Our Next Captain

I am a huge fan of Junior, and unlike many on this forum I think his form this year (except v West Coast) has been quite good. However, it is clear he is coming to the end of his career with his last season to be 2009 or 2010. This being the case it seems likely that there will be a new captain for the 2010 season and definitely for the 2011 season.

So who should it be?

I strongly feel Brad Green should lead our club. He is one of two established class players (the other being Davey). He is skillful, clean, tuff, always goes hard and has delived through both good times and bad.

I feel Davey should be his deputy.

I can't believe Brad Green was not made captain this year. I am of the belief captains should be imposing, fearless and game changing players able to lift their team through action. Brad Green possess all these qualities.

Late last year I'd have said Miller or Green, however so long as he can keep on the park, my vote's gone towards Brent Moloney. His game has gone to another level this year, and off the field he ticks all the boxes for mine.

Brent Moloney has to be your next captain bleeds the red and blue, and sets a great example to the younger players who come to the club, i think green missed his chance when macca got it.

I think Junior will retire at year end. Therefore we need a new Captain for 2010.

I would go for Brad Green but Brett Moloney and Brad Miller would in the leadership group for mine.

Will almost certainly happen. As great a player he has been for the club, you can see he is past it. But it was great for the club to recognise his efforts over his career by making him captain this season. A player well worth the honour.

As for next captain, it will be Brad Green with Moloney and Miller as probable vice and deputy vice. Davey would also be a certainty for a role in the leadership group.

I was keen on Brock in the off season, I still think he's a chance. But as the season progresses I see Brent Moloney, Brad Green and even from left field Aaron Davey as possible candidates for the Captaincy.

had the joy of having him on our table friday night in perth and i was so impressed. he was asked if he was disappointed to be traded at first and he said yes until he found out it was melbourne. loveds the club. speaking to the young guys, he's the one they look upto and he's the one who gets them going. at 26 he's the perfect age. the fact he hardly played last year and the team put him in the leadership group speaks volumes.

He's a lifelong melbourne fan, bleeds for the club, leads by example.... give him 4 years then he can pass it onto a young kid like watts.

At this stage Greeny should be our captain, but yes Moloney is certainly putting his hand up & if he stays on the Park & continues in this form he would be a very worthy Captain.

I love Macca, but his skills let him down too often to be captain for the long term (yes, I know he may even retire after this year). The man that leads the team consistently every week is 'Flash' Davey. He does the chasing, the smothering and 90%, if not more, of his disposals are effective. He is now playing almost the Luke Hodge quarterback role, except running around by himself. He leads from the front and should be rewarded. Okay, so last year wasn't his best season, but he's not alone there.

I suppose my second vote would be for Greeny. That said, on this seasons performance, Aaron's so far ahead it's not funny (even though Greeny has been injured).

I was tossing up between Moloney and Miller, and chose Miller. Moloney shows great on-field leadership, and Miller can at times, but I think Miller would do a better job of the off-field stuff. I wouldn't have any problem with Moloney being captain though.

What's sad is that 2 years ago this thread would have been pointless because the vast majority of us would have said McLean. Now, he's currently got 5.26% of the vote.

The thing about Miller is his kicking. I certainly can't fault him this week, as he kicked beautifully, but he's too on and off and too many of those pack marks go through his hands. Don't get me wrong, I like Millsy and I think he's a great trier and is always a tough-nut, but like Macca, his skills let him down too often. That was generally the beauty of Neita. When we needed a captains goal he would deliver, I don't think I could say the same for Millsy. That said, bring Watts in and stick up at Full Forward and push Millsy out and I could easily see him play the role he played across half forward in the latter Daniher years. But as a captain, I don't think so. As a leader, I'm all for him, but as the main man, I'm not so sure.

On the McLean thing, I agree, it is sad. At the end of 2004 we were all talking him up, now his lack of pace around the ground and generally his disposal efficiency lets him down. Did you see at one stage on the weekend he had the ball three times within a minute and all three were ineffective disposals? That said, he's still a ball magnet (like Jonesy), all we need to do is stick a bit of pace around him (ala a Chris Judd or a Tom Scully- potential #1 pick this year) and all of a sudden he could be a superstar. Much like Sam Mitchell. The latter's not quick, but he is still one of the leagues premier midfielders (and always kills us). However, Mitchell (unlike perhaps Brock) is a good decision maker. I digress...

Its amazing what 18 months can do for someone in footy. 18 months ago there would have been one name and one name only on that poll....Brock Mclean. i would be very curious to know why people have gone off him? For me its his lack of leaving his mark on a game, he is not a game turner or winner, early on he was but i think he has just lost a bit of his pace and his skills are not where they need to be

I can't choose between three or four guys.

Aaron Davey has sstepped up on and off - and he's never been weak at either. Would he be the first indigenous captain of an AFL club? He'd be a fair choice and it would be great to see how he'd respond. He certainly does the team lifting things on the field - the run down tackles, great runs, fantastic goals. But then he also does the low-screw-up things.

And he's an honest and hardworking, friendly to fans kind of guy off the field.

Personally, I dont really want another interim captain. Green doesn't really have that long left in him as a player, so as good as he would be, I think it would just be 'filling' the void until a long term captain like Netiz comes up again. I still cant believe that Green wasnt the captain this year.

With no disrespect to Junior what so ever, but will people really look back in 10 - 15 years time and remember him?

So, therefore, it should ABSOLUTELY be Brad Miller for Captain and Green and Flash for VC. That for me, is the best combination to 'Bring back the Demon'

oops, I voted for the wrong Brad.

I meant to vote for Miller, I think he's becoming a real leader now & while I'm pleased with Greens improvement at getting in & under for the hardball I still think Miller is a harder worker & more respected through the AFL community.
