Brian Dixon?

Well done!! It is indeed Brian Dixon. Must admit the 1st 2 clues didnt give much away, though I thought Smithy or WJ may have twigged on the Ryan clue. Read through the info at the end, and the clues should bring it all together.

Well thats the easy quiz done and dusted, now for some hard ones lol.

I am .....?
Ans = Brian Dixon
It was said he can tell you exactly how many possessions he had during a game. With a wonky left foot, today he would be cruxified on here for being a shocking kick.
Dixon played 252 VFL games for Melbourne between 1954 and 1968, playing mostly on the wing. He had a stellar football career, playing in five premierships, winning Melbourne's Best and Fairest in 1960, while in 1961 he was selected in the All Australian Team and he also won the Tassie Medal for his performances at the 1961 Brisbane Carnival. In 2000 he was named in Melbourne's Team of the Century.
Despite still playing football for Melbourne, he entered parliament in 1964, as the member for the now abolished seat of St Kilda, representing the Liberal Party.
Being from the moderate wing of the party he clashed with then Premier Henry Bolte, especially over the hanging of Ronald Ryan which Dixon strongly opposed. (SEE clue 2)
Brian currently travels the world representing de:TAFISA and ASFAA. He is also president of AFL South Africa and takes a keen interest in other countries playing Australian rules football.

I must admit deevoted that i took "served my country" as actually playing some sport or serving during a war

so i focussed on things like the Galahs, (RDB Hassa etc etc), Cricket (Maxie etc) or Service men etc

I excluded AA because they didn't actually serve in that capacity but i suppose its probably just semantics anyway

keep em coming

Does a State politician serve his country ? I too looked at all the ex players who served in the wars.

Maybe a tad misleading but nevertheless a ripping effort from Deevoted.

Perhaps 'represented" should have been used in place of 'served', I twisted a few clues, as being Brian Dixon, I didnt want to give much away until the3rd clue. as for Saving Private Ryan. Dixon tried to stop Ronald Ryan from the hangman, I knew that was a tough clue, but if anyone remembered,it was a clue. Then the Country was related to his services related to the VFL/AFL duties promoting here and overseas. Of course the biggest fight was the merger he was involved in, arguing with Ridley etc. opposing the move.

Yeah, I remember the the hanging of Ryan in 1967 very well. My uncle was the policeman that put the shotgun to Ryan's head through the car window in January 1966. He said that Ryan was a likeable guy and that Walker was a real gangster type. My uncle left the force soon after, and was never comfortable with the hanging of Ryan.

HEAVEN OR HELL by The Oracle

Clashes between Melbourne and St Kilda are often described as battles between the forces of heaven and hell. However, based on recent performances, it’s hard to get excited about the forthcoming match between these two sides. It would be fair to say that, at the moment, both of these teams are in the doldrums. The Demons have become the competition’s slow starters while the Saints are not only slow to begin, they’re not doing much of a job finishing off their games either. About the only th

    THE BLOW by Whispering Jack

Narrm’s finals prospects took a crushing blow after the team’s insipid performance at Optus Stadium against a confident Waaljit Marawar in the first of its Doug Nicholls Round outings for 2024.  I use the description “crushing blow” advisedly because, although the season is not yet at it’s halfway mark, the Demons have now failed abysmally in two of their games against teams currently occupying bottom eight places on the ladder.  The manner in which these losing games were played out w

HALF FULL by KC from Casey

It was a case of the Casey Demons going into a game with a glass half full in their match up against the Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields on Saturday. As the list of injured and unavailable AFL and VFL listed players continues to grow and with Melbourne taking all three emergencies to Perth for the weekend on a “just in case” basis, its little brother was always destined to struggle. Casey was left with only eight AFL listed players from who to select their team but only two - an out-of-form

GAMEDAY: Rd 10 vs West Coast

It's Game Day and the Demons have returned to the site of their drought breaking Premiership to take on the West Coast Eagles in what could very well be a danger game for Narrm at Optus Stadium. A win and a percentage boost will keep the Dees in top four contention whilst a loss will cast doubt on the Dees flag credentials and bring them back to the pack fighting for a spot in the 8 as we fast approach the halfway point of the season.

    WARNING by William from Waalitj

As a long term resident of Waalitj Marawar, I am moved to warn my fellow Narrm fans that a  danger game awaits. The locals are no longer the easybeats who stumbled, fumbled and bumbled their way to the good fortune of gathering the number one draft pick and a generational player in Harley Reid last year. They are definitely better than they were then.   Young Harley has already proven his worth with some stellar performances for a first year kid playing among men. He’s taken hangers, k
