Toumpas v Stringer v Wines

For those that have watched a bit of the championships, is Martin and Hogan worth going for in the mini draft?

Using Gold Coast and Adelaide as a guide.

Mini Pick # 1 -> Pick 4 and Mid 1st round compensation pick

Mini Pick # 2 -> Pick 10 and 1st round compensation pick

So if we wanted to get mini pick one, we would most likely have to part with pick 4 and 13.

Would people be happy with....

Mini Draft Pick # 1 - Jack Martin/Jesse Hogan

Pick # 3 - Jimmy Toumpas/Jake Stringer/Ollie Wines

2nd Round Pick - Jack Viney

One consideration is that all and sundry thought that draft was pretty weak.

If we gave 4 and 13 I would expect both 17 year old picks.

But I am hard negotiator...

i'd rate toumpas and wines over martin and hogan, and we could probably get both, but it'd be hard to be opposed to it.

No way, not a hope in hell.

Your saying we package pick 4 and 13 to get Martin, not happening.

Garlett is the equal of Martin and we probably get him for 13 alone!

On top of that, at pick 4, we will get a better player than Martin.

So, 4 and 13, makes no sense at all for me.

O'Meara would go number 1 in this draft - or VERY close to it.

I think Martin is good - but the most I would go is pick 13 and a player.

Thanks for the info.

Was just using last year as a guide to how it may pan out this year. I haven't seen any of Martin or Hogan this year and don't know how they rate into the scheme of things. If they aren't clearly ahead of Wines, Toumpas or Stringer then obviously it makes no sense.

The ox said on sen that Joe is the clear number 1 pick if essendon did not get the F/S bid.

So my question is will GWS just bid on him not viney or can they bid for both.

They can bid for both.

This is how it will go:

GWS: We nominate Daniher.

Ess: We will take him with 16.

GWS: Pass.

GC: We nominate McDonald.

NM: We will take him with Pick 14.

GC: We nominate Viney.

Melb: We will take him at 3.

Obviously that is just an example of how it will go but you get the jist.

daniher is frighteningly exciting - i absolutely loathe essendon and they're getting a terrific kpp very cheap. paul salmon-esque.

I did not no till today that anyone thought this kid would go number 1.

GWS must bid for him with sheedy at the helm

Im very sure GWS and GC will not bid for jack given the top end talent they risk.

Im sure the MFC will call there bluff and say thanks for whitfield or toumpas.

After tonight i think Jack is maybe pick 5 but not in the class of Toumpas and whitfield.

Yes i think todd listen to me and told his boy to just crusie through the carnival.

Wines is a good player, but not what we need. Honest, hard working, big bodied midfielder.

I wonder about Toumpas. What is his pace like? For the outside player that he is at the moment, he needs to be a bit more dynamic. But he's very smart and uses the ball brilliantly. Does his starring game translate into starring at AFL level?

Stringer is hard to judge. He's got a lot of wonderful attributes, but he's so ridiculously unfit at the moment that we just don't know how good he is/will be. I'm sure those that saw him pre-injury (ie, 2 years ago) will have a much better handle on him, and those reports are glowing. Can he get back to that? Probably, but it's a risk.

Sam Mayes was very good. Super runner and will be a damaging player. O'Rourke was very smooth. Very excited by Martin and is exactly the sort of player we should be targetting. Damaging player who is good inside, outside and overhead. Really liked Wright - fast, direct and competitive, although will probably fit into the area between our compo and 3rd round.

I think your totally under selling toumpas and wines there just what this club needs the very best mids coming through the ranks in a super draft.

The problem I see immediately is that with our possession of Pick 4 - if Viney has to be taken at 3 - he will effectively be number 4 in the draft as we are still able to take the '3rd best' in the draft.

It's a bit of a hair to split if you say if we had to give Pick 3 we won't - but we would give Pick 4.

I really think they will not bid on Jack.

Lets hope im right and the mighty demons might finally get things right come november.

Wines seems to be the D Martin of this draft and will be just what we need.

Even if they bid i mean viney and wines will be a great start.

