Changes for next week

Not many changes to be made after five last week. Bartram should be fit and Blease had another good game for Casey as did Petterd.

I reckon it will be:

In: Bartram

Out: Evans

Evans will be unlucky, no doubt, but Bartram's best 22. He needs to play on Krakouer, or Sidebottom.

Blease will no doubt get a game if Sylvia's thigh doesn't come up, and I'd say he should make his debut within the next few weeks.

Has Petterd paid his dues yet?

Too good a player to be in VFL for too long and always plays well against Collingw@@d

+ 1.

Evans and Nicholson have now had a taste. Done well too and will be back.

Bartram is always one of the first picked each week and is especially important against Collingwood and Petterd is a huge talent just needs a kick up the a$$ to make sure he works harder defensively

Petterd was good today. But he's usually good at VFL level.

Our forward structure looked much better on Friday without him in it. Howe was good overhead, on the ground and applied really good defensive pressure. He's also a much better kick than Petterd.

Given that Petterd putting in decent VFL performances is the norm, then why would we expect a different AFL performance from him after one week in the VFL? Given Howe's debut, and all that he potentially offers the said, Ricky is going to have to be better than just 'good' to get back in.

Petterd went alright against the Pies last year. Should that come into consideration?

Cam Bruce was good too...

In: Bartram (if fit)

Out: Sylvia (if there's a questionmark, if not then Evans or Nicholson)

It's a bloody tough call though, with how well most of the team played.

Nicholson

I thought Nicholson was solid. He has genuine pace and agility. We need that in the team.

Bartram might come back. 50/50 Evans or Jetta. Leaning to keeping Evans.

Tough call this week, a nice change

IN - Bartram (need him for their small forwards, and i think Blair will come in this week for the pies)

OUT - Strauss (stiff but is not defensive minded enough for this weeks opponent)

Evans and Nicholsons run this week will be crucial

based on Sylvia being fit to play

I really don't think anyone should be dropped. They all did well and the only ones who did anything wrong are people like Jurrah who was really poor in the first half. We can't drop him, so that is a moot point. Obviously Bartram is a necessary inclusion, but who do we drop? If Sylvia doesn't come up, then it becomes easy, but they all say he'll be playing, so how can you justify dropping anyone?

No chance. The forward line functioned brilliantly, given the percentage of scores we generated from inside 50s. Petterd, meanwhile, has played one decent VFL game, after three or four shocking AFL games. Still not deserving, and I don't care how well he did against Collingwood last year.

Agreed.

If Sylvia isn't right, Bartram will take his spot. Otherwise, no change. Bennell and Strauss will do the jobs on the small forwards.

Neither Evans nor Nicholson will be dropped until the cattle starts to return (I'm talking Garland, Tapscott, Bail, Jamar etc.).

As much as you don't want to mess with team balance, Petterd was outstanding last year against Magpies. We need our best side on the park if we're going to challenge the Pies (which we definitely have the capability of doing).

That means that Petterd simply has to play. At his best, he is unstoppable.

At the same time, you wouldn't want to drop anyone... Nicholson would probably be the only one you could get away with dropping, and even he had a solid (almost debut) game.

long answer - nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

Unstoppable? He's not Jonathan Brown.

And he's not at his best. One good game for Casey does not wipe out his poor recent AFL form. No deal.

And Bate was outstanding a couple of years ago.

What anyone did last year matters very little. It is the current day players who are in form...

Bartram only missed through injury and should he be fit he will be an automatic in.

This may well be at the expense of a Nicholson and it is not a case of what has Nicholson done wrong, it is that at the moment he is lower in the pecking order than Bartram.

Blease apparently performed well again today and may come in if Sylvia's corkie doesn't come up- having said that we have a 10 day break between games, which should be ample time.

Therefore it should realistically only be one of two options, No Change or Bartram for Nicholson.

Posted

If Bartram is ready, he'll be one of the first picked. Bailey loves him (just not his kicking). One of the rookies would make way you'd think (probably Nicholson).

If Sylvia's out (just our luck), you'd think they'd bring Petterd in before Blease. I have the feeling the FD will take a super conservative approach with Blease. Probably get a game in junk time at the end of the season if we're out of the running for finals.

Playing well against the same team last year should be no indicator for selection this year, sorry Ricky. He was sent back to Casey for a reason. If he has done what he was asked then maybe he will be considered. Maybe Warnock will come in to cover Cloke? Horses for courses approach would seem to be the best approach . All things being equal, there are not too many who didn't warrant another run this week

I think Frawley will take Cloke. He is quick and strong enough, plus he has the ability to hurt him on the rebound. Rivers/MacDonald to take Dawes.

The forward line is the biggest concern. Neither Jurrah, Howe or Watts are really big bodied forwards. They'll need to kick a few between them this week if we are to have a win. I think that they need to keep Green in the forward line now after that performance. Jetta as the defensive forward.

    TRAINING: Wednesday 19th February 2025

I think Kolt looks like he’s im

HARVEY WALLBANGER'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Absent: Salem, Windsor (word is a foot rash going around), Viney, Bowey and Kentfield Train ons: Roy George, no Culley today. MATCH SIM: Friday 7th February 2025

Demonland Trackwatcher Gator ventured down the freeway to bring you his observations from Friday morning's Match Simulation out at Casey Fields. Rehab: Jake Lever and Charlie Spargo running laps.  Lever was running short distances at a fast click as well as having kick to kick with a trainer. He seems unimpeded. Christian Petracca, Kade Chandler, Shane McAdam and Tom Fullarton doing non-contact kicking and handball drills on the adjacent oval.  All moving freely at pace.  I didn’

Tommy Sparrow was here last week in civvies and wearing sunnies. He didn’t train. Today he’s training but he’s wearing goggles so he’s likely got an eye injury. THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
