Oh no. There might be a year at the end of the contract of one of our best players ever where he doesn’t play much. Really happy with this news and loved the touch of the letter.14 points

No surprises about the identify of the handful of Demonland posters who are determined to look for the dark cloud surrounding the silver lining of both Max and Jack re-signing.13 points

From Jack Viney ... Dear members, I wanted you to be the first to know that I’ll officially be a Demon for life. Today I agreed to a contract extension that will see me pull on the red and blue all the way through until 2028. Let’s be honest, I was never going anywhere. This footy club has been part of my life for as long as I can remember. Melbourne is more than just a club to me – it’s home. The connection I feel to the jumper, its history, and our passionate supporters runs so deep, and I am incredibly proud to continue on this journey with you all. I have created some special memories over the past 12 seasons and formed some amazing bonds. The love and respect I have for my teammates and coaches, as well as the staff and the whole club, is unrivalled. Working and learning alongside my coach Goody, skipper Max and the broader leaders continues to be a privilege, and I am so thankful for the way our club focuses on growing us not only as players but as people. On a personal note, my family absolutely loves being around this football club. My wife Charlotte, along with our daughters Mila and Chloe, have formed their own strong bonds, and singing the song in the rooms with them after a win never gets old. I’m excited for my daughters to create further memories here, and who knows, maybe one day we’ll even see them running out in the red and blue for the Melbourne AFLW team! The support that we’ve received from you, our incredible members, has been unwavering as always. I know it hasn’t been the year we all had hoped for, but we have a real opportunity to finish our season on Friday night in a manner that makes you all proud to belong. As Goody has said publicly, this week is another chance for us to really show what we are made of as a football club. Today, the boys heard from Melbourne royalty in Hassa Mann. This weekend he and some of his 1964 premiership winning teammates, will celebrate the 60th anniversary of their flag. We will honour them as part of the pre-game, and let’s acknowledge the legacy they’ve left on our club by filling the stands with red and blue. Hassa spoke to the strong rivalry between us and the Pies and expressed how much it would mean to him and his teammates if we can get the win. It's also Member Thank You Round, where we can acknowledge you, the heart of our footy club. It’s something we speak about a lot, making you all proud to belong, and it means a lot to the group to feel your support behind us. Friday will also be a chance to honour the great Big Ben Brown, who will do a lap of honour with his family at half-time. It will also be Alex Neal-Bullen’s final game in the red and blue and a chance to say thank you for his contribution to our club. So fair to say we’ve got a lot to play for. Whilst there is a lot of hard work ahead, there’s also undoubtedly a lot of good times to come. I have full faith in this group and this club. The challenge on Friday night and beyond, is one we will tackle head on. And if there’s one thing Dad taught me, it’s that when you tackle, you tackle with intent. Go Dees! Jack Viney12 points

I just watched it on Kayo. It was good, but jeepers, a few of you made it sound like the sermon on the mount. If you want a sermon, come to me.12 points

Loved Garry Lyon as a player but over the years I've found that he has gone out of his way to be critical of our club. In recent times I feel that has changed. Started in SEN a few days ago but his impassioned segment on 'On The Couch' was next level. Spoke eloquently and with heart about the Petracca situation and made more sense in 10 minutes than all other pundits combined. Also loved the way he slapped down Clarkson's clip about Viney. If you haven't seen it do yourself a favour. Red and Blue through and through. ❤💙 ADMIN EDIT:11 points

It’s preaching to the choir, but we have a chance on Friday to give a proper send off to Ben Brown and Alex Neal-Bulleen, as well as sticking one up the Pies. Let’s get as many of us there as possible - I have 3 General Admission tickets which I will pass on at no cost for anyone who doesn’t have a membership and is thinking about going or maybe wants to take some friends. Send me a pm - first in, best dressed.9 points

@WalkingCivilWar, your reporting is priceless. In a single post, you’ve given us lesser Dees fans the only information that matters, thus rendering every piece of toxic, muck-raking, click-baiting garbage from the likes of Tom Morris and his slimy, self-promoting ilk irrelevant. As someone invested in a sympathetic, considerate, always respectful engagement with the people you’re ‘reporting’ on, you’re more a journalist than they could ever hope to be, simply because your approach grants you access to the truth, without those so-called ‘journalists’ frankly pathetic need for attention. Not only that, but your calling out the fact that some players DO read Demonland, and are personally injured by the critical nonsense that goes on here, way too much, was wonderfully gutsy. I truly believe it will change some behaviours. I know it’s been said, but you’re a treasure, nay, in fact a Princess (and I too know which one 😉).9 points

Max Gawn should be up there right next to Barassi and Robbie Flower.9 points

The extension is 3, not 4. He was already contracted until the end of 2025.8 points

We need to start sticking up for ourselves. We remain silent on most things. The media know that the BS stories will not be refuted by the club. At least not straight away. It's clickbait heaven for them. We should go down the GWS socials team, and start picking on everyone. Use humour to say F U.8 points

Well summarised. It is truly and utterly pathetic. Carlton, Collingwood and, to a lesser extent, Essendon escape scrutiny. We've just come off a 10 goal demolition of the Suns we're no interstate club has won with half a team. All kudos goes to the Blues against a pathetic and hapless Eagles. And what do we cop? The aforementioned pile of faeces that you have do eloquently outlined. What doesn't kill us makes us stronger!8 points

