Aaron Davey reconsidering his position at Melbourne

Flash was once a very good player for Melbourne, but age and injuries have caught up with him, and opposition players have learned that they can easily get inside his head and put him off his game. There wouldn't be too many interested bidders I suspect. IIRC his current contract commenced the year after he won his B&F, so if another club happened to be interested in a trade, they could have a hefty contract to pick up, unless of course we opted to pay a slice of it (a la Wowey).

his present contract finishes next year Old.. As I recall it was considerably front ended. I dont think it too harsh a cost for another club

Pity Aaron's career has petered out. Could be exciting on his day, but has never coped with a tag and has never played a good game in a big game.

Suffered from the B&F curse after 2009, then mugged us for a four year contract and has done nothing since then.

Can't see him retiring as he has a large family to feed. Can't see the club paying him out for nix. Can't see he has much trade value.

Might be true, but me thinks this report originated from the same camp as the 'Jordan Gysberts to be delisted' report.

Didn't see it, but was there any direct quotes from AD or the MFC in the report?

Has been a fine player in his heyday. Unfortunately injured and out of form in last couple of years. Of little use to us or any other club, I would have thought.

It was a tiny little 15 second "story", no grabs or anything, so nothing official, although it is channel 7, so at least it's not coming from a 'Land poster with 17 posts and an anonymous source!

It wouldn't bother me if he retired or moved to another club. He was a shining light for us when there wasn't a lot to be happy about. Could he retire but stay involved at the club somehow and we pay him his last year of his contract?

I spoke with a bloke who plays AFL just before he became a father again so I expected him to be excited. But he was out with injury and out of sorts, said the good times he remembered seemed long gone and there was a very sombre vibe around his club at present,no matter what the young leaders might be saying. My thought at the time was that this bloke was unlikely to play out his contract..

Where the hell are these stories comming from....If there is a leak at the footy club it should be stopped post haste....or is it just the media looking for something to write or fill up a bit of time on a slow news day.....Why is there no bits of information comming from other clubs????....

See quote above about 'club vibe' Bossdog. If a coach never says anything nice about individuals, just talks stats, its not suprising that there are 'leaks'.....people want to be heard and acknowledged. If I was told that if I 'behaved' I'd be around next year I reckon I might launch a guerilla attack

So you know that he never says anything nice about players in private????....I also think that "behave" is meant as a buy in... not just for silly boys

And you know this how? It's not a huge loss, the club is trimming the fat. It's a good thing.

People acting like Davey is useless etc makes me so bloody mad... I want to meet all of you keyboard heroes and unleash on you.

Yeah he had lost a step, yeah his career is coming to an end... but show some respect for someone who has given us many great memories.

I swear, I hate 90% of MFC supporters, disloyal pack of sooks.

A tad of hypocrisy in this thread by some. I honestly hope Aaron with one year left on a contract is not pushed.

If Aaron wants one more crack at AFL we should do everything in our power to make that happen, either with us or somewhere else. However, the choice should be with Aaron.

If we want loyalty from our players we must show loyalty to our players especially to players with contracts.

I tend to agree.

Back in 2004/5/6, Davey was one of the reasons people went to Melbourne games.

He made defensive pressure for small forwards a requirement. He made chasing and tackling mandatory (and frightening, for half backs). He showed that a forward pocket can and should do more.

Yes, his career didn't hit the heights it could easily have, but in the years we were playing finals, and even since, he's been a loyal servant to the club. He's struggled of late, and for that reason it's neither surprising nor terribly disappointing that he's considering not playing for us next year, but I think it's rather sad and insulting for us to just turn on him and say things like 'get lost' and 'useless' or whatever words people are using.

Congratulate Davey on serving the club for 8 years (or however long), and just be at peace with him leaving.

Well i know the bit about the 'vibe' because the player said it to me,of course it may just his personal feeling ..what do you think? Its interesting ( to me at least) that the Tiges have just cut 6(?) ..bang...while at MFC it seems to be a pretty dirty process of 'retirements' trade request stories, rumour and innuendo and thus far the huge cull hasnt occured. I can't see how Neeld is in charge of this process myself. Just an observation from the outside of course

It sounds as though it is Aaron himself who is reconsidering his future. I'm certain that, if he think he can go on but knows he won't get a run here, then the club will facilitate a trade for him. I think talking about loyalty is overboard until we know more. Outside of Junior I think the club has stood by many of their players rather well over the years.

Has struggled this year, no doubt. Has a contract, so must play, be paid out, be traded or retire. None of these are great options financially or list wise, I would have thought.

But these reoccurring rumours about players wanting out or being pushed out is now getting ridiculous. I have read on Land that the MFC is not well liked by many of the press corp (something about someone within the club feeding them lies and was caught out), but how is it that they get any oxygen? Are there people within who are so unprofessional that they give out information or is it just pure fiction by journalists seeking payback?

This is being handled VERY badly by the club. The fact that Neeld has to go to the VFL commentators to try and correct rumours (so far) says that the media wheels have fallen off the MFC. Who's job at the MFC is this to address? Schwabby, where the £ark are you?

Also getting a tad sick of posters on here claiming to be in-the-know with decisive info. What cr@p. C'mon guys, get real. It's easy to claim anything when we are all anonymous keyboard heroes.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

    WELCOME 2024 by Meggs

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. The Matildas have been playing to record sell-out crowds across Australia and ‘Mary Fowler is God’ is chalked onto footpaths everywhere. WNBA basketball rookie sensation Caitlin Clark has almost single-handedly elevated her Indiana Fever team to unprecedented viewership, attendances and playoffs in the USA.   Our female Aussie Paris 2024 Olympians won 13 out of Australia’s all-time record 18 gol

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
