  3. I got the letter but not the e-mail. No matter, I had already voted via proxy in favour of the Board’s - on the whole - pragmatic, reasonable and incremental changes to the Constitution. I would urge other members to do the same if for no other reason than to save the Club $200k now (and a whole heap of time) associated with electronic voting for director elections. More substantive changes can happen later. And another thing. I’m sorry, Deemocracy, but the cynic in me views your proposal to make wholesale changes to the Constitution (particularly around club purpose & identity, and inclusion & diversity) as noble posturing, when it appears what is really sought is easier access for a member or members of your group to get on the Board, having missed out repeatedly in the past. In my view, the incumbents are united and cohesive, were well and truly vindicated in their stance to stand by our senior coach (and CEO) and jettison he-who-must-not-be-named last year and, of course, presided over the Club’s first Premiership in 57 excruciating, long years. I mean, really, what is this all about? The Club has never been in as good a shape - in my lifetime, which is reaching the half century mark - as it is now. Finally, and no offence to all the lovely CAs out there, but we have enough Chartered Accountants on the Board as it is. (I can say that because I’m a CA myself, although not working as one at the moment - no great loss to the profession, I’m afraid to say!)

  9. the major reason for a constitution change was to allow for electronic voting and thus save the club a lot of money and make voting easier for all members the other changes are really all minor to the current status quo 25% no is all it takes to scupper this and we continue with a medieval costly postal voting system focus on the big issue, folks

  10. I don’t want to hijack the metalfest that is this thread, but I feel like I need to point out that The Beatles only appear ‘tepid, middling and uninteresting’ because everything they did has been regurgitated by those with less talent for 60 years. In the context of what popular music was when they started as a band, and what they helped turn it into, I think it’s hard to fathom their creative growth. Also Paul Weller is a boss. Moving from The Jam to The Style Council was amazingly brave at the time. He’s a pure artist.

  13. He’s undoubtedly a defensive coach. Possibly to a fault, but possibly because it works very well and gets results. I don’t believe that means he can’t succeed now. St Kilda’s list is a far bigger impediment to success than his game plan.

  17. That’s a fair point of itself, and if someone were seriously trying to get onto the board I don’t doubt that they would be able to rustle up the requisite number. I think the point of concern is that the practice in similar professional member-based sporting clubs (MCC, VRC, other AFL clubs) is either 2 or 3, so why is our board seeking to wind it out to 20 from the current 2? It smacks of trying to build a bigger moat around themselves, consistent with other recent behaviours they have shown. Also reminds me of immediately pre-COVID where the club once a year or so encouraged fans to come down to open training sessions; it was amazing to see an area roped off next to the players area for “Board Members”. Very clubby, and not in a good way!

  20. I really hope that when they have their press conference they openly state where they expect to finish in the next couple of years. It feels like a club that doesn’t realise how far away they are from challenging for a premiership. Their list is so middle of the road it’s not funny and as you say their top end talent just doesn’t stack up against most teams.
    5 points
  21. I wonder Lyon's KPIs will be. The saints list is a total shambles. Demographics are all over the place in terms of age and games played spread. Their budding superstar in King seems to suffer from the yips and is still 2-3 years away from his peak. Ryder is a big loss, tellingly even at his age. Marshall is a good player, but platued last season, and will now have to carry ruck duties. They lack key defenders and have a c grade midfield. But most of all they simply do t have enough real A graders. In that sense they remind me of the dees under Neeld. A bunch of b graders with questiable work ethic and therefore poor fitness. Not much neeld could have done with that list. And not much Lyon will be able to do. Given the trade period is finished Lyon is stuck with this list, at least for th3 next season, unlike the hawks who have gone down the total rebuild route and so have a strong hand in this and next year's draft.

  22. 100% agree and I hope JT and the team do as well. Can't see much that will translate into AFL level and it will take years before he's even close to a game. With the way player movement works these days, surely we are better to draft the best possible mid and use free agency/trade to go for experienced key position players.