Lots of headlines and negative media. Club in crisis. Toxic culture. Players want to leave. No communication. Poor leadership. Staggered they don’t talk to each other. The truth is that he wants to go. What I don't know, is whether that will lead to a trade request." @tommorris32 gives an update on Christian Petracca and the situation at Melbourne. Free agency came into being in 2012 and many thought that there would be a stack of top quality players available as RFA or FA but that hasn't happened Nearly all the clubs are signing their best players on long term deals through their FA years. A number would be on front-ended deals too. Perhaps most We're not the only club stitching up their best players. All the clubs are doing it As for Ben Brown, we had to offer him 4 years to get him. And it's my bet that he earned the least amount of money in his last year (another front ended contract) And without Brown, do we win the flag in 2021? Well, our chances would have at least been diminished (in my view)7 points

What is the actual waste though? How much value would JVR have gotten from some no-name 100th pick being on the list, in contrast to a proven AFL-level forward like Ben Brown?7 points
-
It would be common practice amongst all the clubs. In fact, it's the best way to construct a contract so as to not be up for big dollars in the last year of a long deal The last year of a deal can therefore be effectively a tack-on year And with the salary cap heading towards $20Million, paying a figure of say, $500k, in the last year of a contract would only represent 2.5% of a year's salary cap Maybe a lot less if the final year of a contract is around $350k to $450k So why don't we hear about the above in the media?7 points
-
You don't know the structure of the deal. How do you know it's not heavily front loaded on an already veteran salary?7 points

According to Goody's Presser they will be honouring the 64 premiership team as well. Hassa Mann was at the club today talking about his hate for Collingwood.7 points

Well, we have another development in trade circles. A source inside an AFL cheer squad claims the Tiger Army is heavily targeting a member of the DA and Demonland for training reports. It hasn't been a joyous year at Tigerland and Punt Rd isn't the easiest training ground to present a training report to footy fans from. They are looking for someone to bring upbeat reports and not necessarily football observations and they do need some much needed laughter after a very unlucky first year at the helm for Ooze. Initial reports had the Tiger Army targeting one @picket fence for his ability to negotiate tricky terrain around fences. The deal was almost sealed, but at the last minute the deal was shut down by the fan forum PUNT ROAD END as most of its members are susceptible to CAPS. Attention quickly turned to star giant head holder, banner maker and track specialist WCW. A record long-term deal has been offered to lure WCW over to the Tiger Army. Andy and the Demon Army have been contacted for comment. More to follow.6 points

i'm sure MFC have put contingencies in JV and MG's contracts for their final season or two. It would clearly be irresponsible to not, given Jack's body and Max being one proper knee injury away from retirement. Payments based off actual games played per season, allowing for early retirement, front loading and adapting into a coaching role etc are all in play for these two. The negativity around here from some is just depressing.6 points

Glad Melbourne doesn't make hard decisions like in the glory days of 2009-2013 when we got rid of Russell Robertson and James McDonald despite having forward and mid coaches at the time.6 points

If you thought I didn’t like Max’s deal just wait until you hear my thoughts on this one. What an absolute joke. 4 years for a beat up one dimensional mid who has to nurse a cooked shoulder through half the game. We all love Jack. We all want to keep Jack, but 2 years was the deal. 4??? Seriously, what are we doing here??? And we are surprised that guys like Tracc are looking out for number 1 when we just hand out whatever our leaders want? Something is badly wrong here and we are bribing our leaders in to staying.6 points

My wife, who is not into footy at all - she's too busy publishing novels - has walked past my cloister where I trype stories and watch footy when Melbourne is winning - I have followed the Demons since the losing 1958 Grand Final and experienced way too much pain first hand to watch another battering - and once heard someone exaggerate the name Petracca: it became Petraaaaaaacka and she now mumbles it every time she sees me watching footy. To be honest, all this hoo ha about a player who was nearly mortally wounded by yet another E Coli Wobbler atrocity - I would like to see some justice in the Season Finale, yes, E Coli Wibbler Blood - and I am totally fed up with the hornets nest Morris has stained the stratosphere with. He is a yarn spinner who would only get a kick on a real footy field if someone kicked his backside. Suddenly the Demonland World erupts into more spin on how Goodwin is no good, the whole club is no good, then the inevitable Schache, Billings, Grundy, Macadam, Draft pick fiasco, Stafford, Recruiting Officer Whinge Fest erupts. Yes, this is the best example in Lilliputia, I mean Australia, where the theory of 'Society of the Spectacle' - and he ain't writing about framed things called Glasses - by Guy Debord is manifest. I finish with a quote from my wife, the much-published writer: Petraaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaca!6 points

Surprising they haven't reported the following "Premiership full forward kicks 6 goals on weekend but prefers to give footy away than to play on with dismal demons"6 points

Agree re Clarko but he did backflip in 24 hours. Yes, Garry was a passionate Demon tonight but he actually told the story as it probably is without the sensationalism in which others indulge. Brown and Buckley were basically speechless. Lyon made so much sense that one could not argue against it. You know what? I came away from this thinking it could be a great fork in the road for us. Through injury and other circumstances it has been the season from hell. Succeed on Friday night and its 12 wins. Collingwood, Carlton and Essendon barely or not as good with a fraction of our issues. Christian no doubt has been through trauma. This will be another evolutionary off season step. Change will occur. Draftees will arrive. Trades will be made. Stars will return. A host of young players will further develop. Coaches will move on. We'll be back!6 points
