I can't wait for the big Kent and Toumpas to be fixtures in the side. It's youth and class that will help propel us forward. I'd love Kent to be a left footed Dayne Beams. Beams started as that young half-forward with a strong core and a good kick and I see similarities with Kent. The young Queenslander was pick 29 and played 18 games in his first year. I hope Kent can get a dozen, or so.

Can you describe how capable he is kicking over shorter distances ie. pinpoint passes with 'zing' would be a mouthwatering description. A la Hodge, Jarman (wishful thinking on my part; but I set the bar high).

Still much concerned about the quality of our midfield. That's where most of the improvement has to come from, but we've had the worst midfield in the comp for a number of years now so the only way is up.

Having better forward targets & set-up will help, but still have to do far better getting it to them.

So where's the improvement going to come from? Can we hope for improvement from the "same-old" mids? Or will we need to load up with newbies?

So far most of the suggested teams have had the same midfield, minus Moloney & Magner (who seems out of favour), plus Viney & Toumpas. Can't we do any better than this?

I saw him passing 25 metres to Toumpas back and forth and his trajectory, accuracy, speed, etc looked great.

Clearly we all need to see a lot more. But Todd Viney must share the enthusiasm to draft him. That's good enough for me when I factor other, albeit limited, evidence.

Unlucky:

Defenders: Sellar and Gillies both could pressure McDonald and Garland. Dunn and Tynan could put heat on Strauss, Watts and Nicholson. Also Grimes could revert back to the midfield.

Midfielders: Evans, Magner and Taggert could all play round 1 but I'm going for the 18 year olds with class.

Forwards: Jetta and Bail could replace Byrnes and Blease but I prefer the class factor of Blease and think they'll give Byrnes a good run at it.

Rucks: I still think Jamar has a big lead over Spencer and Gawn. Same goes for Pedersen but I'd be keen to see how Fitzpatrick can improve.

All in all due to not a lot of numbers most of the midfield picks themselves. I see a distinct advantage from last year in having the second tall forward and also a raft of improved smaller options due to the recruits we've brought in and the added number of mids. The backline is very interesting. Frawley is the only cemented player but there are a bunch of young guys with some skill and then we've brought in GIllies and Sellar in the last 2 years who will compete for spots as well. I'm tempted to move Grimes to a HBF and add another mid/forward just to provide some leadership down back. The other option is Toumpas plays HBF whilst learning AFL and can use his skills.

You seem very struck by Kent. He's only 18 and could well pick up an inch upon re-measurement. I like him too.

Like BH, I love that we have drafted an 18 year mid with skills and a strong mid-section and thighs.

But I don't think we should ask much of him this year, and if he is playing than our list is far worse than I thought.

It would mean that a few of Magner, Taggert, Tynan, Sylvia, Rodan, Blease, and Tapscott are not cutting it in the part of the midfield rotation that moves forward (or vice-versa) that these names would find themselves in.

I am much more excited, in 2013, by the possible emergence of Tynan, Blease, and Tapscott, the re-emergence of Trengove, and the contributions of some leaders like Rodan and Byrnes. These are the blokes that will help out Jones and Grimes move the ball forward and get us up the ladder.

Out of the names you mentioned, I could see him overtaking Magner, Taggert, Tynan and even Tapscott pretty quickly if his body holds up, and that isn't being unfair to this group- I would think out of all the positions in our team the midfield would be the easiest to crack into at this stage.

Yep. I've said the same thing before regarding Brett Lovett's. From a football perspective he used it to perfection most times.

At the risk of getting too off-topic, sometimes some attributes contribute to a greater core strength, a lower centre of gravity and in Lovett's case hard to knock off the ball and able to keep their feet.

I hope that is the similar case with the big Kent (back on topic) regarding a strong core strength, etc.