  23. I looked at the posts and everybody agreed we are thin in the ruck area and when we actually addressed that area with a category B rookie some objected whilst others applauded. I think we should congratulate the recruiters that a player regardless of his background chose the MFC and not the Eagles or Carlton. If this type of system was not in place players like Blicavs would still be running around at the athletics. We now have a project ruckman who may become the next Gawn/Grundy or the next Bradtke we would never know if we did not take the risk,

  24. From the Herald Sun online (no link available) - “The Demons have access to Finn Emile-Brennan as an NGA prospect this year. Considered a potential pick later in the draft, the Dandenong Stingrays defender is part of the club’s Academy given his mum hails from Mauritius. He played three games for Vic Country during the under-18 national championships and was invited to the state draft combine in October. Emile-Brennan’s kicking is his strength. Riak Andrew is an NGA prospect to watch for next year, being the younger brother of Gold Coast’s Mac Andrew. Basketballer Kyah Farris-White has signed on as a Category B Rookie ahead of the draft.”
    5 points
  25. No we haven’t missed out on Finn because we can have 3 category b rookie spots. the whole point of category b is to entice elite sporting talent to afl and assist in increasing afl talent. If you need me to spell it out to you again I’m happy to. it doesn’t take the spot of anyone busting their [censored] through the draft system, so there is literally no disadvantage at all. most of these elite sportspeople who are category b rookies have busted their gut in their sport of choice to get drafted for eg nba, so thinking they have the easy road to afl is simply not correct

  26. Many trying to rewrite history Fritta kicks one because Viney refuses an easy clearance to the Dogs who get first hand on the footy but it’s not clean and it spills to Harmes who kicks perfectly to space Frittas second comes from clearance involving Oliver and Trac out the front, players fly Gawny going back actually gets a hand on it preventing a spoil and it goes over the back Fritta great reaction Brown’s goal -Martin jumps early looking to body Jackson and is not worried about the footy, Jackson stops as he’s about to jump off his foot pads the ball to Trac who spins and kicks to space for Brown to mark in front Gus’s goal - for me he was our most influential player for the 3rd quarter Tracs goal- class but don’t underestimate Kossie’s block on Dunkley which prevents pressure on Trac Sparrow- again think it was English looks for body and goes early to negate the ruckman with the bigger leap, Jackson goes to ground and taps the ground ball to Viney and we break away Clarrie - tell me you don’t see the special traits and potential Jackson has in this goal, think it was Viney who gets a boot to it but Jackson’s ground ball pick up for a player his size was exceptional, that doesn’t happen with any of the other 3 rucks on the ground and outside of Natanui it doesn’t happen with any other ruckman in the comp Im not saying Jackson turned the game, the midfield group and the Dogs refusal to just go in level and play a stopper at the back of CBD’s all led to that mad minute. I never felt dead and buried, we’d seen it throughout the season the team responded when challenged. After Bont put them 19 points up I turned to my oldest boy and said we just need a goal, we’re not playing bad we just need to convert from our forward entries. 1 minute later I said wow, wasn’t expecting such a quick turnaround when we were level. There we’re points throughout that 3rd quarter where May and lever stood up, Tmac came into it a bit leading up the ground to assist with transition, Brown did the same. Really thought Gus was important as that defensive wingman and was the player who gave us the lead. Your view point to think Jackson did nothing and base it on stats is poor, he was important but wasn’t alone. The kid can play, hope he does well because he’s a nice kid and I like to see people do well. It’s footy and how he plays no longer effects me except when we play Freo. To many are tainting their opinion on him based on him deciding to leave

  30. North are building ominously towards finals and will likely finish 4th (they should defeat Richmond next week). Their Irish girls are slamming it, Wall is a beast, and Jazzy Garner is (close to) the best player in the league. If we miss top spot (more likely than not) then Brisbane will have to play North. The Lions 🦁 may well be surprised. But we are building nicely too. Our depth and skills and the evenness of our list has positioned us as genuine Season 7 contenders.

  33. It’s a bit unfair to be accusing clubs of getting “sucked in” mate. The AFL created the Cat B rookie for this outcome. Personally I think it’s a great pathway and we’ve already benefited (debatable to what extent) with J Smith. Cat A rookies is where the club should be targeting the players from country leagues for sure but the criteria for Cat B rookies is pretty clear and obviously comes with a relatively higher risk of busting as we witnessed with young Bradtke.

