* we could conceivably start with this lineup Rnd 1 2013 barring preseason injuries

(that's basically everyone left on our list who will be fit (assuming Bartram won't), except Barry and Davis, who I don't think will be ready yet)

I don't factor him in any best 22 scenarios whatsoever.

Agree. I would be surprised that apart from injuries that he figures significantly in the current season.

Anything we get is a bonus in 2013. Wont hold my breath.

Interesting to think about this now, with the delistings announced as well. Also with the information we picked up in the interviews with our new players. Pedersen says he is playing a single role, basically a high half forward.

“They’ve got a clear, defined role for me, which is called playing a link forward and ruck,” Pedersen said.

Also, I'm wondering if we might not see Davis get a run at some point given that he was kept on. Of course, he could be treading water waiting for Dunn or Garland to get hurt and then step into the hole. I'd also love to see Taggert getting some game in and Tynan to take another step (love the build on the kid, look made to play footy). We do actually have some pretty good talent coming on with these young players.

I can honestly say I have very little idea what our team will look like next year, and that kind of thrills me. I think we can safely say that the forward line will contain Clark, Dawes, Pedersen, Byrnes and Rodan, at least for some of the time. The rest I really can't say.

That team's decent. If the forwardline can click like (I would argue) the backline has, then it's just the midfield we're waiting for. I count 11 players that could rotate through the middle in that team: Blease, Jones, Grimes, Sylvia, Howe, Byrnes, Trengove, Viney, McKenzie, Pick 4 and Rodan. That's good numbers for a midfield. We just have to see improvement from Blease, Sylvia, Trengove and McKenzie. We then have to hope that Viney and Pick 4 can step in, and impact. If all of that clicks that side has some danger about it.

Yes, I think you are pretty much spot on. When you consider the half forwards, wingman and centres all rotating off the bench.

One thing tho, I would not dismiss a fit and determined Aaron Davey. People forget how good he is. If he is fit and firing, he will be a very handy FP.

You've got to think like Mark Neeld. There are certain players he will play that some of you don't rate e.g. Magner

I think Neeld might play a 22 that looks like the following for the first game:

FB: Macdonald, Frawley, Garland

HB: Watts. McDonald, Grimes

C: McKenzie, Jones, Magner

HF: Sylvia, Dawes, Blease

FF: Byrnes, Clark, Davey

R: Jamar, Trengove, Viney

Int: Pedersen, Sellar, Rodan Sub: Jetta

You might find players like Nicholson, Dunn, Barry, Taggert, Tynan and Tapscott will be played less often as we rotate our squad for different ovals, conditions, fatigue etc.

I know the premise of the OP is best 22 but surely we can't select a side with only an aging, slowing and increasingly injury prone Russian as the sole ruckman, with occasional chop outs from Dawes or Clark? What happens when he goes down?

Jamar has always been average, he had one year where he was okay but hardly ever takes a mark, if he does he misses the goal. We have to hope Gawn can come on.

Mark Neeld thinks like many of us. He got rid of every single player many of us wanted to get rid of. He's on our page.

Love the bloke. The wins will start to come in 2013.

Sigh. There is a reason he was given a three year deal. And this in a year when around a third of the list is being turned over. The FD like what he does and will continue to play him.

He is an important player because our midfield needs to develop and the tap work he provides will be an important element in that process.

Should he be injured, Clark will ruck for the rest of the game and Spencer/Gawn will come into the side the following week. Hardly a disaster.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
