Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

A second year player who has played in only 4 wins and is as thin as a stick isn't playing well after playing 90% of matches over the past 2 seasons? OMG! Sack him!

Morton is one of the major disappointments of this year for mine. I guess I was expecting him to really develop and no longer be afraid of the contest.

Have a look at Mitch Robinson at Carlton. He's a pretty skinny lad, but he never shirks a contest. I don't know what it is with Morton, but it frustrates me that he seems so weak and so unwilling to get the contested ball or take a contested mark.

I'd rather not look at Robinson. He is a gutless thug for belting Rohan Bail behind play at Casey.

He's 19.5 years old. He's 194cm. Why is he skinny? Because he is still a lanky teenager.

His average of 24 disposals are up 25% on last year, in a team which is no better than last year right now.

He's not mean't to be an in and under player at his size, and he's too light to muscle inside. I would not consider him soft at this stage of his career.

Imagine what he will be like when he's 22-23 years old. At this age he will have played over 100 games. More muscle and beef on him. His opponents better be quick if they want to keep up with him.

yes he has a rake..but still a thick rake when compared to morton

give me their BMIs at the start of their careers - I repeat - you just don't know

at the start of the 2006 season Mitch was listed as 184cm and 77 kg = 2.39

at the start of the 2009 season Cale was listed as 192cm and 83 kg = 2.31

i.e. at the same age (because Mitch is almost exactly 3 years older) they were very similar builds, in fact Cale was relatively heavier

Some players are naturally more courageous than others, but improving this aspect of one's game is possible, especially with more confidence. More confidence will come with a stronger frame.

Like Brad Green

Someone needs to tell Cale that putting his body on the line may hurt for a minute or two, but pulling out of a contest will hurt for a lifetime. It will be hard to get any real confidence in his game if he does those sort of acts. Once he backs into a pack and takes one for the team every player needs to go give him a pat on the back (in fact every player should get this sort of treatment)

He will learn.

why did u do Cale mortons weight after he'd done some pre-seasons. when we drafted him he was 192cm, 75kg. And don't forget he has grown 2cm apparently

Mitch morton when drafted he was 184cm 74kg. so he was mucccccch more stocky

So Cale has put on 8kg in a year? Awesome! He puts weight on much more easily than Mitch, looking at that. Plus, if he's still growing, he hasn't even begun to fill out yet. He'll be a monster!!!!!!!!

But I guess, as old55 keeps saying, you just don't know what will happen.

At least it's not my foot you're hitting, eh Freak?

Of course it does. One of the toughest players I've seen, Michael Voss, put in a short step when Robert Walls was coach. He was very young and quickly told he wouldn't get a game unless he 'went' when it was his turn.

Some players are naturally more courageous than others, but improving this aspect of one's game is possible, especially with more confidence. I don't know what body Morton will end up with, but I'm certain that he'll get stronger and with this more confidence. That said, he needs to.

It's usually a players third year that they really start to improve.

Good post,

I've heard that Voss story too. Only difference being that a young Voss already had more of an appetite for contested ball than Cale does. And more of a natural nous for it.

The shirking he did on Friday night, although ugly and not acceptable will hopefully leave his game as he gets stronger and more confident. Its possible to be brave and still not be a great winner of contested situations or have a playing stlye that even gets into those situations.

That's why his desire for contested possessions that is more of a concern. Currently he seems uninterested in playing a style of football that sees him in contests at all. I hope you're right about the 3rd year development, as his bow is a little under strung without being able to force and win contests. This can also come as he matures, but he is coming from a long way back in this regard, especially compared with a young Voss.

He'll be good either way, but if he is to turn into a match turning star we desperately crave he needs to develop his ability to make and win contested situations.

I cannot believe some of this crap.

Cale Morton gets uncontested disposal because he runs runs and runs. His engine is huge. People on here seem to think its easy to get an uncontested disposal but its not. He runs hard and creates his own space.

That's not the issue people have with him. We know he runs all day we just want to see him run at packs when it's required

Well if you read through people do have a problem with this.

You dont get to AFL level if your a soft player. Give him time and people will eat their words.

hopefully he learns to use his height in marking contests. i would rather see him be able to take strong marks than get his own ball under packs...

Morton can take a grab. Good hands on the kid. He'll drift forward in his career and have an impact. It's just a question of how much. Can he be a match winner? On a regular basis? Perhaps if he went there while other talls took a breather?

What has gone wrong with Cale Morton, he was flying not long ago and he has seemed to have stalled. He shirked a couple of contests on friday night most notably a marking contest (which the commentators made reference to) I think it was either the second or third quarter. I don't think he is a "shirker" but more he is lacking in confidence. Maybe a spell in the 2's?

Morton plays "frightened". Has done from his first game; nothing to do with his size or weight or ....

Its part of him, his make up, genetic if you like. It won't change, its inherent.

Oh, OK then.

Didn't know...

He's got the Frightened Footballer gene in his DNA...

Maybe a plasma transfusion will do it...

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n

    TRAINING: Monday 29th April 2024

Demonland Trackwatcher Kev Martin was on hand at Gosch's Paddock for Monday's training session and made the following observations. About 38 to 40  players down at training.  BBB walking laps.  Charlie Spargo still in rehab, doing short run throughs.  Christian Salem has full kit on and doing individual work with a trainer. He is is starting to get into some sprints. I cannot see Andy Moniz-Wakefield out there. Jack Viney and Kade Chandler have broken away from the

    DISCO INFERNO by Whispering Jack

Two weeks ago, when the curtain came down on Melbourne’s game against the Brisbane Lions, the team trudged off the MCG looking tired and despondent at the end of a tough run of games played in quick succession. In the days that followed, the fans wanted answers about their team’s lamentable performance that night and foremost among their concerns was whether the loss was a one off result of fatigue or was it due to other factor(s) of far greater consequence.  As it turns out, the answer to

TIGERS PUNT CASEY by KC from Casey

The afternoon atmosphere at the Swinburne Centre was somewhat surreal as the game between Richmond VFL and the Casey Demons unfolded on what was really a normal work day for most Melburnians. The Yarra Park precinct marched to the rhythm of city life, the trains rolled by, pedestrians walked by with their dogs and the traffic on Punt Road and Brunton Avenue swirled past while inside the arena, a football battle ensued. And what a battle it was? The Tigers came in with a record of two wins f