Who are the hardest, fastest & most skilled Mids under pressure in this draft? Wines is one, Viney is another. Who of the other Mids fall into this category?

Martin looks skilled & is also lightning quick however I think there would be question marks over whether he could impact contests consistently at AFL or in finals with that frame. What's Tsoumpas inside ball winning ability & pace like?

Btw, why do so many posters spell Toumpas incorrectly ?

Thanks

olisik made a good point in the Under 18 carnival thread about Toumpas, Stringer and Wines.

I don't watch the under 18s very often but looking at today's game I would go with:-

■ Toumpas;

■ Stringer; or

■ Wines

Thoughts?

I'd be very happy with any of these 3 boys @ pick 3,,, & 4...

If I could get (Toumpas & Wines), or (Toumpas & Stringer), or (Wines & Stringer) or add Whitfield to the medium mid selections + Stringer, at Picks 3 & 4, I's be rapt.

Add Viney with our 2nd Rnd, or we'll wait for him to come back home. Risk it !

Mid 1st Rnd comp' pick, any who are still avail' > Mayes, Vlastuin, Colquhoun, Kennedy, O’Rourke...

If we can't get Stringer, then try to spend the Mid 1st Rnd Pick + a name player as incentive for U-17 pick (*Hogan). Nothing more.

Keep the picks 3 & 4 for our own selections, & 2nd Rnd for Viney.

Out of the three mentioned I rate them Toumpas, Stringer, Wines.

Meaning I'm hoping we can draft

3. Toumpas

4. Stringer

13. Garlett

26 (2nd round). Viney

I reckon we'll be able to get Viney 2nd round. GC wont want to risk giving up Whitfield and GWS wont want to risk giving up Grundy when they really need a ruckman.

Toumpas at 3, Stringer at 4, Mayes at 12, Viney second round. I also really like Wines, but top 5 is too early and he won't last til 12.

Stringer is a brute.

That said, we might off-load one of our first round picks.

This, mostly. I'd prefer Kennedy at 12(13?). Seems to be able to go forward and CRUMB!

All being said, If we are forced to take Viney with 3, I'd probably go Stringer ahead of Toumpas with pick 4.

Are you 100% sure that's how it works?

I agree that's a likely process, but it's equally possible that each team only gets one swing at a F/S nomination and if they're trumped then it moves on to the next club.

pretty certain that RPFC has it right with the latest changes to F/S that were announced last week.

Each F/S nomination is offered to the lowest club first and they say yes or no, ....etc

I've read elsewhere that the knock on Stringer is his pace. If so I may have to reconsider may recently acquired manlove for him, because there's very few slow players that dominate AFL footy. Yesterday was the first time I'd seen him play and he looked like a smart inside beast, but one showing on tv isn't enough to go on. He has been injured. Someone else said his pace is ok. I'll watch his 20 metre sprint test with interest at the combine,

Nathan Wright also looked really good.

As Axis mentioned Toumpas doesn't look dynamic, but he screams 250 game pro. Also, he's having hip surgery in two weeks, so that may be impacting his burst speed.

Picks 3 and 4 look like they'll deliver a couple of quality players. It's a shame I'm once again excited by the upcoming draft.

The locals are no longer the easybeats who stumbled, fumbled and bumbled their way to the good fortune of gathering the number one draft pick and a generational player in Harley Reid last year. OVER YET? by KC from Casey

The Friday evening rush hour clash of two of the VFL’s 2024 minnows, Carlton and the Casey Demons was excruciatingly painful to watch, even if it was for the most part a close encounter. I suppose that since the game had to produce a result (a tie would have done the game some justice), the four points that went to Casey with the win, were fully justified because they went to the best team. In that respect, my opinion is based on the fact that the Blues were a lopsided combination that had

Our game is one where the result is often decided by centimetres; the touch of a fingernail, a split-second decision made by a player or official, the angle of vision or the random movement of an oblong ball in flight or in its bounce and trajectory. There is one habit that Melbourne seems to have developed of late in its games against Carlton which is that the Demons keep finding themselves on the wrong end of the stick in terms of the fine line in close games at times when centimetres mak

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was
