Mick Malthouse wont be at Collingwood in 2012

Well Sheahan puts it out there, as is his way and his job , but theres no mucking around here, apparently..He's gone.

Its all hush hush of course , so dont you go telling anyone or Eddie will get narky !!

Blind Freddie , let alone Eddie could have told anyone that Mick simply wasnt going to exist in anyones shadow, nor should he. .The whole contrived circumstance of the rise of Sir Bucks and Micks riding off intothe sunset to his other office all came unstuck ironically with success...and likely more success.

Whats that about cant have your cake and eay it too ?..So hes off !

So I wonder where hes going ?:rolleyes::unsure::rolleyes: ..... I wonder :)

If we can't get Malthouse for next year, I'd be happy with Viney as head coach in 2012, then Malthouse in 2013 with a succession plan for one of his assistants to take over from him in a few years from then (Neeld or Watters).

Viney o go back to his original gig in 2013 to ensure we have him at the club for the rest of his career.

I know this is blue sky thinking in the extreme, but I'd be stoked if it came off.

Well Eddie is in his usual 'spin' damage control mode . Nothing's changed for now But really what else is he likely to say. Even he knows the writings on the wall.

Fair enough theyve all got a focus currently on the finals and another tilt at the flag....lucky buggers. Theres a very good reason teres been no announcement of an agreement on a new role for Mick , there simply isnt one. How does he go from Hero to Zero and stay relevant ? He doesnt, not at Collingwood anyway. Mick is very much his own man. He wont like the shackles applied. He'll find fresh fields. Maybe just down the road. Hope he doesnt get too confused finding a carpark next year

I do not think we can have a plan where we wait for Malthouse for 2013. Must be a now or never sceanrio.

I am repeating myself from another post, but if Mick is going to coach someone next year, Edy would not care that it is Melbourne. He would however be vehemently opposed to it being Carlton and would block such a move. As Eddy cant stop Mick in 2013, he is better off letting him go, saving $1m next year and setting up suitable structures behind Buckley (maybe Eade?).

I think for Melbourne to effectively appoint someone for a year is a really backward step. We need to fix a lot of things, one of those things being the culture. We need someone in there who is invested in the long term and the players need to know that too.

So - lets stop mucking about and land this marlin. Get Mick quick.

He doesn't, it's pure speculation.

No real evidence was provided in that article at all.

The idea of waiting until 2013 for MM worries me.

What if, after a year out of the game, Mick decides he is enjoying his life and doesn't need to come back?

He loses his passion, as he realises there's more out there that can satisfy his drive and ambition?

Where does that leave us then?

He was my first choice, but I've really warmed to the idea of Ross Lyon now, however unlikely it may be.

I love that when mike shehan says Tom is going no one believes him but when he is saying malthouse will come, it's "woo party time"

The guy doesn't have a clue

Spot on!

Couldn't agree more Born to Run. That said I also agree with other posters that just because MS says it is so does not make it so. I don't believe him when he says Scully is GONE, so there is no reason for me to believe him (without some actual evidence for once) about MM. That said, if he is correct, it is definitely a now or never scenario.

Never thought he would stay and while it isn't confirmed I believe that he will go.

And if he wants to coach us, great.

But 2012 or never.

The club shouldn't wait for a year, and he shouldn't wait. It may be the difference between him getting a senior job and becoming irrelevant.

100% agree Must become masters of our destiny. We must seek the very best we can...but its going to have to be the very best we can get for 2012 and on.

We cant put ourselves into limbo ( though some may argue its our permanent state anyway ) just to accomodate him or him etc.

Lets make something happen...not try..DO !!

I am sick of this "succession plan" cr@p. Has it worked at Collingwood? All it has done is created unwanted press coverage all year.

Let's worry about getting a decent coach first, then have that coach win us multiple flags (I'm happy for 1, but history shows when we win 1, we win many!). After all that, THEN I might consider who the next coach would be.

At the moment, we got no-one.

Would it at all be possible for MM to play a mentoring role to the Melbourne coaching group, led by Viney next year? MM has stated that you can't be out of footy for too long with the game changing at such a rate.

An announcement of such a strategy at the end of the season will be massive for the club. The momentum will continue to gather strength and the coaching group would be exposed to Mick for a period of time in the lead up to him assuming the head coaching position.

With you absolutley 100% here you are either with us next year or not, This club has to be on the front foot in picking the new coach and moving forward reviewing the list as of final siren round 24.

Personally don't care if we get Mick or Lyon just want someone who has players who give everything for them and defend well in every part of the ground, our young defence is going places just needs the right coach.

I also believe the selection committee will be well informed now from either Malthouse,Lyon or their managers as to whether they are going to coach elsewhere in 2012, so it's just a matter of if it's Yes decide between the 2 but if its no, pick next best available coach, if it's Viney it can't be only for 2012 it has to be for the long haul

Succession planning works very well, it's just an issue when you put a firm date on it and the outgoing coach is reluctant to step aside at that time.

It worked at Sydney, with Roos and Longmire.

It will work at Collingwood too - they just won't be able to prevent Malthouse from going elsewhere.

Agree to not looking ahead too far, but I worry sometimes that Malthouse is getting too long in the tooth and may not be keen on another 7 year stint at a club.

Mick will either be at Collingwood or coaching Melbourne next year. He will not take 1 year off, he can afford to push Collingwood for the a role that he has designed with the knowledge that if they don't agree to his terms he can pack up his desk walk 200m down Swan St and unpack into his new desk. Don't worry about the contract if they can't agree on a role I'm sure the legal eagles can make it null and Void.

Would love to get MM, but its this year or never. The last thing we need is another year in limbo, no more "development" years we need results!

If he sings well and good, we will have to wait until after the finals, if not, sign the best available and let all the members and supporters move on from 2011.

We deserve clarity, the club needs to be bold and proactive, in my 20 odd years supporting it is something that has been lacking, dont let others dictate OUR clubs future no more reactionary decisions time to take control of our own destiny.

proactive NOT reactive, the time is now!

If and still a big If Malthouse comes it will be interesting to see what happens with the list. I don't think Mick will stick by players no matter how good they are the way Danners and Bailey did. Talent is one thing but you must fit in to Micks structure. Someone honest, defensive minded without to many tricks like Warnock could fit in with Micks plans somewhere.

Others to on the list not getting much of a look in could all of a sudden play a big part under Mick, while others who have got regular games may be told conform or there's the door. Will be interesting but it is all speculation till we know who we have

How good would it be, Collingwood lose the GF, all the supporters go over to the after match function, Micky Maltshake grabs the mike, "sorry about today the boys tried their best, I certainly look forward to coaching against you on Queens Birthday, go the dees"

The one big thing that comes from this is it could unsettle the Filth for the finals. God bless democracy and away with capitalism Edward

Its the very professionalism that MM install into his charges ( players and panel) that is the attraction of getting him. Nothing going on wil really have anybearing what soever.to the Filth .

The media want some nibbles and if able , and better, blood. Theyre be none coming. Too slick an outfit. . Come Mad monday (CW's) then all bets are off.

This news is only positive in my opinion.

Regardless of wherever Mick ends up; i get to watch the Collingwood Football Club implode in on itself in its most promising era of recent History.

In saying that, i dont think he'll end up at the Demons; a turn around from October at one club to another club already in Pre-Season is unhealthy to all concerned.

We also cannot wait around a year for Mick Malthouse to come dance with us, we are the prettiest girl at the Blue Light so lets get the most Verile coach...

i feel dirty

Looks like we have our man!

I hope its right and yes it would be good if Todd would do it for next year then MM take over but it might be hard to get Todd to do it.

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,
