This week the Scorpions have a must win battle ahead of them against the much improved Dolphins at the picturesque Frankston Oval by the bay.

There's no Jesse Hogan (planned rest week) but James Magner retains his place in the side although it was thought he might be promoted to play for Melbourne after being uplifted from the rookie list.

This looms as a danger game for the Casey Scorpions especially with the absence of leading goalkicker Jesse Hogan (rested). With a game next week against the winless Bendigo Gold, Casey would wrap up a top four spot with victory in this match but Frankston will not be easy to beat. The Dolphins are still an outside chance of making the finals and have given some quality sides a run for their money this year. They have wins over Port Melbourne and Collingwood under their belt. They also lost a game to North Ballarat a few weeks ago after losing their score when a count found they had 19 men on the ground.

There are a few Demons who must be very close to breaking back into the team. Strong displays from Magner, Strauss and Tynan this week might force the selectors' hands given our current poor standing in the AFL.

I like that Hogan as being rested for finals, just for the clear indication that it means they intend on playing him. Obviously in the past we've seen key players get pulled.

Which other players are eligible for the finals? It would be good to see Fitzpatrick, Clisby et al get the opportunity to play finals since they were strong contributors to Casey's early season form.

I agree; it sort of sounds lie a shift maybe taking place Re playing our kids in the VFL Finals... I also hope 'the Toump' going back is possibly part of this plan, if correct?

Can anyone confirm this is correct? If it is it appears that any player who has played 6 VFL games will qualify for the VFL fianls regardless of how many AFL games they've played.

If the "no more than 12 games" requirement does apply, it is interesting to note that Jimmy Toumpas and Max Gawn have both played 12 games before being dropped this week (both would have 6 VFL games for the season if they play the year out at Casey, making them eligible for finals), Jack Viney has played 9 games for the MFC (not sure how many VFL games he has or if he could get to 6 to qualify), and Jack Fitzpatrick has 9 MFC games (so could drop back in coming weeks to qualify?). I wouldn't be unhappy if these four played the finals series for Casey, would anyone else?

Yes, your interpretation of this seems to be correct. Any player that plays AFL after July 1 must have played six VFL games and no more than 12 AFL games to qualify.

Players who haven't played after July 1 seem to be eligible, provided they have played at least one VFL game and less than 12 AFL games.

All players are eligible to play the first VFL final - provided they are not required in AFL that weekend.

Jimmy T has played three VFL games to date - Rds 4, 5 and 8 - primarily because that numbskull Neeld rushed him into the seniors in Rd 1 and then dropped him for the GWS game. He will have to play the next three round in VFL to qualify and I doubt Craigy will keep him out that long.

Jack Viney cannot qualify for VFL and is too good for it anyway.

But Dean Kent, Fitzy, Jake Spencer, Mitch Clisby, Cam Pedersen, Daniel Nicholson and Jordie McKenzie can all still qualify for VFL finals.

The other problem is that in the past we've sent any player with a semblance of an injury off for surgery or an early holiday so they can be back doing pre-season training by early October.

The club hasn't given a stuff about Casey - it would be nice if that changed and we encouraged a winning culture - even if it is only at VFL level.

I agree. But be prepared for an outpouring of anger if a Melbourne-listed player gets a serious injury while playing finals for Casey.

To pre-empt that I'll just say that injuries happen in pre-season training, too.

Lets not even go there.

We have been developing him as a back (and sometimes forward) it would be stupid to play him somewhere else - we look stupid enough already.

I am sick of all the potential midfielders that we are playing forward and back etc. - We need mids so lets develop mids (Kent, Taggert, Tynan etc. should be getting full games in the midfield at Casey). If we are to ever improve we need to start finding some diamonds in the rough or should I say stop looking and start making (Sydney).

The VFL RECORD usually publishes a list of players eligible about 2 - 3 weeks before the finals noting those who would become eligible if they were to play out the rest of the season with the VFL aligned club.
