As a health professional, I’m getting very f*****g angry about both the federal government’s half-arsed rollout, not to mention their incompetence at negating false information in the media, and some people’s utter selfishness and lack of community responsibility in ‘delaying’ their own vax for selfish or ignorant reasons. There is only ONE way to reduce the broader societal impact of this virus. ONE. Herd immunity through vaccination. If you can, GET VACCINATED!!!! It’s your civic duty, if nothing else. The Exhibition Building mass vax centre is populated by vaccinators doing sweet F A too much of the day.12 points

There is a suggestion that 3 of the initial 5 cases were eligible to have had a vaccine but hadn't had one. It would also appear one of them (the so called case 5 - a 60 year old fella) was the first link in the chain and then infected two households (not to mention being out and about in the community for a week while infectious). One of the people this fella (case 5) infected in his household then infected five people at his workplace. If he had had a vaccine then there is very good chance he would not have got infected in the first place and therefore would not have passed it on to anyone else. And we would not be talking about lockdowns and missing the footy on Friday night. Or thousands and thousands of people having to down tools and waste hours to get a cotton bud stuck up their nose. And of course all the other major disruptions to people's lives And it beggars belief, if true, but it is being reported that one of the older infected person's doctor did a house call (coz they were sick). And the doctor was also unvaccinated. Jesus wept But hey, as long at the 70 year old fella in his 'safe' suburb is ok then all good.10 points

Forget the children. As I get older it's getting too late for me too. Even watching on TV.8 points

Just a reminder to try to keep personal politics out of discussion. I know things can get heated and we're all frustrated with the situation. Try to keep it civil and definitely don't take your political revenge on someone in the actual footy threads.7 points

I had the first AZ vaccination last Sunday. Just a very mild headache for a day afterwards. The clotting risk is lower as you get older, for 70-year-olds it's about 2 per million. Less than the chance of a car accident on the way to the clinic. Sometime, events will be limited to fully vaccinated people. That's an incentive to get it.7 points

The late finish times are a major deterrent for most people attending or watching games, particularly with children. The earlier the better as far as I'm concerned, and that goes for Sunday afternoon games as well.7 points

Ah, but you didn't change it did you. Both accounts are still active and you have recently posted under both usernames and got caught out doing so. How many other aliases do you have? Speaking of such matters and trolls in general, did anyone else notice that Pickett2Jackson was oddly absent during Craig Hutchinson's weird and short-lived visit to this forum, only to suddenly reappear the instant that Craig vanished? Could these four posters (and others) be the twisted work of the one sad individual? Strange days indeed. Most peculiar, mama.6 points

Maybe the AFL can just give us the 4 points after initially taking it away from us last week.6 points

Couldn't see this anywhere else on Demonland and think it's worth a thread. Sam Edmund from SEN reported yesterday that the start time for Friday night games may change from 7.50 pm Melbourne time to 7.20 pm. However, I haven't seen any follow up news, so not sure whether it's true or not. I would support such a change. Here's the story: https://www.sen.com.au/news/2021/05/25/friday-night-football-set-for-time-change-in-huge-win-for-fans/5 points

The Fed Gov is imposing austerity and has been outside of JobKeeper and JobSeeker since the middle of last year. Now that they've stopped JobKeeper, there's essentially very little being invested in the Australian people because neoliberals on both sides think we have to pay down gov debt that can only be purchased with dollars created by the government in the first place. As usual, the Fed (the sole legal issuer of the AUD) is leaving everything up to the revenue constrained states, so Victoria are investing when it should come from the Fed Gov. Same with social housing. If the Fed Gov hadn't monumentally stuffed up vaccinations, we'd all be going to the footy, no worries. Even @old dee.5 points

