A clear metric on Coach performance would be how far up (or down) the ladder he's taken his team since arriving...
coach_performance.png
Which has Neeld as 5th worst performed coach after Watters, Buckley, McCartney, Voss (equal result by 4.5 years to achieve it).

Not saying -4 is an acceptable result, simply that it's not exceptional, not the worst, and our "Skys are Falling" hysteria is the only thing that makes it any different than the decline Buckley's enduring at the Pie's, Watters at the Saints, etc...

And do we need to point out yet again that Clarkson, Bomber Thompson and Hardwick all had media and fans screaming for their heads at various points with the same "the sky is falling" mentality that is prevalent on these boards right now? Their club boards had the fortitude to back in the process they had embarked upon and reaped the rewards. I really hope ours have the same faith and stoicism.

You can use whatever stats you like to dress up his performance, the facts are we've been garbage since Neeld took over. Show me one area of our performance where we've improved since he took the reigns?

The last 2 coaches i saw that were virtually dead men walking at one point in their coaching careers that turned it around was Bomber Thompson and Alistair Clarkson

It can be done but IMO Neeld wont be number 3

We were garbage before Neeld took over. The point is he's done no worse than many... when you bother to look at the broader picture.

Watters has overseen TWICE the decline at Saint Kilda than Neeld at Melb, but not a squeak?

Most useless stats ive seen used to justify a point. How many games of football has Watters won compared to neeld and whats the % differance ?.

The decline of the performance (relative to their previous year) of the Saints since Watters took over has been far greater than what Neeld has overseen at Melbourne.

Watters Inherited seasoned finalist team with several champions, they now sit two positions above us with two wins. Neeld inherited a perennial cellar dweller with zero champions. And you think Watters has performed better than Neeld?

We finished with 8 wins and a draw the year before he took over. Last year we managed four wins. This year we'll be lucky to manage another win. If you're content with our performance under his leadership then I'm afraid you have low standards.

Its impossible to decline in ladder position when you are dead last PRB (except expansion teams) and even if that happened he would be -6. Going by your argument he would still be performing better than watters if we were below GC & GWS.

Not content with the current situation.

My point is, the Pies and Saints are prepared to stick with their new coaches (not panic) despite falls in ladder position and preformance greater than what we are experiencing at Melbourne. So perhaps we should follow their lead, grow up and trust our coach to achieve the results if we give him his term to prove himself.

Voss has achieved the same result as Neeld over 4.5 years such are the Lions understanding that great teams take time...

And to be honest, I don't care how the coaches of other clubs are performing. I just want the one in charge of the MFC to get us firing. The one at the moment clearly isn't doing that.

I suppose resigning Denis Jones is out of the question then

Hinkley must be spewing this analysis wasn't done a few weeks ago when they were on top of the ladder. Ditto for Sanderson at the end of last season.

Seriously Paul, this is nonsense.

I agree the figures can fluctuate massively within a season and between seasons.

But that variation just adds weight to not making hasty decisions about coaches in response to these fluctuations.

The essence of this thread is exactly what's wrong with our current state. Are we meant to feel better about the situation, because statistically others are worse? How about questioning why we're not up there with the best? We're being conditioned to accept mediocrity. Time to set a new standard.

I suppose the ladder was too-difficult-a-means to figure out his position?

All this goes to show is statistics can show you anything someone to see.I only need to look at the MFC Senior Coachs wins/loss record and the way MFC has been losing. Personally I seen enough!

Are you really suggesting the the MFC Senior Coach should be given longer to prove himself?

I for one don't the MFC has the time or the energy for that!

If he does stay I can hear him saying "give us time as the MFC is undergoing another rebuild and the players MFC has have all player under 50 games ....". When I hear this, all I want to do is cry due to wasted opportunity.

The MFC needs to see movement towards success. Unfortunitely there only been movement to continued failure.

The pressure will be on Buckley this year, particularly if they don't make final 4. The Malthouse decision will not be far from the mind of the supporters and media.

Watters is getting some heat as is Voss.

Hadwick will cop a lot more this year, I think his match day coaching is poor but he does have good personal relationships with the media so the blow torch is not turned up. Won't be too long though.

Neeld, well..no, this chart shows nothing. We were supposed to be a team on the rise and we are going nowhere.

Dennis would enter the comp with a -1 Index. No too bad at all.

He equalled the 5 wins of the 1977 side but dropped 16% percentage in securing The Wooden Spoon.

No cheap Expansionist wins available either.

Miles ahead of Neeld.

What a ridiculous measure. Clearly doesn't take into account taking over ageing lists and starting a rebuild, and also, spots on the ladder fail to represent just how rubbish we currently are.

So a coach could take over the spooners and might be the worst coach in history, but could still do no worse than mid table on this ladder.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
