Yeah. Not meaning to be pedantic but scully has nothing to do with clark.

Clark was for pick 12 in 2011 draft.

So if stars were to align it would be two compo picks for gaff (or gaff for scully) and Viney for first round f/s pick in 2012.

But we wouldn't have been able to afford Clark's salary if we'd retained Scully. So yes, Scully does have something to do with Clark.

I believe RB was alluding to the fact that the $'s saved by not retaining HWFUA were invested in securing Clark.

Draft picks are one thing, salary is another.

Anyway, back to Gaff.

If he goes to another level this year then he will be worth the 2 compensation picks. I don't believe WCE would accept anything less other than possibly one pick and a young, proven performer.

If we did give 2 compo picks for Gaff (and its an if), how does that impact the securing of Jack Viney? Are we not committed to using one of the compo picks under the F/S rule?

And if Gaff is or was an MFC player upon signing with MFC would he have to change his first name to "Jack"?

Trade 1 x Compo pick and Cale Morton for Gaff

or even Morton fro Gaff straight swap

Nope, compo picks are separate from bidding for F/S picks.

And before we go down this road (not aimed at you, RR): F/S nomination is BEFORE trade week, so we WILL have to spend our first-round pick on JV.

Rhino, my understanding is we don't use the compo picks for F/S selection it will be just a normal draft pick more than likely our first round pick.

I like Gaff as a player and WCE would want our compo picks but Essendon might have the same once Hurley goes to GWS.

Before trade week that will be settled.

I am looking for clarification whether we have to take Viney with our lowest pick or our lowest non-comp pick.

But when it is time to trade we will have three picks in the top 20 and Viney will be assigned one of those with two picks ready to be shipped or used.

Wouldn't impact at all as Viney will cost us our normal first round pick, as other clubs will not let us get him for less than that. Compo picks are additional to that first round pick and only in use if we activate them before the season starts.

The eagles have had a falling out with the whole morton family, when mitch left for the tigers. Feud type scenario.

No morton will ever play for WC ever again.

Also since when did people rate Cale? oh we are making fair trades.... i get it

Thanks Redleg, rpfc, Drs Drake and Mubutu (its always good to get a 2nd opinion from a doctor) for the clarification.

And i agree with Old that we would have to part with both compos to get Gaff.

Well when a player starts in the centre square, i naturally assume that this is part of his forte. You don't put a player into the guts, if he cannot extract the thing in the first place.

Yeah well, I think we have in/unders (1st touch getters), and then there is the inside player who I think is a bit of an all round Mid, & then there are outside types, (finishers) who are becoming less in todays congested footy.

So a Gaff with his great footskills & ball winning ability, would be perfect for us.

So Mids have strengths & weaknesses. Gary Ablett jnr would be handy, granted, but he's not avail to us.

If Essendon did lose Hurley this year, & got 1st Rnd compo picks this year, I believe they can't use them in this years 1st Rnd, or till the end of. Something similar to that.

Gaff leaving WCE will be up to him. Where he goes may be up to him and his management, as he could threaten to go to GWS either as an uncontracted player for compensation or in PSD to them and Eagles could get nothing. If he seriously wants to come home and prefers Melbourne we are in the prime position to get him with our 2 compo picks being used in a deal, or a pick and a player, or a combination involving other picks being swapped etc.

I would think if we wanted Gaff and he wanted us, he would eventually get here, as long as we were reasonable in our dealings with the Eagles.

On the other hand this could all be paper talk designed to inflate his next contract price.

While we are talking Gaff I would also be letting Caddy's manager know he would be very welcome at Melbourne.

Imagine getting Viney, Gaff and Caddy for say our first pick in 2012 draft, both compo picks, player to Eagles and Suns or a swap of lower picks. Players like Spencer from Queensland and Jetta or Lawrence from WA may wish to go home and be part of a trade deal.

What we are all forgetting is that there could be Victorian clubs with higher picks than our compo picks in 2012 draft who may end up with the whip hand.

I think we actually had the option of activating our picks last year but we decided not to because the AFL bumped them down the order so as not to infringe on the orange brigade - I may be wrong.

I'm thinking any future compo picks won't be bumped though.

Can someone clarify?

you sure about that?

Glen Jackovich & Karl Langdon discussed WCE trading for Cale at the end of last year on their sports talk back radio show? Both of these guys are still involved att he eagles so i dont know that you're 100% right there

I have heard from many sources that this is the case.

Morton (mitch) got dropped from the eagles team prior to a finals series. Mortons dad is meant to be a tool, pushing agenda's ect after that mitch ended up at richmond

WC passed on Morton highly rated junior for Masten at 3

This is what i have heard from a number of WC supporters

Three players that will most likely be delisted at the end of the year add no value to trades.

Judd turned down all the other suitors because he had previously committed to Carlton. Everything else was for show.

Exactly and thats the key, you must get the player to commit to you. Then we have the upper hand.

Many here think we were ripped off with Scully compensation.

Gaff has shown his worth as a legitimate pick 4 with some years of development.

If you won't pay both picks for Gaff, there's inconsistency.

Thats the Eagles problem not ours. If he wants to return home. Tell me one other Victorian club that could even get close to what we could offer?

We are in a very dominant position next year, thanks to the Scully compensation. Giving it all up for 1 player would be short-sighted unless we where talking about a Goddard or a Scotty P - Gaff is neither of those (yet).

Spot on we could have had the best facilities on earth it was all about the Visy money.

No we couldn't as you have to nominate BEFORE the season starts that you are going to use them

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