  34. IMO Matthew Jefferson's highlight reel is quite underwhelming. I didn't notice any contested ball involvements and a lot of those goals in his 7-goal game were gifted. Unlike JVR he came across as quite passive. But of course JT would be over all these things.

  35. We're filling in off-season brawling about whose ideas are better, but this isn't a vote on which constitution to adopt, it's whether to accept the board's proposed changes. If 25.01% of people vote against adopting the amendments on offer then nothing is altered. If that does happen, what do Deemocracy propose to do next? For right or wrong, the board isn't going to put the alternative to a member vote, so where does a no vote sub-75% yes vote leave us other than continuing the brawl into 2023 with no change at all.

  37. It's not devastating, @Dr. Gonzo, Mr Lawrence, in my opinion, seems to be seeking some sort of validation and using the Club as a means to do it. He cost the Club money, having to hire legal counsel, not the actions of a true supporter in my book The hypocrisy irks me also, what transparency, who are the members of Deemocracy, as you seem to be a 'defender' in a sense of Lawrences' actions, are you? He seems to be following the Trump mantra by playing the victim card, perhaps the fact he got no support when he tried to [censored] his way on to the Board in the last election still hasn't sunk in.

  39. Melbourne has all but assured itself of a top two finish to the (second) 2022 AFLW season after crushing Essendon by 41 points on Sunday. It now holds a four point lead over third placed Adelaide along with a handy percentage advantage with one round remaining before the finals. The Demons opened kicking with the advantage of the squally wind that often prevails at Casey Fields and for the third week in a row, they kept their opponents scoreless in the opening term. Speedster Alyssa Bannan opened proceedings with the first goal and the dangerous Kate Hore added to the goal tally with the first of her three goals not long after. The lead at the first break was just 14 points but Karen Paxman who was in dominant form, added to Essendon’s woes by kicking a goal against the wind early in the second quarter. The plucky Bombers showed some fight with a goal to Catherine Phillips and for a few minutes they seemed to have grabbed away the home team’s momentum. Eden Zanker’s goal ruined the revival in mid term and the Demons went in at half time with a comfortable 17 point lead which they stretched to 38 points at the last break and the game was virtually all over. Both teams were goalless in the final term. Melbourne dominated all over the ground with Lauren Pearce and Tayla Harris giving Paxman, Tyla Hanks, Eliza West and Olivia Purcell plenty of supply. Libby Birch and Tahlia Gillard were irrepressible and Shelley Heath was again excellent. Hore did the rest up forward. Numerically, the Demons were well on top in the key statistics of disposals, uncontested possessions and inside 50s and they now look forward to the final game on Saturday against the lowly Eagles who can expect an inhospitable reception at Casey Fields. MELBOURNE 2.2.14 4.2.26 7.5.47 7.8.50 ESSENDON 0.0.0 1.3.9 1.3.9 1.3.9 GOALS MELBOURNE Hore 3 Bannan 2 Paxman Zanker ESSENDON Phillips BEST MELBOURNE Paxman Hore Purcell Birch Gillard Heath ESSENDON Prespakis Phillips Vogt Marshall Toogood Bannister INJURIES MELBOURNE Mithen (head) ESSENDON Nil REPORTS MELBOURNE Nil ESSENDON Nil CROWD 1,518 at Casey Fields ODDSPOT Not only did the Demons keep their opponents scoreless in the opening quarter for the third week in a row but, in each of those games the final score kicked against them was 1.3.9.

