Davey has reminded me that he is still one of the best kicks in the league, but the best kick so far this year has come from Trengove.

In the first quarter, on the half-forward flank he hit Watts lace-out in a crowded forward line. What made this kick so good was he didn't kick the ball to Watts, he kicked the ball to space and made him lead to the ball.

Melbourne players have a horrible habit of kicking to where the player is, not where he will be. This however was a tiny ray of light which suggests the players aren't completely clueless about the basics of football.

My favourite was Kent's bomb from about 65 metres out that was going too fast for Howe to grab in the goal square.

This kid can seriously kick a football and will be a true asset to the team once he finds a groove.

Agreed. It stood out like dog's balls because it was a superb kick entering our forward 50. Perfectly executed.

Best kick of the year (lol at this concept but certainly relevant for where we are) was Davey against Richmond I believe. Running down the wing, kicking it back inside and threading it between 2 or 3 Richmond players to hit one of our boys on the chest. It was poetry.

You forgot one detail. As to the bit about kicking to where the player is, we think the player is 20 metres up in the air.

Trengove is actually quite a good user of the ball, something I've only noticed lately. When we have a couple of better midfielders around him, Trenners will look a lot better too. These 16-20 disposal games will turn into 23-30 disposal games with consistency. His tackling is already fantastic and strength in and under has improved a lot under Neeld.

Have to say Toumpas showed us yesterday he is an elite kick, one pass was only about 20m I thInk in the 3rd quarter went like a rocket first low hard accurate kick I have seen for some time

Yep agree. Toumpass showed that if he can get enough of the ball he can be damaging. His disposal is superb.

It had the side benefit of forcing Watts to hit the ball at full tilt as well. It really was a beautiful passage of play. For those few minutes, I actually felt alive watching the footy*.

I felt that way for Davey's goal in the first quarter. Awesome pace and poise to weave through traffice, avoid two scum players and slot it from an angle.

That was how to kick a drop kick with distance in the 50's and 60's when we won all those flags remember.

Also remember that Dave McNamara used to lean back when kicking as well. Google him.

this is driven by pressure on the mids, but the idea that if it is a contest then the person who is in front will be able to push the ball to the fall of the ground. we just dont get people there, chris dawes does it alot, he bring it to the foot of the contest which adds to the predictability of a the team.

another factor is that mitch clark will mark those balls alot of the time, he has an uncanny wingspan and if it is high and in front it is nearly impossible to get spoiled

but i agree there is nothing better than a lace out kick that i wish we did more often

It wasn't the prettiest that's for certain.

My point was the power he has in his kicking and for the team to have a player capable of taking a handball off the HFL and kicking scores will be a great asset. Tapscott and Sylvia looked like they could do it on the odd occasion but I think Kent will become renowned for it.
