It never fails to impress me , the collective genius of many posters. You know who you are. You'll be the first to get your blood boiling upon reading a post like this. You'll be the annoying wannabe expert posting their first offerings hoping no one spots the troll. You'll be the ones who reasoning is void, It'll all be huff and puff and blow your choice down.. Youd also be, I bet the ones whod shirk a real contest and masquerade bravado. We've all met your type. Its easy to scout a pack and unleash hits here and there.

Melbourne needed a new coach. It needed someone who was grounded in the modern game, someone who could influence ours. The first job is to identify who these people are. The immediate call was to a senior experienced coach. That does have merit. You get someone whocan do the job, whos shown they known the job and have gotten results. There were few on that list and as it would turn out none actually available to be pinched, not by us. This is a pivotal understanding in all of this. Who could WE get. Freo very cunningly went outside the box. Kudos to them. Clarko decided to remain content at Hawthorn. Malthouse, well who really knows what Mickey is up to and suffice to suggest timing is everything and the current schedule of things just didnt faciitate much. Thats life sometimes.

Here is where for many it gets interesting if not outright amusing.. Many , myself included , would have taken Malthouse in a heartbeat. Many it seems , and this instance not myself , cant seee past their own stupidity and ignorance as to who makes up the collective that many on the footy outside ( and thats us ) that is the real Malthouse effect. His team.

So we have a bemusing situation where malthouse is fine, but the guy whohe entrusts the most , the man he has annointed as the most worthy of consideration, the man who moulded thir current defence and midfield ISNT ??

Buckley is about to take over Collingwood. But hes NOT the current senior asistant. Neeld is. We wanted the Master...but dont consider the master's apprentice ?? Thats laughable and that sexactly what Im doing...laughing at the collective 'genius' on display here.

Thankgod most of you have absolutely nothing to do with any real decision affecting this club.

I hadnt considered Neeld much though my constant footy companions ( family ..who are mainly filth) kept suggesting we ought to . Not so much because they didnt like us to get Mick, but because they realised much of his success is actually attributable to the likes of those who he places absolute faith in.

Neeld is an inspired selection. Wil lhe be sucessful? Only time wil tell. But you cant make selections using hindsight on events not happened. You can involve hindsight in considering what you may or may not have got right last time. When we went to the trough last time we wanted someone who could develop young men into players. We got that. . This time we need someone who can take young players and mould them into a team. Mark Neeld has shown he can do this and quite successfully .

So now the whisper is Neeld with Neil craig.

That is an interesting scenario. But I'll wait till I hear it from the club as the media rumour mill has been pretty poor of late....

Posted

It looks like Neeld is indeed a done deal but there are some differences between the way the HUN and the Age see things will go regarding whether Neeld will have a senior assistant and whether that person will be Neil Craig.

Sheahan thinks Craig is likely to be appointed to work with Neeld while John Pierik and Caro at the Age say it's understood that "Neil Craig and Rodney Eade have been ruled out".

Garry Lyon writes for the Age and on that basis alone, I suspect that Craig might be out of the picture.

Yeah righto mate he's Norm Smith and Yabby Jeans incarnate. Get a grip yourself. We've been down this path before. Didn't work then, won't work now. I'm livid and expect a lot of other Melbourne supporters will be too.

I'm not quite livid, but I'm really disappointed, the more I think about it. I can see why you're upset. This just smells of past failures whichever way I look at it.

Although I am pretty happy with the appointment, I found the bit in Pierik and Caro's article a bit alarming.

Quote "Neeld will have the job of not only improving the on-field performance of a team that this week lost midfield defector Tom Scully to Greater Western Sydney but will also need to unify a fractured football department."

Understand that there are problems there; but this sounds like he is to play a conciliatory role. I am hoping this means that he can keep whomever he wants, clean out the rest and build from there.

The worriers and the handwringers are out in force...

I don't know him and would like to hear the man speak once before judging away his personality, character, and professional future...

If we couldn't get an experienced coach - at least we stole some IP from Collingwood.

And that is a good start.

Your making sense mate. I believe we got the best coach AVAILABLE. Sometimes I wonder if the big fish was ever an option considering Ross Lyon has done his own deal with fremantle and according to his management was never available. And who knows what Malthouse is doing?

Posted

Well what senior coach did people want. Malthouse has said he wont coach next year and at the moment we dont want to waste funds paying him out next year because eddie will sue us. Well thats what he has threatened to do. Malthouse was never an option.

