I think , they may gain a recruiting Manager at first. I think the compo picks will be looked at more closely around June/July based on our position on the ladder and the quality of the Under 18's at National comp.

The decison on whether to activate the compo picks has to be made pre-season, please see this thread:

Such a great compensation from AFL HQ when we must activate our picks before the season even starts. That is what is called fair for having a number one draft pick lured deceitfully away. The AFL continue to astound me. I think i hate the AFL more than Carlscum...maybe, it's mighty close.

They can't leave it until the end of the year and "see where you finish".

Rubbish. The draft pick could easily be activated after the draft camp, well before the ND. Why should it have to be activated months in advance??

Because you could manipulate the draft picks by tanking and getting pick 3, 4 and 12 or whatever.

Has to be decided before the season.

It's the right move.

I agree. Why would anyone tank just to get a player who can be stolen from you a couple of years later and then you are left with a couple of mid first round picks, who are 3 years behind the player you got originally.

There is no such thing as tanking in the AFL.

Of course i have thought it through..as it stands we don't even know who is in the draft.

Tanking is not an option this club should consider again for a very long time. It is not that good.

These draft picks are alive for 5 years, we should know exactly who to target.

As it stands we have to declare our option for this year within days/weeks ??

Sorry if there is already an existing thread about this, i wasn't able to find one.

Does anyone know what the cut off date exactly is to nominate to use these? Just i havn't heard of any teams mentioning these yet and the start of the season is just around the corner.

good article, really looks like none of the other picks should interfere with ours to much besides maybe the Bulldogs.

Geelongs should be after ours as they ll finish above us on the ladder and GWS may bank theirs.

Summed it up perfectly... Especially the highlighted phrase. Basically thats all we are left with, the AFL and everyone thought it was great compensation but really it isnt, it's going to be hard to get a star or stars with mid round picks even if its a superdraft.

For those that care, see 2001 superdraft and tell me how many players you would draft from picks 10-25 ish. Very hit and miss. But at the end of the day its our loss, lets hope the recruiters get it spot on.

Compensatory Picks that effect ours:

2010 GAblett Jnr compensatory pick:

Mid 1st Rnd Pick - Geelong >GCSuns > GWS Giants... Likely to be before Our Picks. (2012) To be Taken immediately after the Cats 1st Pick.

----------------------------------

2011 TScully compensatory pick:

1st Rnd Pick - Melbourne... to be taken immediately after our 1st Rnd pick, in Nominated season.

Mid 1st Rnd Pick - Melbourne...

----------------------------------

Others Picks that are in our area:

2011 Callan Ward compensatory Pick:

1st Rnd Pick - Western Bulldogs... doggies are likely to finish above us on the ladder (2012), so their comp pick would be later than Ours if we activate our Pick/s.

2011 Phil Davis compensatory Pick:

1st Rnd Pick - Adelaide... Crows are also likely to finish above Us on the Ladder (2012), so their pick would likely be later than Ours if we activate our Pick/s.

_____________________________

So it looks like the Only comp pick that would be ahead of Us would be (GAblett jnr) GWS, (or what happens if they ontrade that Pick)?

I think from memory if they on-trade "that pick" it will still be where GWS would of taken it. So a big win for a club high on the ladder.

Not if Adelaide and Footscray finish below us ... which is what we're all hoping.

On-traded picks keep their original position, tied to the original club.

IF. I think they're more mature than Us and have been together as a team longer.

The Doggies Underachieved Last Year in a Tumultuous season. They're way better than where they Finished. Top 8 for mine.

Adelaide are a mature Club with a list that has been together for quite some time, so I don't share your Lofty expectations.

I think we'll finish around 9th/10th..

I reckon the Bullies will be around 6th or 7th.

So, in a nutshell, I expect us to get a good deal @ the 2012 Trade/Draft Table...

IMO we'll start to 'Click' in 2013 & Onwards.

This year IMO will be taken up with getting to know the gameplan structures & the Staff working out there coordinations & the Players development.

2013 to be Much more settled & prosperous...

Probably one of the more realistic and smartest posts Ive heard for awhile, I would have to agree. It wont just "click" straight away.

What I think may work in our favour, is that GWS hold so many of the compensation picks.

As they have so many young players on their list already, the value of a kid now would appear less than one they can get in 3 or 4 years time.

Current value vs future value.

GWS may decide they are better off making sure they have a high end talent injection in a few years time, rather than just a few months.

I don't actually have any lofty expectations - just pointing out that if we do well on the field, that will cost us - a couple of places - in the draft.

From my Understanding, the GWS comp' Picks, Must be used by the End of 2015 Drafting period... The Suns comp' Picks Must be Used by the finish of the 2014 drafting period...

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
