Viney to head recruiting

Gooner

I think MFC should have the best recruiting manager it can get. i think role is important and would hope that we are not without one in 8 months time.

I would have thought Viney would be looking at potentials in other clubs to fill identified holes in our list/side in the ensuing period.

"To that end Viney will sit in match-committee, selection and coaching-review meetings throughout the year, as well as continuing the search for talent."

Anyone else think that he may be stretching himself a bit thin with all of these commitments?

Barry P was a full time recruiting chief not someone who had his fingers in 3 other pies during the week. This is concerning. Why would the club allow 10 months to get a new recruiting chief?

I can see Neeld being heavily involved again. I wonder how many kids will email him this year?

Massive fail if he is. He should be focussed on coaching and should not be drifting off to check prospects in the junior leagues.

I would hope that MFC is working on a short list and have yet to snare the ideal candidate and Viney is a stop gap....I hope.

And Emma Quayle is a journo with an opinion on the draft. i want someone who has cut their teeth in club development and recruiting.

We've done the re-build and so recruiting shouldn't be a massive issue in the short term .A few tweaks here and there and making sure the boy gets enough meat at dinner time is about all we need from Todd .I like the fact that Todd is loyal and has been given a job as a thank you .Don't panic-we've out done all the recruiters in the league-now it's time to start the party .

Beg your pardon. We still have the compo picks to use. How is Viney going to be able to scour the country for the best talent? We already have one of the small recruiting teams of the Mel based clubs and having the role split only demeans it further.

I would be further worried that he is gifted the job for loyalty. Be nicer if we appointed the right person for the role on credentials.

And the jury is indeed still out if we have outdone the other AFL recruiters at all. False sense of achievement.

We have question marks over Morton, Strauss, Blease. We have 2 compo picks for Scully. And its early days on Watts, Trengove and others although their futures are good.

Nothing to sit and party our laurels on at all. Quite the opposite. Much hard work still to be done.

Looks like his first public decision will be to call out his son's name.

Interesting that a full time recruiting manager is still planned but Viney is still calling the shots at a draft eight months away!

Yep, makes me wonder if we'll be going for More established players this Year, prior to another youth Push for 2013.

Players like Gaff or Pendles or a Boak if avail', after Viney Jnr...

I've ordered the Moet and the ice-you can scour the country for talent if you want but we've got most of it .

Im very happy to have todd leading in this area im sure watching jack over the years would have put him in a good spot to see what kids are doing well. Todd is a real gem of a guy and i think the things that made him a strong player will help him in this role. The club is very lucky to have todd as a loyal servant in a time of need.So good luck todd and all the best im sure you will do a great job for us.You already have given us one gem of a kid. Wow Rhino. Think you need to take a step back and read the release again about what is going on.

It is quite obvious that the club didn't think BP was going to leave and his timing left the club in a position where they could not secure a suitably qualified head of recruiting to manage this year given it was already January. Instead the club has taken the opportunity to appoint Viney who already worked in the field to a degree.

They also have a specific person to look after the mature age recruiting from other clubs and leagues and someone else who focuses specifically on the junior pathways.

It also gives them plenty of time to head hunt the best in the business.

Look at the situation as it stood, we were left without a head of recruiting in January. All other clubs were locked away which meant we were probably looking at someone with the 18th best credentials and then only in a position to offer them a 10 month contract before we would be looking to replace them. No recruiter would accept that deal and it is not great for the club either. Instead they have utilised resources within with someone who knows exactly what the club wants and where it is heading and they have made the best of the situation.

It's not all doom and gloom Rhino.

I like the structure of Todds new role. That way recruiting managers don't run off on their own deciding what they think the needs of the team are. Or following the mantra of picking "best available", even if not needed.

However, the concern is this:

" the club will look to employ a full-time recruiting manager to eventually take on that responsibility, a role Barry Prendergast played until January this year when he joined Carlton. The person appointed to that role is expected to take on the job in 2013 and will report to Viney."

So we have no-one in the role for this year......

How much of Prendergasts data went with him? Especially for this coming year.

Maybe none....and maybe there is not a snowflakes chance in hell of recruiting someone to fill the role this year, as all the clubs have their recruitment teams in place.

Certainly highlights the under-rated value of the recruiting team to any Club.

We seem to have reached a point where we criticise everything the club does without first knowing the reasons behind it.

I doubt they would have woken up one day and thought, "Todd's been loyal let's promote him", I would assume they have done what they have done because it was either the best or only short term option.

Viney may well be heading Recruiting for 2012, but i would suggest we still have other scouts out there working who before reported to BP.

They would now report to Todd...Not perfect but we have this year to do the Recruiting of another Head Recruiter...

Carlscum take our staff again....Bastards..

I'm glad its only till next year. I reckon the club has got a person in mind who is contracted till then.

what makes you think its not till nextyear?

the way I read it, it could be anytime in the future. when they do get one he will still report to Viney who will do the actual draft day selections no matter what

If anyone needed a bit more clarification, via Twitter:

Cameron Schwab @CamSchwab

For those who have asked, Todd Viney's role in 2012 will be fully focused on recruiting. We'd never compromise on this critical area

sounds like he wants the job full time....Having Neil Craig on board would allow this opportunity i suspect.

Good Luck Todd....get those kids ready for the Multiple Flag Tilt...

Hmmm, I just don't like this. Besides the obvious which is the massive conflict of interest in having to recruit your own son there are so many issues.

What does Viney know of the kids in this years draft class? Every other clubs recruiter has watched this batch go through the under 16's and has extensive knowledge of them. If it is for a one year as the article seems to mention then why wouldn't we promote our number 2 recruiter who at least has a head start.

I've got no problem with Viney being involved in an overseeing role as a link between Neeld and the recruiting, but why take on recruiting as well.

I'm starting to worry that our football department is full of people with fancy job titles who probably don't contribute much to the day to day work of recruiting talent and developing it. It's trademark Schwab to me.

You are tilting at windmills. His son has already been recruited and has signed a 5 year contract with the mfc last year. You must have noticed?

Anything left to do is mere formalities

No conflict of interest here

    GALLANT by KC from Casey

The world “gallant” is not one that is readily acceptable to losing teams in our game of football so when it was used in the context of the Casey Demons’ loss to Sandringham in yesterday’s match at Casey Fields, it left a bitter taste in the mouth.  The Demons went into the game against the St Kilda affiliated Zebras with the advantage of playing on their home turf (not that this has been a major asset in 2024) and with very little else going in their favour. The Saints have close to a full

    MEANWHILE by Whispering Jack

… meanwhile, at about the same time that Narrm was putting its feet on the accelerator to obliterate the long-suffering Euro-Yroke combination, I heard someone mention in passing that Kuwarna was leading Waalitj Marawar by a whopping 46 to 1 halfway through the second quarter of their game over in Adelaide. “What is football coming to?” I asked myself.  In front of my eyes, the Demons were smashing it through the midfield, forcing turnovers and getting the footy to their forwards who w

HEAVEN OR HELL by The Oracle

Clashes between Melbourne and St Kilda are often described as battles between the forces of heaven and hell. However, based on recent performances, it’s hard to get excited about the forthcoming match between these two sides. It would be fair to say that, at the moment, both of these teams are in the doldrums. The Demons have become the competition’s slow starters while the Saints are not only slow to begin, they’re not doing much of a job finishing off their games either. About the only th
