Jay Clark reporting that Isaac Smith is still up for grabs. Probably can’t add much more to this thread, but can’t believe we’re not having a serious look at him.

I get the knock on his age, but he just oozes class and was last year a potential captain of the club. Just what we need - good kick, still quick, leadership and wont be coming at a premium price.

Started a bit later than most. He was drafted at 22 years old, I believe. Think he may have another 1 maybe 2 decent years left. I'd be for it at the right price. Think Clarko would want more than we should offer.

Fair point, really depends where the club thinks its truely at in terms of contending again.

We are in the Premiership window. Discount this year! Yes from me.

Played a great game in the VFL Grand Final and showed some dangerous pace. Worth a look in at least in the rookie draft.

You’d make a good recruiter.

9 years later and the blokes an absolute gun.

Yes please if we can get home for a 3rd rounder.

Isaac would be great for us. Reads the game well, pace, good mark and kick, experience and leadership and sets up a lot of plays on the spread.

But his interests are elsewhere. There may be an offer from the Dees but there will be no acceptance.

Apparently Hawks wanting a pick before 25. Seems pricey for a bloke who turns 31 this year, as much as I like him.

Not sure if it will be related to it, but Hawthorn are going to ask for special permission to trade their first round pick this year too. (according to Gerard Whateley).

Watch this AFL give special permission - we wouldn't want the Hawks or Cats to go backwards anytime soon.

Given his late pick (age 22) he is a young 31.

It's not a guarantee though that he's got more time in him. I just think within the context of our year and list situation it would be unwise to use such a high pick on such an old player. If we had made finals this year it would be another story.

Like the idea.  Langdon and Smith on both wings seems like a big improvement to me.

Our overweight mid stocks need outside  balance and incentive to get the ball wide to players in space instead of so many clustering on the inner rim and attracting more tackles / heat and subsequently more turnovers.

Getting the inside / outside balance right and giving incentives to the likes of Clarry & Viney to look outside as their first option and training/drilling this into them.

Going to be a hard habit to break but to fix our woes with some of these insane inside hand balls, sometimes to a phantom player that isn't there or straight to the opp, this is a must fix for Goody & the FD if we are to become a regular winning unit.

What are we going to have to give to get though?

Smith & Langdon could be an awesome circuit breaker that sees us go from a reasonable bounce back in 2020 to a potential finals contender again.

We certainly don't want another rediculous 'overs for Lever' situation but would also not want to miss out if it means throwing in a steak knife or two.

Clarko just might be willing to barter a little more kindly also, given the Lewis legacy, the compliments Lewis gave the club and the way we went out of our way to involve the Hawks in his final pressor/send off.

For our 3rd or 4th rounder, 2 year deal on a 400k-500k with an option for a third if certain performance triggers are hit.

I reckon we should explore the possibility for sure.

You watch us dumb arses give pic 20. Put ur house on it.

Its the melb way!!!!

I’m hearing whispers that GC will use an early pick on Smith, somewhere around 17-19. Doesn’t this mean they’ll get two PP’s?#Ihearwhispers #ETthetradebreaker.

MFC future 2nd round pick?

If Hawthorn need cap space and Smith wants to stay in Melbourne I reckon a 3rd round pick would get it done.

Possibly. If they are after Patton, Martin or others they may need some cap space. Hawks always seem to pull off these ridiculous deals.

But they also have a departing raft which might include Roughy, Poppy, Birchall and Schoey.

3rd rounder would be lovely, thank you!

That’s the only way Clarko would consider it. Think he was around pick 19

Would love a guy like smith on a two year incentive based deal.  But can someone catch me up on why Hawthorn would be looking to trade him?

My mail is that it is not so much that the Hawks want to trade Isaac but more the case that Isaac wants a change that will maximize his remuneration for the remainder of his career.

The implication is that in the past Isaac has accepted less favourable terms to stay at the Hawks.

Added to that is the rumour that the relationship between player and Clarkson is not strong at best. .

If he had any interest in us, or vice versa, it would probably end up being a relatively similar deal to the one that got us Jordan Lewis.

i can't see him wanting to pack up his family and head off to GC. Every chance he'd be keen on the dees i reckon. And we could pay him pretty well.

  • REPORT: West Coast

On a night of counting, Melbourne captain Max Gawn made sure that his contribution counted. He was at his best and superb in the the ruck from the very start of the election night game against the West Coast Eagles at Optus Stadium, but after watching his dominance of the first quarter and a half of the clash evaporate into nothing as the Eagles booted four goals in the last ten minutes of the opening half, he turned the game on its head, with a ruckman’s masterclass in the second half.  No superlatives would be sufficient to describe the enormity of the skipper’s performance starting with his 47 hit outs, a career-high 35 possessions (22 of them contested), nine clearances, 12 score involvements and, after messing up an attempt or two, finally capping off one of the greatest rucking performances of all time, with a goal of own in the final quarter not long after he delivered a right angled pass into the arms of Daniel Turner who also goaled from a pocket (will we ever know if the pass is what was intended). That was enough to overturn a 12 point deficit after the Eagles scored the first goal of the second half into a 29 point lead at the last break and a winning final quarter (at last) for the Demons who decided not to rest their champion ruckman at the end this time around.
