or was he actually saying goodbye to the faithfull! The press ran the line about white anting Hird blah blah but listening/reading between the lines I think he was trying to back out gracefully! Did he think he had the Sun's job? or has his sphincter had to cope with one too many pineapples already?. With another biggy heading his way (rough end first) he has probably made the right choice. Better to go on his own terms than be purged by the coming mega sized dose of ASADA laxative!

Its all bull tish. They are all claiming they tried to stop the program. If so many at the club were trying to stop the program (which they claim wasn't illegal !) Then why didn't the program stop?

Because they were seeking to push the boundaries and according to Hird's emails, the naysayers were roadblocks to go around.

Make no mistake, this was highly organised, dodgy and designed to avoid detection. The club should be thrown out of the comp.
