That's gonna be tricky... How long is their contract for?

5 years, with additional 5 year option I heard on SEN.

In an economic struggle like this, it's interesting the national airline of the UAE (thanks google) has sponsored a football ground in Melbourne!

Do you think it has something to do with the Socceroos playing in Asia now? (i.e. those teams playing here?)

I also noticed in the draw on the hun website that it still said TD :P

My friends and I are already referring to it as "Jihad" stadium. Apparently in some parts of Southern Cross Station (lifts etc) there are still references to "Colonial Stadium" to this day...

no, the naming rights to the ground start in march, corresponding with their debut flight to australia. spend money make money, we all know they are coming now. in the past anglicised aussies may have looked at it as a foreign airline based on the spelling and the country of origin. getting the name into the vernacular of common people is a great marketing move imo.

Look I know its a UAE airline and not Saudi, but glossing over that geographic inconvenience how about we just call it the Kaaba Dome?

Good one, it'll be a case of the G or the Jihad.

Also, couldn't help raise a chuckle about the fact that the AFL and Ian Collins are having a bit of a stoush about fees on beverage sales at the Jihad. I wonder if the sponsors approve of the consumption of all that alcohol on the premises?

I doubt it. I'm sure they serve alcohol on their planes, so there'd be no problem.

Emirates airlines from Dubai.

Etihad Airlines from Abu Dhabi.

Both from UAE. Both competing for sponsorship opportunities and flight way-point stops from around the world.

And you thought state vs state competition was an issue in Australia!

Frankly, I'm glad we didn't get them as sponsor. UAE might not be run by raving fundi dictators like Saudi Arabia and Iran, but I dunno if I'd feel comfortable getting sponsorship from a state owned corporation in a country that imports child slaves.

And their migrant labour laws (more than half the population) would make Jeff Kennett seem like a militant unionist.

Yeah, but they have oil, so it's okay.

I wonder what will happen when Collingwood is meant to play there, what with Emirates being their major sponsor and Etihad, their rival, being the naming rights sponsor of the ground. I wonder if there will be any problems there. Though I know there haven't been problems previously (e.g. us and North with iPrimus playing at Telstra Dome)

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

WAYNE WUSSELL'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Rehab: Lever, Spargo, McAdam, Lindsay, Brown Sinnema is excellent by foot and has a decent vertical leap. Windsor is training with the Defenders. Windsor's run won't be lost playing off half back. In 19 games in 2024 he kicked 8 goals as a winger. I see him getting shots at g

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