Clarko said no, Eade obviously wasnt the right fit and Im not sure Dean Laidley was either and Lyon had his own deal going on. We had to get our coach before the others nabbed him. Neeld was Malthouse's right hand man last year and said he was his 2ic and most important coach. Raised a few eyebrows because they said what about Bucks but Neeld has creditentials.

Im sick of the negativity. Lets try to be positive. We have got a good person. Dont sack him before he has had a chance. Also im sure we will have a game plan that can work and wont confuse the players like Dean's did.

Anyway Liam Pickering said on his show this morning who is Marks manager it will be midday.

I find it hard to understand the notion that an "experienced" coach can just be picked up off the street like so many freo memberships right now. that coupled with the assumption that experienced = successful. Northey, experienced, Danners, experienced (and probably still available), Eade, experienced. Lots of coaching years in that trio, how many flags?

I'm happy with Neeld, it seems to me (based on public knowledge as I don't talk to filth supporters or listen to Mick Malthouse, or know someone who's brother knows someone at the club)that Neeld knows what he is doing and can communicate to the playing group an ethos that has been lacking since the 90's.

Anyway, what the hell can we do about it anyway? The club has chosen him, yet posters here will continue to right page upon page of meaningless dribble about how the dee's have failed again...

Get behind the club, get behind mark neeld. and get behind the playing group (most importantly) and look at 2012 as the year that we finally turn potential into success....

For the club to start losing it's shocking culture it needs to start from it's supporters. If you don't like the appointment nick off to GWS with the other sook.

Some people are potting a guy that chose to coach us over 2 others.. Pull your heads in, only one thing will make this club great and thats unity from ALL areas..

I suspect Caro and co are fishing in the main...We will know shortly.

I doubt it will be Neelds job to smooth over any fractures. That is I imgaine why Gaz is looking to provide other manpower into the roles to sought this out.

Not sure about eating ice cream but he has not coached an AFL team before. Consequently "novice" is correct descriptor.

Wikipedia: "A novice is a person or creature who is new to a field or activity. The term is most commonly applied in religion and sports"

Macquarie Dictionary: "One who is new to the circumstances"

Au contraire mon frere.

He coached Collingwood to a 62 point win in the NAB cup.

If true, I reckon we've done as well as we could without landing a big fish senior coach. We wanted Malthouse, we wanted Clarkson, and we wanted Lyon (but I definitely wouldn't have wanted him for the Freo $$$$), we didn't get them but I have no doubt we have got the next best thing. We have got seemingly the best credentialed untried coach and most sought after, and we have got a senior assistant with great experience in fitness and applying it to AFL.

I can see our assistant coaching structures getting a major reshuffle by the time pre-season comes around. IMO it looks like we should be very happy with these appointments, and I look forward to certain players having a clean slate to kick start their careers again.

In a few brief sentences you have made the most logical, thoughtful comment about this appointment. It's all very well bleating about MFC's failure to appoint an 'experienced' coach, but by a simple process of logic if none are available the next best thing is the apparently best credentialled assistant from a successful environment. If that is not Neeld I'll eat my club scarves.

The 'experience' argument that leaves the whingers underwhelmed is full of dubious assumptions anyway. Decades of experience don't guarantee that a coach will be able to transfer his methods with success to another club with another culture. Sometimes success for a coach is, in a sense, made for him by the players, or the team and the coach have a symbiotic relationship that can not be reproduced elsewhere.

We can't be sure Neeld will resurrect our club on the field; that's a given. We couldn't be sure MM would do it, and being an intelligent coach (if unpleasant personality) I have no doubt he would be the first to admit that. But the intelligent, experienced successful master-coach inside the unpleasant personality thinks Neeld has the goods, and there's no reason to think that MM's football brain is not as capable of making a sound judgment on this as anyone else in the land. The process whereby the panel came to their decision is therefore completely logical, and I am very content with the appointment. If a clean-out of the dullards in the assistant roles can be effected we are half way towards a big improvement next year.

Well at least most of the posters seem pretty up beat about this guy so hopefully the threads will be positive next season....seems strange timing given the filth have a few matches to go, I guess hes not senior coach though, so probably wouldnt effect that much....

Surely you know better than this WWS

Thanks for that J_t, a good insight there.

