WELCOME TO THE MELBOURNE FOOTBALL CLUB - JACK VINEY

And Demon Dave you forgot to add - just one gate was open to get in and it was never stated in any pre match info...Poor form Etihad.

Yeah, they've got to run it better.

The games started too late. 4.30PM would have been better, or even 4.00PM. It's too late an evening in Mid Winter.

And the catering is poor.

Wil Hoskin-Elliot was one I have really liked the look of too, but even then, I think he only really stands out because of the lack of quality.

Actually seems almost a shame that we may have to select Jack Viney with our first pick, being a father-son, in one of the strongest drafts in the last decade.

Getting him this year could have been a lot handier.

Time will tell.

Think the penny is finally dropping for you. Well I can live in hope at least. B)

However, sadly everything does not always work out the way YOU want it to.

Jack Viney has been selected to play for the Oakleigh Chargers in tomorrow's TAC Cup Under 18 game against the Dandenong Stingrays.

It's on at Warrawee Park, Oakleigh at 11am.

Please advise us to how he goes. Thanks

I've just left Etihad and just watched Jack Viney play in the opening match. Fair game tonight but still good enough to get into All Australian team based on previous games. At this stage smaller than his old man, built like him though and faster. Good crumber and gee he hits hard. Kicking ok. Missed an easy goal tonight.

Quality of game was appalling and the second game was worse. Wingard didn't play. Rogers,No 12 was SA captain. I left the game and was talking to a couple of Demonlanders at the game and we agreed - weakest championship in many years.

Did you and your fellow Demonlanders see every game or just the one?

Half time and the Stingrays dominance continues although Oakleigh did much better in the second quarter.

Jack Viney is getting plenty of touches now and more importantly, he's getting a lot of the hard ball. He's playing midfield and resting in the forward pocket. His field kicking is good but he has missed two relatively easy shots at goal.

In the first quarter, Jack was interchanged for a fair amount of time and took a while to get settled. He's given away a couple of frees but that's not too much of a worry because he's been penalised going hard for the ball.

The Stingrays are simply much bigger and stronger and their key position players have been marking well. Coach Graeme Yeats has them well drilled and his team is putting the Chargers under a fair bit of pressure. In that context, Jacks game to date is fairly good.

The Oakleigh coach is another ex-Demon Greg Doyle who from memory wore # 26, more lately belonging to John Meesen and Robbie Campbell.

Media Watch: Reporter Jon Anderson from the HUN is here but not Todd Viney (that I can see anyway). No doubt he's in the top end.

Score: Dandenong Stingrays 7.4.46 to Oakleigh Chargers 2.6.18.

I'll hang around for the first 15 minutes of the third and then I'm off to pick up my grandson to watch a game of Amateur C grade footy which, for the footy purist is the best footy to watch these days.

I saw Todd in Darwin yesterday.

Stayed for another 10-15 minutes and Jack was getting better as the game went on. Oakleigh had reduced the lead a little by the time I left but the Rays looked the goods.

Just before I left, Jack took a great grab and centered it to FF for a nice mark and goal to the Chargers.

I believe this was his first game for Oakleigh and given he's a year younger than most, I'm happy.

I'm happy that he is playing with/against bigger stronger boys. Look what it did for Tappy.

Ok, so you're saying...

GWS should trade one of the picks to us, cheaper than what the other teams may offer, because they would be making the assumption we'd use the pick on Viney, who they can't get anyway.

Thereby not reducing the prospective pool to choose from in the 2012 draft.

If that's right, then ok, I do get it now.

But that's based on the assumption we'd use the pick on Viney.

Personally I'd much rather we bluff them to get a pick, then not use it on Viney.

Use it on another kid like O'Meara, because we'll still be able to take Viney F/S the following year, and both Viney and another 17 year old kid are likely to be more valuable than either of those 1st round picks (here I've made the assumption we'd trade our 1st round pick in 2011 to get the under-age pick).

Given that it looks like a very thin draft this year, and a good one the year after wouldn't we be better off to draft Viney this year with our top pick and use our top pick the following year to draft a better player than we might get next year. The only problem with that is that if we say make top 4 (unlikely IMO) and day 9th this year then we would be in a relatively lower position in 2012, but in a draft not as compromised by GWS as this one will be.

Personally, I think the sooner we get JV into our system the better for all concerned, and let the chips fall where they may the following year.

Yep. agree with you. We should be trading out of this draft

AT 178cm and 77kgs I think it is fair to say he will not be a wrecking ball at AFL level for quite some time. The good news is you cannot train draftees to have guts, heart and testicular fortitude. Jack has it!!

The apple hasn't fallen far from the tree.

    BOILED LOLLIES by The Oracle

In the space of a month Melbourne has gone from chocolates to boiled lollies in terms of its standing as a candidate for the AFL premiership.  The club faces its moment of truth against a badly bruised up Collingwood at the MCG. A win will give it some respite but even then, it won’t be regarded particularly well being against an opponent carrying the burden of an injured playing list. A loss would be a disaster. The Demons have gone from a six/two win/loss ratio and a strong percentag

CLEAN HANDS by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons headed into town and up Sydney Road to take on the lowly Coburg Lions who have been perennial VFL easy beats and sitting on one win for the season. Last year, Casey beat them in a practice match when resting their AFL listed players. That’s how bad they were. Nobody respected them on Saturday and clearly not the Demons who came to the game with 22 players (ten MFC), but whether they came out to play is another matter because for the most part, their intensity was lacking an

    ALAS SPRINGS by Whispering Jack

I got the word on Saturday from someone who knows someone inside the Fremantle camp that the Dockers were pumped and supremely confident about getting the W the next day against Melbourne at TIO Traeger Park in the red heart of the country. I was informed that the Dockers were extremely confident for a number of reasons. They had beaten the Demons on their home territory at the MCG at their last two meetings so they didn’t see beating them at Alice Springs as a problem. They belie
