What are you views on Cheney at the moment. Seems to be one of the least talked about from the under 20 group.

Has he impressed you so far?

Is he part of our future?

From what I've seen so far his contested marking is fantastic for his size and has a pretty good defensive side about him. Just seems to lack a bit of polish for AFL level at the moment.

I think he has been very impressive, and absolutely he is part of the future. He will turn into the defensive small backman which will release Bennell to be the offensive small defender, so in other words will take Whelans position

I do like Cheney. However, he's not the quickest guy going around and thus I'm concerned about where he fits in.

I'm not sure he's quick enough to play on the pacey smalls that many sides have, and if he doesn't play that role I'm not sure he'll be able to cement a role in the backline.

I thought Cheney's lack of pace stood out on Friday night against some nippy forwards from Essendon. Agree with your thoughts.

I think he has been fantastic, great run, great mark even under pressure, and seems composed for some one so young.

and hard at it which is lacking

I think you're right, but thats against the fastest team in the comp.

He's harder than any of our other young blokes and we need that aspect in our young developing group.

He will never develop into a superstar, but his spot is definitely secure. Could easily become our version of Campbell Brown.

Can't disagree with that anymore.

I think his defensive efforts really lack... He's shown he uses the ball okay, and can get plenty of it, but for a defender he's not accountable enough... That's why he's been in and out of the side, I have no doubt.

He's had some bags kicked on him this year, Lockyer gave him a bath in round 2. Really needs to work on this aspect of his game...

Cheney, along with Jetta, excite me least of any of our young players.

The basic reason is that they do not have any standout qualities (not great pace, not great skills, not great marking, and not great footy brain to compensate for the lack in other areas).

This leads me to think they will only even be pretty good/ average players.... this is the type of player MFC had always attracted and it is this type of mediocre player that have characterised the MFC teams over the past 10 yrs.

On the other hands, our other youngsters have some absolute ELITE attributes

Won't be part of our long term future

Get a clue.

The guy puts his head in the hole and his body on the line. This is more that can be said for half the prima donna’s that ran around on Friday night.

Successful football teams need gutsy, reliable, accountable backman with good skills, he is one of them.

He has only played a handful of games and he shown a great deal of improvement.

He is part of the future.

I disagree. I think He's an old school footballer. Not quick, not flash skills but gutsy. I've got nothing against him but the game requires you to be quick with good skills therefore i don't think he'll make it. It's just an opinion but the right one. In Daniher's days it was these type of players that constantlt held us back, we can't go there again.

give him some time, he looks a natural footballer. everyone gets too excited by athletes.

I don't think he is slow but he isn't express. Certainly worth playing out the year as his rate of improvement is great at the moment. He looks a cool head and is tough as nails. Something we sadly lack at the Dees at present.

i wonder if he could be used in the midfield. i know he isnt polished but wish his bullocking work. he might be a good clearance player

Nothing special, but is good on the lead (less so in the air).

We need small defenders, and even if he isn't the creative type, if he can shut down an opponent then his place in the team is secure (for now at least).

Not every player in your side is going to be a star, and your lesser lights are equally as important if they can do a job consistently.

I like that Cheney is hard at it, and his marking skills are pretty good for someone his size. Kicking is passable.

Good replacement for Wheels, and a good return for our investment.

It's hard to do that these days if you're not quick, since most of the opponents we'd want a shut-down small defender on are quick.

If he's not creative, as you suggest, and he's not quick enough to play on the pacey smalls, it puts him in a difficult position.

He's a great mark, loves the contested work, seems to put his body on the line when required, and runs all day. Good qualities.

He is let down by his disposal at times, but overall I think he will make a more than adequate replacement for Whelan. Should keep his spot in the team too whilst we continue down the youth road.

Most of the guys we'd want a shut-down small defender on are quite quick.

Cheney isn't slow, he is no Bennell, but his speed is adequate.

We will always have Garland and Frawley as an option for the super quick smaller guys anyway.

And with experience, Cheney can learn to play in front, which is his big strength.

Adequate for who?

If he's not a creative defender you want him to be your #1 small, and IMO for that he needs to be quick.

He's played only a handful of games and has started as well as any small backman at the Dees since Wheels.

Smart, strong, neat kick.

I just don't see what you're seeing.

More like Walsh than Wheels and I'm not convinced there's room in our backline for him. Time will tell

My question is, at the end of his career will he be rated as a better or worse player than Peter Walsh?

very interesting question. i think he is stronger in the air than walsh, but i think they'll be similar players.

Nothing special, but is good on the lead (less so in the air).

disagree here jaded, i really think one of cheneys strongest points is his strength when the ball is above his head.

from his first handful of games i would suggest that he could quite easily be a a solid second tier player for the next 10 years, who does his job quietly, no fanfare, rarely gets smashed, but who is never your best and won't really win games for you. could play in a premiership side, but will not be the one to win the flag for you, unless it is a body on the line last minute type situation. won't win it off his boot, but could contribute.

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