Wow, clearly you must've been right in the inner sanctum when we were selecting our last coach. Otherwise, how would you they "kicked sand in the face" of Sheedy? Sheedy went for a job and presented for it, Bailey presented better. Does choosing someone over him constitute insulting him?I will probably be the odd one out here, but I'm backing in the last selection panels decision on Bailey. You can only choose the best person based on what is presented to you, Bailey promised a period of development, where he'd play kids and play for draft picks, he has done that. I always questioned whether he'd have to ability to get us to the next level, but I felt at that time the concern was secondary to what we required. So was their appointment of Bailey wrong? IMO it was not.Was their sacking of Bailey wrong? Hell no, he'd taken the list as far as he could.Am I glad we didn't get Sheedy in the beginning? You damn right I am, he is nothing more than a promotional coach at GWS, make no mistake the real brains at the Giants is Choko.

Very, very good post there Pates. Nice to hear some sense

I was of exactly the same opinion rpfc, and then on someones insistance I looked on youtube at his appearance on AFL Insider. It is only my observation, but he seems very astute, very well spoken (good communicator) and seems to command respect from Lynch, Scott and the Chief, which says alot to me. I still don't know him, and will reserve my judgement till I see him in action with our boys and hear from people I know who have a clue, but for now, he is making all the right noises for me to feel confident that he will be a success.

After we appointed Bailey, I had mates asking how I felt about him for a long time, and who he really was. I get the feeling that will not be the case this time around, as Neelds reputation preceeds him. Surely the reports that virtually every other club looking for a coach wanted him too has to mean something.

For those who are saying this path has been tried and failed have a close look at some history

Peter Schwab was coach at Hawthorn ( his background was also an assistant) and was sacked in 2004 to be replaced by OMG...an untried premiership assistant coach in Alistair Clarkson

Grant Thomas was a left of centre coaching appointment for StKilda sacked in 2006 to be replaced by OMG...an untried premiership assistant coach in Ross Lyon

Dean Bailey came down the same path as above - if Neeld fails then so be it - but i am tipping if down the track we have success we will rewrite history on Bailey and say that whilst he didnt have any success he stripped the club of 90% of the deadwood and began the rebuild that our success is built on.

I give my full support (and reserve my judgement - be it praise or condemnation) as this decision has been made by smarter and infinitely more well informed people than me.

Good post Nutbean, but I think that the bit in italics is more about being honest about history rather than rewriting it, as that is exactly what Bailey did. I have no doubt that Baileys time was up at the club, but he was appointed as the best coach available at the time to do what was required of him, and that is what he did. When he reached his limit it was time to part ways and look for the next bridge on our path to a premiership. Anyone who says Bailey was an abject failure can't see the woods for the trees.

That's just Caro's little twist on things - not part of his job description to act as mediator- it'll be the board's job to clear his way if need be.

He sounds good on paper, let's hope he can get some good structure and organization into the boys. We need a clear purpose, 22 blokes on the same page.

To anybody who says we have "missed an opportunity", "got another Bailey", please explain what we should have done instead.

To say he will demand any less respect than an 'experienced' coach is a simplistic, baseless argument.

I was a big advocate of Mick Malthouse for our top job but am also thoughtful enough to realise that we would be getting Malthouse and not the Collingwood team - A lot has to go right, not only with your coaching but the drafting and the development of players to acheive ultimate success. We are getting caught up in the Malthouse hype because we are taking a snapshot right now. If you were to draw a line under Malthouse from 2000-2009 , the finals played in ( one extra grand final) resembled our Neale Daniher. Danners seasons were more hot and cold but finals appearance are very similar and how does history judge Danners ?

This is not a knock on Malthouse but more for people to take a reasonable approach to our new appointment rather than suggesting a highly credentialled assistant coach wont have the same success as a Malthouse may have.

Posted (edited)

If that's the case, then we have done awesome and I am fired up!!!!

Totally agree - Neeld and Craig would be absolutely awesome. Craig is one of the very best in the game, and Neeld is clearly ready to take the next step. Every coach rates Craig very, very highly.

If this is true, I am totally stoked.

Someone suggested they had seen Garry Lyon meet with Malthouse at a few different coffee shops in recent weeks. It seems we now know why.

He can't stand Malthouse, dandeeman. Or anything to do with a successful club in Collingwood.

You've got that right HT.

Now that it's happened, I'm very comfortable with Mark Neeld's appointment, and now that he's a Dee you'll never see me ragging him or his coaching style on these boards. As I never ragged Dean Bailey. It might be loyalty - now there's a silly word these dayz. :)
