Anyone heard about these?

Another crock, or a legitimate thing? What do we reckon?

Personally, as I'm into the whole stats thing, I'm looking forward to seeing the rankings. That being said, I doubt statistical analysis will ever be able to truly reflect the ability of players and their contributions to their respective teams... Probably will just cause more debate and conspiracy theories etc.

Could be a good marketing tool for the top sides I guess; for us on the other hand....

I'm interested to see what they have to say and obviously which of our players they rate. The obvious question for me is about the now traditional loading in favour of mids. Do they have a system that factors this in and can give an reasonable statistics-based analysis of players in vastly different roles? Will they show any defenders in their top bracket?

You would hope so, otherwise it's just another version of Champion Data (Supercoach) and AFL Fantasy rankings

just another thing afl.com has copied from ESPN

Funny, when it looked like Vlad may move on I was thinking how nice it would be to grab an executive from the NFL to run our comp.

You can be sure no Melbourne player will be worthy of a rating other than maybe Jones

The media always ignore us with things like this.

This ranking system has nothing to do with the media; it's all numbers.

We are crap at that as well. None of our players rack up decent numbers. We can't get our hands on the ball. ANd when we do we turn it over 50% of the time.

i noteced that Watts is rated #13 of all defenders... interesting, seeing he is much maligned

Posted

was just about to make a thread about this.

Proves what i have been saying.

This shows how good Colin Sylvia is, being named 60 and Jones 58.

Watts 106.

These rankings show how effective they are with ball in hand and how much they impact our score board. I know Watts this year hasnt been someone to bring the house down about but hes a star.

Sylvia will go up to top 40 by the end of the year as i can just see him lifting.

You cant argue with the player ratings.. im sorry, they are correct.

The fact that Watts is the 13th best defender when really he's closer to 13th best defender at Melbourne shows how screwed these are!

They clearly haven't been able to accurately record how many touches and what impact your opponent has or things like contests you stand and watch. It's the physical things that Watts doesn't do that can't be measured

Whats great about the rankings is that people like you have no comeback. The media and melbourne supporters have constantly been on Jack's back when really he is easily the most effective player with ball in hand on our team. Now Jack sometimes appears to not have put a full effort in. But he is a very good player and i think you need to not go in with such a negative attitude to when Watts plays

5. Cyril Rioli

16. Daniel Wells

37. Shannon Hurn

Thank for posting this. I needed a chuckle.

personallly these are abit iffy.

But Cyril and Daniel Wells's imapcts on games are quite significant. There has been more than a few times where Buddy is off his game and Cryil single handedly wins the Hawks the game.

If you dont think Wells deserves his position than you needd to watch some of North's games. He is an absolute star and one of the most effective players on the team. Id rather Wells than Swallow.

not really.

They've already shown themselves to be a farce. Look at the defender ratings and figure out where the best full backs and CHBs are. These are some of the best and most sought-after players in the competition, yet the ranking system does not have a mechanic to allow their abilities to be reflected in their position.

Of course facts and figures that the afl and 18 clubs pay a fortune for are rubbish when compared to demonlanders' feelings and opinions.

The problem is that they really are rubbish. As I've said before, there is no useful method in place to determine the value of defensive acts. As long as they continue to base their scoring system on possessions it is inherently flawed as it only measures half of the game. A spoil needs to be valued as highly as a mark. Effective blocks are worth every bit as much as a possession. What about the Jimmy Bartel tap-on last week that made a goal out of nothing? No stat recorded in any column, but he created a goal. Until they start adding things like these to their system it has very little relevance to the actual game.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

WAYNE WUSSELL'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Rehab: Lever, Spargo, McAdam, Lindsay, Brown Sinnema is excellent by foot and has a decent vertical leap. Windsor is training with the Defenders. Windsor's run won't be lost playing off half back. In 19 games in 2024 he kicked 8 goals as a winger. I see him getting shots at g

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