  44. We're a happy team at Hawthorn......Boards wouldn't do anything nefarious to scupper potential Board nominees they don't want . Would they? Were it not for a mole inside the Hawthorn Football Club it’s likely that Peter Nankivell would be guaranteed a presidential coronation when its AGM convenes on December 13. The only reason that’s in doubt is that word somehow leaked of a bid to secretly shut the board nominations on Wednesday night. There’s more than a whiff of skulduggery about these events. Sure, the nominations had been open to candidates for many weeks. But who knew anything about it? Nankivell, the club’s vice-president, stood to benefit most if the plan had succeeded. So, too, would have outgoing president Jeff Kennett, whose design had been to appoint Nankivell, his long-serving lieutenant, without a clash of any elbows during the handover phase. There are arcane rules underpinning board nominations at the club. They’re supposed to close 45 days before the date of the AGM, which until Wednesday had yet to be announced. It seems the plan was to finally publicise the date while simultaneously shutting off the nominations, thereby locking out prospective candidates. Isn’t that a quaint ploy? Such transparency and sturdy governance from a club that cries shrill about both while managing an investigation over its alleged mistreatment of First Nations players. Anyway, with just hours to go until Wednesday’s deadline, which nobody knew about, someone tipped off a select number of Hawthorn powerbrokers, giving them a couple of hours to cobble together the forms and undermine the Nankivell power play in record time.

I responded to his/their email yesterday asking in the spirit of transparency he/they have been fighting for could they please provide me with the names personal addresses and emails of each of them so that I could contact them to give them my opinion on their amendments. I have been ignored. They are happy to grab our personal details but not prepared to even disclose who any of them are or the same details they were happy to go to the Supreme Court to get of ours. Any of you that think Lawrence and his group are honestly fighting for transparency and open communication, this says all I need to know about their authenticity. Deemocracy NOT !!!!

  46. I'm sure the Bord are more frustrated than the rest of us on the lack of a resolution of the facilities. I can't believe people are suggesting the Board should be sacked because of it. What do they think another Board is going to achieve if it is going to be in the MCG precinct. It's been explained how difficult it is compared to any other Club because we don't have the land and have to get public land off multiple public bodies. If it's ever going to be in this precinct we are never going to have a better team than the current President who ran the body we have to convince and a CEO who was successful in getting facilities up at Olympic Park. We aren't going to get anyone else with the contacts and experience than those two. I'm guessing the Coonwealth games has set it back a few years. So what? We sack the Board. The Board has its hands tied behind its back in communicating exactly what's going on because it is dealing with Govt etc and any comments could politically jeopardise the whole thing. It would be ludicrous to sack this Board because of this. I see Lawrence has mentioned this frustration with the Board in trying to drum up support for himself which just reinforces to me why he shouldn't be anywhere near the Board.

  49. Knight mare is way off the pace and think he may have been found out No way Hawks are taking McKenzie before Jhye Clark if they are taking a midfielder, yes Knightmare May have got wrapped up in the Falcons kid staying down there but the Hawks aren’t letting that happen Eagles aren’t taking Kaleb Smith at 28 if Ed Allan is available. Smith is another Wesley boy, has really good pace, maybe 6ft just, so not key position, foot skills are not great and there’s penetrating kicks which go long and deep without direction and there’s penetrating kicks like Daniel Rich which come off the boot sweetly which stay low, move quickly through the air, go where they’re intended and can’t generally be intercepted. Smith is in the former. He’s a great kid, talented cricketer who could go far in the white ball game but I’m not sure he’s getting drafted and not sure how his name comes up. Two best players in the Wesley side are Ginbey and O’Driscoll(23 draft), most likely to be talked about for next years draft from Wesley outside of O’Driscoll is Austin Chapman who is an endurance machine and big time accumulator in the Lachie Neale mould, but he’s coming off an ACL and lacks size. Eagles I think at 28 take best available and if Allen is gone and they are staying local Baxter Phillip, Conor McDonald, Sam Gilbey, Darcy Jones all come into consideration before Smithy Back on topic though with Knightmare and IMO he’s often off the mark uses buzz drafting words when talking about players but IAH really just changes up the Phantom drafts and player watch done up by Cal Twomey. And I’m not sure we’ll take Jefferson, think they see our forward line struggles and lazy option is to say we need a forward, without assessing poor delivery, Brown being forced to play a role which doesn’t suit him, Turner coming in or Tomo (2nd year off a knee and back early 21 form - yes Deelanders he was reliable and important then) coming back in and Petty moving forward, JVR all into calculations along with 2 1st Rounders next year. I think we take best available to fill roles of elite kick, mid who can impact the scoreboard, rebounding half back or line breaking runner with good foot skills