Had the first AZ shot on Monday. A bit wonky yesterday but fine today. Most people don't know anyone that's been seriously sick from Covid. I think that's one of the big drivers for complacency. This study on the neurological effects of Covid made up my mind pretty quickly. 1 in 3. https://www.ft.com/content/beb407c0-03a3-4aae-ba4b-7f66390d7409 Heard a federal MP banging on about the latest Vic outbreak and how people should have been vaccinated pffft. And yes, scientists recommend to the feds almost 12 months ago to ramp up onshore MRNA manufacturing capabilities5 points
-
A group of scientists were pushing for this capacity a while back...we would have been well down the track to having the capability to manufacture if they had of been listened too. Now it's going to be a good 12 months plus with all the p....around and if it's like energy policy it will never happen. Science and politics don't seem to be good bedfellows these days unfortunately.5 points

9-1 10 Rounds played…..9 wins….. 36 points in the premiership bank. WTF???? (the same a last week) And now 2nd on the ladder. Firstly, an apology, usually I bang this out on Mondays but as it was a public holiday where I am I had a couple of other things I needed to do and yesterday I had a game of golf. Played like a dog. Managed to scramble 33 points without hitting too many good shots and leaving a lot of points on the greens with less than good putts. Bit like us on the weekend, thereabouts but not good enough. Hence, I am banging it out today instead. Damn, I found it frustrating to lose to Adelaide the way we did. Have to say no amount of “the umps got it wrong” from the AFL makes it any easier to accept. Hate it! Our defence was found out and may had a shocker against Walker and his murder of crows. Of all the people to have a bad day against??? The rest of the defence team were also out of sorts, we gave up the most points in any match so far this season. Adelaide also applied constant midfield pressure that paid off for them. I hope that our newfound maturity is reflected in the game next week. We need to learn from this loss. Still, as much as I was disappointed with the loss, Sitting 9-1 after the first 10 rounds is pretty damn pleasing. I would have ripped ya arm off taking that at any time before the season began. And so, to the Round 11 encounter with the Bulldog at Marvel on Friday night. Big match…. And that is an understatement. Whoever wins this goes a game clear at the top and builds that little bit of a mental edge over the other team. The Bulldogs have been cruising lately but have a couple of injuries that may take their edge off. We have a few problems of our own on the injury front but that may be on the improve. Salem looks likely to be back which will help in defence and will also give us additional drive from the back half. The facts: We are coming off an umpire error loss in Adelaide - Advantage the maggots They are coming off a light training run against the Saints witches hats. – Advantage them We are playing on at Marvel– Advantage them The odds are stacked against us. Problem areas of the game for us. Umps are a problem that we cannot do anything about. They are already responsible for effecting the results of 3 games so far this season. While the game itself ha the potential to be a classic, 1st vs. 2nd. There are individual contests within the game that will also be more than interesting. Who runs with Bont? Harmes? Who gets the job on Petracca and Oliver? There is going to be so much to watch. As good as the defence has been for 9 rounds, it looked to lose all structure on Saturday. As I said, May had a less than ordinary game and there looked to be a plan in place by Adelaide to bring the ball into the forward 50 low and hard. It worked. Last week the bulldogs had 15 of their 21 goals scored by 5 of their forwards. If our defenders are no better than last week we are done. And done by a lot. Salem back for Jetta should help settle the group a bit. One can only hope. Midfield improved their center clearances a bit and that will be needed to give us that initial drive to unsettle the Dogs. McCrea, Libba and Smith need to be controlled in this area. We can match them with Oliver and Petracca and last week Brayshaw snagged a good number of clearances as well. I see this area of the ground as a close arm wrestle that will determine the outcome of the game. We come up against the best midfield in the competition this week. It will be minus Treloar and that will be significant. Really looking forward to this contest. One area of the contest we might just have an advantage is on the wings. Looks like English might be back after a 4 week layoff to challenge Max. Good to see Max regaining a bit of form last week. We won the clearances last week and gave up 15 goals. How does that work? Now for the forwards……. The good; There was no good The bad; The goal tally from our KPFs The ugly; My mood after the game. Gee it must be tempting to go back to the initial setup we had at the beginning of the season that was forced upon us by injuries. There looked to be so much more room for the forwards to operate in. Last week it still looked crowded and the forwards were static with ordinary slow delivery. Not sure how you sort it out. I would still work this week around Tmac/Weid/ Fritsch setup with Jackson/Max working through there as required. Maybe best to leave all that to people that are wiser than I. Changes? Salem back for sure. The other thing I want to see is Sparrow get another run. I like the pressure he brings, and I think he will develop well over the next season or so. Bathwater Express is misfiring on a couple of cylinders and we missed out on the adding the twin overhead crow feathers to the aerial last week. Never mind, I will take 9-1 at this stage of the season. I am not one that will stop drinking the Kool-Aid at the first sign of stomach cramps or a bit of vomit in the mouth. I am in this all the way. Now for the prediction…. Head and heart in a big battle. Head says Dogs in a close one. Heart says “never in doubt!”. Have to go with the heart…… Dees by a couple of goals!4 points

