After a stellar AFL debut in the 2015 season when he won the Ron Evans Medal as the AFL Rising Star award, Hogan was again solid in 2016 as the club's leading goal kicker and gained selection as the centre half-forward in the AFL's 22under22 team for the second consecutive year. Against St Kilda, he booted a career high seven goals in a losing team. Nevertheless, he drew criticism for his goal kicking technique and in some quarters for his "poor body language" and, despite being contracted until the end of 2017, there has been much controversy about negotiations for a future contract in light of his family residing in Western Australia. He missed only one game - the club's win over Hawthorn from which he was a late withdrawal due to knee bruising. He had a disappointing return of only two goals (and nine behinds) for the last six weeks of the season but this partially was belied by the fact that he does so much work further afield and away from the goals.

He had a decent year, except for the last month. Goal kicking was notably worse than last year. 

Still tracking to be a gun and integral part of our team going forward.

The sooner we know what's happening re: his future, the better.

For the purpose of this review I will put aside the contractual issues.

It was an okay season with the occasional highlight.

The real question I have is whether he can play the role of the modern forward. It is an extremely difficult role and frankly outside Riewoldt (who is now at the sunset of his career) there are few players who can naturally perform in this position.

If he is to play a more CHF role he will need to improve his fitness and agility. ( A big pre-season is the appropriate cliche I believe.)

Good Luck in 2017 as our upward trajectory is dependent upon Jesse and 3 or four other players having stand out seasons.

Needs to

- play up the ground "CHF" not deep in attack

- get some serious assistance with his set shot kicking from all distances

- sort out his contractural status.

Could be a very good player for us if all these are addressed.

I also used the adjective "naturally". There are some of your mark and kick guys who have adjusted (Franklin is an excellent example as are the players you mentioned) but it is not a skill possessed by many

I would assume Tex and Josh are on $1M, not sure about Mr Jenkins   gee thought Kennedy was a natural forward  his Colemans say that

Has a great attitude. Wish he could improve his contested marking though.

By his very high standards, he didn't finish the season off particularly well, but he is well on track to be an elite player in the competition. Hopefully it is with us. It's pretty clear that 40 goals is his base, his ceiling could be anything.

Losing Hogan would set this club back years - you only need to look at the impact of Boyd on Saturday to see how important a quality key forward can be in a well constructed forward line.

He's kick 82 goals (or there abouts) in his first two seasons. 

Thats bloody good going even taking into consideration that he tailed off badly in the last 6 or so games. 

There is a problem with his hand which will be fixed shortly.

Apparently he could not even pick up a pen during the season but he  kept playing anyway.

The same "journos" ,who had him at Freo from the tabloid press now think he will pick up the pen in a week or so.

Never heard of him. 

Has just re-signed for another two years! YESSSS!

Had a good year. Watts and the likes of Kent, Garlett, Petracca, and Gawns going forward more often makes his tally look worse than it was, really.

Poor last month but still a B+ for me. His ability to get involved without hitting the scoreboard is enough to tell me he is going to be a star. His performance against Freo (still kicked 4.2) was sublime.

He's the real "package" in the league.

Why do posters still worry about his body language and kicking. Second or third order issues with a talent like Jesse. Mostly he is crook on himself and so long as he is steady and balanced in the last two steps before he kicks it doesn't matter how he gets there. In any event, it is the drop of the ball that matters more.

Watch his awareness of his position on the ground and his willingness to look for and often find good options to deliver. If handled correctly and coached appropriately he will become a great moving forward playing around CHF. The mistaken impression of Jesse is that he is expected to be a big, tough, strong marking forward operating from the goal square. Even the great David Neitz struggled in this role. His greatest strength was his leading and the ability to kick long goals. Jesse's greatest strength will be his ability to move around, win the ball and bring others into the game. His football smarts are exceptional.

Give him space and time to develop and find someone to play the third tall from to support the Weid in the goal square. I like AVB  who could play as the mobile third tall as Martin Pike played to support Garry Lyon and David Schwarz in 1994. 

I have a 10 year old son who's very happy his favourite player is staying. Love your work Jesse.

In regards to his set shots, a mate and I were discussing a few days ago about a player in the 90's who completely changed his style. Used to take a grab, scuff the turf where the mark was, step back another 5 yards and make another scuff so he knew his direct approach.

We thought it could have been Buckethands Loewe who was a shocking kick before Peter Hudson straightened him up but can't find any footage to confirm.

Perhaps that is an approach Jesse needs. Stripped back, short and straight

Must add more strings to his bow. Work on his goal kicking and lead up at the footy more rather than yelling for the player to kick it on his said
