not to mention his body completely letting him down

was supposed to be an elite player right about now

His injuries have been unfortunate. At the end of 2006 he had the promise of being something special but plateaud and fell back. His lack of pace was always going to cap his potential.

having said that, his colleague Mr.Sylvia is nearly just that

let's hope the next batch of 'sure things' turn out like CS and not BM

At best Sylvia has been a "teaser" without having a sustained break out year. He is nowhere near elite at this point.

But his time is now and he needs to produce it.

I dont think injury issues have anything to do with his naive attempts at leadership.

All the guy had going for him in that dept was that he was at one time the most promising young player on our list, and that he was at times outspoken.

McLean was naive at times and I dont think he had the mettle to be a true leader.

However, his inability to get on the track consistently certainly dimmed his star and performance at MFC.

So if that was the case, the identity of the captain was known weeks or even months ago, but the club decided to keep it all a secret until today, just for effect.

That makes sense. What could possibly be achieved by withholding the decision?

Think about it...

The players would want to know too, and for practical reasons.

It's not just about releasing the info to the public.

For the captain to have been decided upon, they'd need to have already voted.

What possible justification could be used for holding off the decision so long after the vote?

And if the players knew, do you really think it would remain secret for that length of time?

Totally agree! Can not see any benefit in having delayed this for so long and the long period of speculation will have been a distraction for the contenders! Sooner Brad or Aaron announced the better!! So Finally lets get on with it now!!! :)

Green.

Apparently announced to playing group at training this morning.

On Demonland someone who was at the training said there was a lot of handshaking going on and it was considered by weight of numbers that Davey had the captaincy (that is, there seemed to be more shaking of Davey's hand than of Green's) - so it at least looks like Green and Davey are getting the nod, but who is Capt and who is VC is not yet clear.

I was at training today and was told the captaincy would be announced at 1.00pm.

I feel a bit for Davey and would have loved to have seen him get the job, but with Bruce gone Green is the most experienced by far of the leadership group in terms of games played and is a proven performer and leader. Congratulations Brad, hope he can bring us some more great finals performances like the 2000 qualifying final in the not too distant future.

Congratulations to Greeny, well earnt in my opinion.

I like what they've done with the official website too, with Green a standalone graphic on the left hand side, and his three vice captains on the other,

albeit with some dodgy masking on the Davey image!

As has been noted several times it is very difficult to judge leadership unless you are part of the group, but this all feels right to me. I like Green as captain, he has been around a long time as a loyal demon and has developed into a consistent and courageous player. Davey, Moloney and Rivers each bring something different. I love the two youngsters Grimes and Jones being in the leadership group.

Congratulations to Greeny, his three vice-captains and the two younger members of the leadership group. I really like the concept of three deputies, given where we are at with our young list. Congratulations also to our footy club for the way the announcement was made public. Not the standard press conference for us, but Bails announcing the decisions to the entire playing group. Just brilliant!

From the comments Bails has made on the announcement page, it'll be interesting to see how our forward line shapes up this year, as he has implied that Davey would be located in the forward line (at least, that's the way I read it.....)

Predictable, but unlike in the past with predictable decisions this is an excellent choice. I think it speaks volumes of where we've come that i reckon each one of the guys short-listed i feel would've been good choices, however Green has earned this appointment after a great 2010 showing courage and leadership, and of course kicking goals!

Congratulations Greeny, I can't wait to see you lead the boys out onto the G for the first time!

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
