There, I've said it. Moloney is starting to look like he's just been grandstanding, instead of leading, all these years. But that's the kind of reaction a player can expect when they clear their management to publicly shop them around when their weekly place on the team is under pressure from a late rookie-draft pick.

Probably a fair comment but it's very difficult when you've been a stand out and then have rapidly become something less. It's not Moloney's fault that he was a big fish in a very small pond of talent - at least while the smaller fish were developing their their talent. Managing player expectations is a key component of a footy club and this, like Junior's 'retirement', needs to be managed with sensitivity. Club culture is partly a reflection of the way we deal with the development of young players and the changing roles of senior players. Poorly handled, they can become poisonous.

I'm sure he can continue to make a contribution but he needs to be convinced that it's a worthwhile one.

so when are we going for a flag tony?

i might take a break until near that time....appreciate any information

I would prefer if we take shifts. You go first.

If the current side are going to be any good (and i think they will be), it will be in 2-3 years - is Maloney going to be a big part of that? He will be 30-31 years old.

Does he provide the persistent high work rate and defensive grunt that Neeld clearly expects of every player in the side?

The answer to both questions is, at this stage, a big "no".

Obviously we want to keep experienced, hard bodied players, but if he wants to leave, then good luck to him.

Moloney is reacting to all the crap that has been posted on him here at the forum

After losing scully last year, I don't care who leaves...... He can [censored] off to Carlton for all I care!!!!!!!!!

Posted

Interestingly, Neeld in his weekly comedy session with Robbo, said that the older players were slower at adapting to the new style than the younger ones. So I suspect Moloney is behind the curve at the moment (frustrated and confused) but will come good in time.

Again Moloney can go, but if its free agency we get nothing in return??? And keep Jamar at all costs, our ruck stocks would be terribly exposed!

AFL grants compensation

Note to Brent:

The best way to attract a good deal from an AFL club is to ... you know ... play some decent footy against good opposition.

Shopping yourself out in the media in early May smacks of desperation.

Interesting to see what sort of compensation we would get for Jamar.

Pros: All Australian 2010; suitor would need to pay big to shoe horn him out of Melbourne.

Cons: past his best; doesn't take enough marks; dreadful kick for goal; not getting any better; not getting any younger, which at 30-odd is an issue.

Not sure if, like $cully, his wage at a new club would be taken into account, but I reckon we may get a second-rounder. Can't see the AFL offering more.

I reckon GWS would be mad to pay over the odds for Jamar, but I thought the same about $cully.

why are we all talking like he has left already??

He is one of the most consistent players we have had the last few years,

and, i think, one of the most loved by supporters.

"Breathe in ... hhhhhhhhmmm ..... Breathe out ... hhhaaaaaaaa .... relaaaaxxxx ....

You are getting very sleeeeeepy. Soon you will bliiiiiiissfully ignore the fact you're sitting 0-6 and below the Suns on the ladder.

Your midfield is actually muuuuuuch better than the stats suggest.

Breathe in ... hhhhhhhhmmm ..... Breathe out ... hhhaaaaaaaa .... relaaaaxxxx."

Jamar is worth more to the club than Moloney in the next 3 years.

by a country mile or three !!

I think you may very well be on the money here. Maybe not all but certainly the old adage.. old dogs..new tricks comes to mind.

Ive a feeling theat Neeld knows he is building a team , in his image, not quite from scratch but not far off it. There WILL be some players all but ready to go from the existing bunch. Also a handful open and able to learn and so be added to the new-team going forward and then theres the dead weights.

It's not right to write Moloney off as yet. As I mentioned above, it's only recently that we delisted James McDonald and we are still paying a price. IIRC, the argument was that we had to Mel space for young ones. We then discovered that we had created a leadership vacuum that not only nature abhorred, the fans weren't that impressed either.

Again, as I said, I don't think that, if he left it would be so difficult to replace him but frankly, we don't want to lose anyone who can still make a strong contribution. I think that someone like Moloney obviously needs a bit more assistance in adapting his game than the younger ones. Given his contribution over the last three years, there is a bit of a debt. If we don't show loyalty to players, it's unlikely we'll get much in return.

Difference is that McDonald was performing.

Maloney probably [censored] off re leadershp group ....and another rebuild. If he and / or Jamar goes, do we get any kind of compo?....or do they just walk?

I actually heard that he was more [censored] off that no one on Demonland can spell his name correctly?

his hammy wasn't though... (at the time)

Indeed and it seemed more about not preventing younger players from getting games. With the benefit of hindsight, it was significantly wrong. What we now seem to have realized is that we lacked both proven leadership and proven hardness over the ball (Jimmy Mc provided both). If we'd had ample stocks of those, one person wouldn't have made such a difference. We didn't, it did!

Regardless, it would be a much better result if Moloney lifts his performance and imparts some of his passion to the younger players.

True.

And that's why I supported the decision and still do.

It was the right one at the time.

He kinda reminds me of a slinky descending down some steps.... Lots of movement, but no real speed.

But I digress...

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
