Occasional runs through the middle and very occasional, not capable of long spells as there is no tank

Morton had a great tank.

So does Nicho.

Five minutes of value is better than an hour of spazzoness.

Are you serious Morton had no motivation to gut run and neither does Garlett, this is what makes gun midfielders. Garlett is a freak of a talent as a forward but lets not try and make him out to be something he is not

Disagree on Morton. He wasn't much but their was a reason he racked up plenty of touches in his first couple of seasons. It was usually a hand ball receive or chip kick out wide but he did work pretty hard to get the ball. In fact in 08 I often though how come Morton seems to know to spread out wide to get loose possessions but none of the rest of our players understand that!

But back to Garlett I think most of the gun small forwards these days have one or more of 3 additional attributes:

- Top class defensive work (ie. Rioli)

- Strong marking (Lindsay Thomas, Michael Walters, Chad Wingard, Le Cras)

- Elite blistering Speed (Jeff Garlett)

If you don't display any of them then you have all the class in the world like a Chris Yarran and really not be all that dangerous unless you can rotate into the midfield.

Considering Garlett is miles away from AFL midfield ability fitness wise my thoughts are you are looking at a classy but pretty average small forward in the making with doubts you'll ever get to midfield exposure. And therefore other small forwards might offer the same impact without half the drama. And for Melbourne I think we should consider the other smalls or the best available midfielder much higher than worrying about this guy for pick 40

Out of all of those you have listed, He is closest to Michael Walters but he has better skills. Very good mark is Garlett not by power or great leap but just fantastic timing.

I am actually fascinated to see who takes the punt on him and will follow his career closely.

Master, developing and understanding work ethic at AFL level is not something players are exposed to until they're at a club. Rioli I know for a fact was never as amazing defensively as he is now. He was a freak who who could do anything with the ball in hands but wasn't so interested in running players down and being a pressure specialist.

As PSD has said, Garlett has all the skills in the world. It's about developing the other areas of his game once at an AFL club. As it is with all players.

Article in last weeks Sunday Times that the Hawks have met him on a few occasions (reportedly arranged a meeting on what would've been Swans mad Monday to see how he presented himself) and are keen on him at pick 24.

Reported by Kim Hagdorn so it's probably just made up crap but he would be a damaging player in the Hawks line up.

Same thing's reported on the AFL website today.

Sheez, things are tough when Vic journos are feeding off the crumbs left by WA based hacks like Hagdorn a week later.

The bit in the article about the 4am bender the weekend leading up to the draft is true and certainly very much watered down. Bender is putting it mildly but 12 months on and the new GF seem to have sorted him out bigtime

I still can't get over the utter stupidity of posting photos of himself with eyes bulging out of his head, and the hashtag "#cooked" leading up to the draft.

If the kid makes it, it'll be an absolute miracle.

I cant stand 'Haggers'.1st class muppet. Got a good chuckle from listening to him try to pronounce Kolodjashnij on the weekend though.

Could tell a far worse story about Harley Bennell, but wouldn't do the kid much justice.

I could tell some stories about a couple of poster boys of the AFL, but I'm not going to here.

Suffice to say, most of the players are regular guys, not all that well educated, highly paid, young, with loads of spare time, and they are knights of their little fiefdoms. It's hardly surprising what spins off that.

What actually surprises me is that many in the community don't even know what goes on - and, when they hear snippets of such happenings, they can't believe it. Head in the sand stuff.

I'm surprised there's not more discussion about depression for many of these players when they retire and the glory period comes to a fairly abrupt end.

Here is hoping we get him at 40, that would mean we come out of this draft/trade period with 3 top 10 talented players, tyson, garlett and pick 9.

he fits the bill in kind of player we need, and all being well will be a 10 year player, and if not pick 40 in this draft is rather speculative anyway.

Landsberger and Jay Clark at the HeraldSun now saying they think no one will take Garlett.

Didn't see that one coming...

Yes.. neither did I... (Sarcasm) They know about us much as the rest of us if we're being honest Machsy.

He will be picked up, I'm sure of it.

I would love to be able to pick him up in the PSD or rookie draft! that would be ideal

I was being sarcastic, but to be honest, I really didn't think they'd come out the day before the draft and say that, after weeks of predicting he'd be given a chance.

Maybe just hedging their bets.

We'll know by about 8 30 tonight.

Will post about it then. Hopefully celebrating us taking him..

Hopefully.

If he's still in the mix at 40 I'll be amazed and if we pass on him I'll be very disappointed.

Fark it....lets take a punt. Taken too many duds over the years. Lets have a crack. If he plays up move him on

Wouldn't the playing up and moving on make him a 'dud' - it would certainly make him a 'dud pick.'

I would say we need talent and we need to get the most out of our picks that we can - such is the state of our list.

That's not an argument for or against picking Garlett up, it's an argument against being blase about it.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