I will be RAPT! ? And it’s only fair considering you Victorians have kicked this off again....(joking) I was heading down to Melbourne tomorrow to watch the game and spend time with my mate who is a psychopathic Doggies fan. I was going to be sitting amongst Dogs fans and had planned to not show my Demon allegiance until we were 9 goals up with 3 minutes to play. My mate is a retired international airline pilot and a nicer, friendlier, more intelligent man you would not meet. Sadly, for Dog’s games, the bloke takes on the persona of Western suburbs bogan complete with painted face, ultra loud beer burps, calling everyone “knackers” screaming himself hoarse abusing umpires for every free kick paid to the opposition and even ripping the lids from meat pies and eating them first. Needless to say those plans have been cancelled and QANTAS has already refunded my fare. On reflection, maybe it is a good thing.4 points

I’ve been straw-polling my patients on whether they’ve been vacced, and reactions. All but a handful who can but haven’t, cite apparent lack of urgent need due to small/nil community numbers. The worst reaction I’ve heard was a 30 year old S.O.G Copper, superfit obviously, who reckons he couldn’t get out of bed for 2 days with flu-like symptoms. My own reaction was perhaps the worst I’ve heard for over 50 year-old (weak as p**s probably) - had about 3-4 hours of fever aches 12 hours after, and a bit rubbish next 2 days. Not one person has regretted having it. Obviously!4 points

Current evidence (worldwide) of clots with AZ vax is 4-6 clots per million doses. That would be < 150 clots if the entire Aust. pop vaccinated with AZ. Readily available info.4 points

This still baffles me. Respected scientists were advocating for government investment in mRNA manufacturing capacity since June last year. Apparently it is not that expensive - maybe $100m to get going - and the technology is thought to have significant other benefits, including cancer treatment. What’s the downside of making this investment? Correct me if I’m wrong, but the only commitment to invest in mRNA that I’ve seen was the $50m the Vic Govt announced about two months ago. We’re likely to need COVID variant vaccines/boosters in the next few years, mRNA is the most adaptable technology, why aren’t we jumping on this? Edit: this article dated just this past Monday indicates the government has just now invited proposals for establishing mRNA manufacturing capacity. Surely this could have been done at least six months ago even not longer and surely three years to establish production is not sufficiently ambitious in the context and given others have argued it could be done in 12 months. https://www.smh.com.au/business/companies/government-makes-no-promises-as-it-looks-for-mrna-producers-20210524-p57uix.html4 points

True all that. Side-effects have sadly been given much more weight than they deserve by the media. They exist, but have negligible incidence, and less significance now that people know what to look for.4 points

What form do you expect Spargo and Hunt to find? Spargo is in perfect form. He's doing exactly what the coaches ask week in week out. Hunt is playing about as well as we can expect from Hunt. He had a poor game against the Crows, some of which might be explained by Salem out, but overall he's been serviceable. If we're going to go deep in the finals he'll have to step up under pressure but there's very little competition for his spot right now.4 points

If ever there was a (non health related) reason people need to get vaccinated this is it. Population gets vaccinated, it no longer becomes an issue how many cases get reported. Life goes on.3 points

Hopefully they all test negative. A positive test result would definitely force us into a compacted fixture later in the year.3 points
