Top 5 things we want to see happen in 2011

Recommended Posts

1) To make finals on our terms and not rely on other teams to get us in

2) To start winning interstate

3) For Grimes to play a full season and dominate in the backline

4)For Jack Watts to have a great year so people stop bagging him

5) To beat teams we should beat and not accept constolation losses. Still cant work out how we lost to the eagles at the G. We should have beaten the pies twice.

1. Win interstate. We have never had this apect to our game. EVER. Bailey needs to change this.

2. Play strong accountable footy. not just the front running style. We want a Hawthorn model, not Carlton. I will spew if we do another sensational game like against the swans then lose to Port over there when they are just average.

3. Develop this midfield. at present it shows promise but we need to go from promising to winning the contested ball. Still getting smashed in some games at the clearances.

4. Develop a second ruckman to assist Jamar.

5. Recruit minimum 3 young talls and develop them at Casey. biggest bang for our buck will still be through the draft.

1) To make the Top8

2) To start building bigger bodies.

3) To have recruited an Elite Key Defender & 2ndly a Tall Key Forward.

4) I'd like to see Maric & Cheney take the next step up & for Martin to come back next season refreshed & Rarin to go.

5) To start to instill some aggression into the side & not take crap.

I know this isnt the post for this but Ive been wondering this for a while

Key Defenders - Isnt Garland going to be (if not already) another key defender with Frawley, Rivers and Warnock why are we finding a 4th?

Tall Key Forward - Are we talking 195+?? Watts (196), Jurrah (190), Pettard (185), Dunn (192) (has come along way) are not that short. Morton and Bate (192) are there as well. Plus you have to consider Fitzpatrick (200). Im not sure why we need another tall key forward.

Sure its nice to have depth but shouldnt we look at the best players availible in the draft and develop the ones we have instead of trying to find yet another position in a crammed 22??

1 - Sam Blease to happen! This kid will win the Rising Star in 2011. A good year for him this year, in that he was able to return to football, a few issues along the way but he should be behind all these problems for the start of 2011 and watch him go.

2 - Jack Grimes & Rick P - to put injury concerns behind them. An overall improvement in injuries across the board.

3 - A win at AAMI. Or, simply not being scheduled there for the next 10 years, can we just hide from the place?

4 - Jack Watts - to continue to be discussed more than any other player - because he is tearing it apart (as opposed to the dribble that goes on now). Please Jack, either be great or average and be done with you!

5 - The Colombian mother from Modern Family, Gloria (Sofia Vergara) to succeed Pia Miller

In the required order...

1. Fit & healthy list - our injury list was again longer than most for the majority of 2010

2. Our 18-22 age bracket to continue accruing games together, develop a core best 25 and game plans B & C

3. Significantly less turnovers

4. Win at least 50% of our games - the 50% win / loss ratio to apply interstate as well

5. Jimmy Stynes leading us to another successful year off field and enjoying our first finals appearance since 2006

And as far as individual players go, I'd love to see either Jack Fitzpatrick or Stef Martin stay fit and have a regular impact as a second ruckman / forward and I salivate at the thought of Grimesy in the midfield every week.

Oh and a Jurrah 10 goal game :)

No. No, I'm not.

Frawley & Garland, yes,,, IMO we need to have replacements for both Warnock & Rivers to take over within 2 years from now.

This I think needs to be of haste to get games into them, unless we recruit someone talented in.

1. Sam Blease to get a game

2. Luke Tapscott to get a game

3. Grimes, Petterd, Wonaeamirri and Jurrah to have injury-free years

4. Something that resembles a half-decent performance at AAMI Stadium

5. Finals footy

2) To start winning interstate

1. Win interstate. We have never had this apect to our game. EVER. Bailey needs to change this.

The Darwin and Brisbane wins don't count?

It's more of an AAMI thing than anything. Our last few games in Perth have been OK (vs Freo this year and West Coast last year).

1- Win 12 games and I don't care where or how

2- Jack Watts to have a big year and prove I know nothing

3- Dunn to continue on from where he finished this year

4- LJ to play the whole year

5- Fitzpatrick to play 4 games at AFL level.

Warnocks best days are behind him.

Rivers and Garland's history of injury will always be in the back of everybody's mind.

Plus, hopefully Garland will have a full preseason and be at peak fitness- he may be used up forward a lot more.

Hopefully the likes of Jack fitzpatrick will follow Scully's examples he sets over summer and fasttracks his development somewhat- i'd certainly like to see him given a shot or two in the forward line during the pre-season comp and maybay an early home and away game or two!

Another key backman just starting to find his way in his 3rd season in 2013 is extactly what we will need- there should be a good number of options available at pick 12- unless there is a KPF who for whatever reason slides to us at 12 and is the best player available then obviously we take him.

Who knows, maybe we show MacNamara a little faith and he finally comes good.

other than that happening, we should go defense first this draft.

1. Finals with MFC participation

2. To have more inside 50's than our opposition over the year (ranked 14th this year)*

3. Make better use of the Russian's domination of the hit-outs

4. Turn up to play at AAMI and Subiaco

5. To see more than 2 games live (personal goal only)

*Interestingly enough, MFC are ranked 1st for 1%ers (but also have the most 1%ers against) and rebound 50's for 2010.

1. That Jimmy makes it.

2. To learn to play well under pressure, including the pressure of expectation when we meet teams weaker than us.

3. A better run with injuries. Must be about our turn.

4. Continual growth in membership.

5. No more Jack Watts threads

6. Tapscott and Blease!! sorry, I got greedy.

1. Win more games than we lose

2. Win interstate regularly

3. Play Finals (because this is predicated by numbers 1 and 2)

4. Grimes to play a full season (along with Blease, Petterd, Davey and others)

5. Watts, Scully, Trengove, Gysberts, Tapscott, Blease, Fitzpatrick, Gawn to continue improving and play together.

1. Jimmy to get the all clear. Anything else pales.

2.

3.

4. Senior players (Davey, Green, Bruce) to relish the beginning of their sunset years with domination on the field and strong leadership of the growing band of younger brothers. They deserve some payback for their efforts and loyalty during the harder times.

5. Anyone who is touted as having potential either at Casey or in the Ones to turn more (or even some?) of that potential into actual. Time to stop the wheelspin and start getting some grip, week by week, player by player.

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

    WELCOME 2024 by Meggs

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. The Matildas have been playing to record sell-out crowds across Australia and ‘Mary Fowler is God’ is chalked onto footpaths everywhere. WNBA basketball rookie sensation Caitlin Clark has almost single-handedly elevated her Indiana Fever team to unprecedented viewership, attendances and playoffs in the USA.   Our female Aussie Paris 2024 Olympians won 13 out of Australia’s all-time record 18 gol

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
