Is it time to Re-Brand?

As we all sit and contemplate our football clubs situation do we need to ask ourselves this...

It's a grand old flag! But do we need a brand overhaul? I was born in the 50's and am very proud of our history but I am also realistic that the game now belongs to the NOW generation and the future.

I think our brand is stuck in the past and we need something modern. I am not a brand expert and only offer this thought to those who can really bring change to this once famous club. We don't need to throw out our past with the bath water but we must move forward with the times.

Personally as a paid member I will support a new CEO and New President making our re-branding a priority. We have to do this as a matter of urgency because our brand is now in terminal decline.

Sure, let's rename ourselves the Vikings and drink mead, worship the Norse gods and rape and pillage after each game, Erik the Viking can become all out favourite movie and official mascot!

How about a new logo that tries to cram seven different concepts into one making it look ridiculous. Then we could get all our players to wear a blazer from a private school. And then we could just get ex players to run the club and shebang, we'd be back in business. Oh wait we tried all that didn't we.

I'm no expert but I am currently nearly finished my study in design and branding, and from my point of view our brand identity is a bit of a jumbled mess. However, being footy 99% of our image is HOW we play, the other stuff is needed and important, but winning games and having stars is what will get us new generation supporters IMO.

It is not the brand, its the environment surrounding the players that impacts them & distracts them from football matters. We're toffs... we lose the hard edge.

our supporter base encourages the players to be too gentlemanly.

& those who don't fit in this culture, either leave, or turn to drink or drugs to get by.

# we would be more successful at breeding Cricketers than footballers!

Or a soccer club, we would breed Excellent soccer players.

Nope. While I think we screwed up the last rebrand we need to spend all available resources on getting better on field. That helps build a real brand that people believe in.

Nike aren't Nike because they have a concise logo and brand position. They got to be who they are because they made good, innovative products that created their own demand. We need to remember what we are selling first, then make something people want to buy and believe in again. Only then will a rebrand actually have any resonance.

The priority is on winning games of footy first and foremost, but yeah the logo is way too busy.

Good culture equals good brand. Our culture from the supporter to the player is on the nose. Supporters have accepted mediocrity for decades and players and administrations promised the world and so far delivered nothing.

Neeld is the latest in a conga line of coaches who have found it difficult to change our stinking culture.

Our brand will stink until we play year after year in the finals. Change the culture and the brand will take care of itself.

Totally disagree, the current logo is great...far better than what else has been put up in the last 20 years.

I liked the 80's cartoon demon but it does not present a appropriate corporate images of the club which it now needs to survive.

Marketing is one piece in the puzzle. Our current marketing is bloody woeful and anyone who has read my posts knows my opinion on it.

Let's become a club that is about football rather than the one that Mick Malthouse described.

I think the removal of the southern cross, three prong trident is a start.

have 1858 directly under the MFC and remove the rest, it's too busy for an emblem. I personally will be happy with just the MFC & 1858

.. I neglected to mention, its a lot better to have a list of aggressive players, where the tough firebrand coach, has to teach the players discipline, to reign in their over exuberance & aggression, than to have to try to 'invent it', into passive players.

.. we seem to be on the way towards the harder brand, recruiting types like Hogan & Viney & no doubt others.

Yep. Packers fans are called (and call themselves) Cheeseheads. They can do it because of the way the team handles itself on the field. We couldn't do that. Geelong could. Winners are grinners, and all that.

We can brand and re-brand all we like, but until we win games we'll be on the nose.

You may be on to something here DC.

I have just done some research into this noble flower and ,although it is not from the pansy family ,a Fuchsia coloured kerchief worn in the back hip pocket signals to others that the wearer is a big fan of being spanked.

Another point worthy of note is that the flower itself is named after German botanist Leonhart Fuchs .

We could shorten the flower back to its briefer ,snappier nomencalture and name ourselves simply ,

"The Melbourne Fuchs"
