Yay, another thread turns into Goodwin bashing. Pity the No D!ckheads rule doesn't apply to this site.16 points

Ha these comments remind me of when we were chasing Melksham.. the pitchforks were already lit before the bloke was given an opportunity.13 points

31st in the AFL for average marks per game. He'll continually present and provide an option for escape from defensive 50.12 points

Jaksch is a completely different scenario. Jaksch never locked down a position at GWS, nor at Carlton. Tomlinson has played about every game for consistent finalists over a four year period. The comparison is ridiculous, frankly.12 points

Elliott's future is cloudy, but he's lightning quick and would deliver us the cup. I love these riddles.12 points

Do we really need the same thread from you over and over and over?10 points

Appropriate post, some expecting every player we bring in to be a star. The same posters who whinge about our depth8 points

Not sure what this means... Established players we have recruited in recent years: Vince (2013) Garlett (2014) Melksham (2015) Hibberd (2016) Lewis (2016) Lever (2017) May (2018) All of these are / have been walk-up starts to our best 22 and have made a 'significant improvement to the team'. There's a B&F winner and multiple All Australian squad members. Add Langdon (likely), Tomlinson (likely) and Elliot (50/50) and our recruitment of established senior players has been quite strong.7 points

Go ahead and bag Goodwin all you like but to say he had no Plan B is total horse sh*t. If you took any notice this year - and you might be forgiven for ceasing to pay attention - you'd have seen that we changed our game style completely mid-season.The manic running, play on at all cost through the corridor (for which we did not have the skills to execute) was abandoned for a slower, more deliberative controlled play. If that is not a Plan B, what is?7 points

Mate, if he hasn't learnt the skills and decision making during his 8 years on two AFL lists, when are we hoping he does learn? After he's signed a big chunky contract with us? That'd be right. You're inconsistent, mate. You're constantly saying we're bent over and here you are, standing in a metaphorical park, waiting for a metaphorical rogering.7 points

I see that Tomlinson rated 19th for all player stats in his Prelim... and better than 14 players in GF by the same measure. A lot of sense has been expressed here about his likely influence at MFC, however, he was quite a way from being the least effective player in his two most recent finals.7 points

Nah, I'm sorry mate. The comparison is ridiculous because one played 7 games in two years before being traded and the other has played 139 (including 24 games each season for the last three seasons) across 8 seasons. So one (the guy we're going after) was seen fit to last 8 years on GWS' overly talented list until he finally left as a FA. Meanwhile, your comparative player lasted two years. Laughable. And I've never said I'm a big Tomlinson fan, I'm just not going to compare him to [censored] Kristian Jaksch. FWIW, I was very wrong on Jake Melksham, so I will reserve judgement on Tomlinson until I've seen him play a year or two with us. Even Melksham was ordinary in his first year with us, until he moved forward.7 points

So little idea... Not all players can be elite (by definition) but that doesn’t discount a player from being a good fit for your system and filling a key role.7 points

He really turned around Fitzpatrick!! Scully kicking has “improved” out of site under Clarko too...6 points

Maybe it’s more like an “angry old men yelling at clouds” site. Same names, some complaints yet different topic. and before you tee-off on me I am also (relatively) old, a long time member who is angry about MFC and 2019. Just don’t feel the need to keep harping on about the same problems day after day.6 points

The same posters who argue Tomlinson is no longer in GWS' best 22 and/or is surplus to their needs. The same posters who then argue we should target Richmond's depth (i.e. players who aren't in their best 22 and, in the cases of Butler and McIntosh, have been pushed out since 2017 by other players, exhibiting something of a downwards trajectory).6 points

Not trade related. But Brayshaw wasn't played in the middle all year because he had back issues.6 points

Tom Browne just said that he still thinks we are still in pole position to get Elliot on a 3 year deal.6 points

Keep a close on this name. We have showed real interest on the 186cm half forward from Subiaco who's kicked 60 goals for the year including a big bag of 6 on grand final day the other week.5 points

Just an observation, anyone can have a whinge about something, it’s a different story altogether coming up with a solution. We need to fill spots on our list, Tomlinson is free and we can’t fill all the spots with draft picks. Not one poster who is unhappy with the (potential) recruiting of Tomlinson can offer an actual solution (keeping in mind he is free). Note: He’s a hell of a lot cheaper than what Frost’s asking price is.5 points
-
I think he could potentially become our Tom Lynch (Crows) and link up the ground and kick the ball inside 50. could help our inside 50's quite a lot5 points

Pace & a game plan to utilise pace is what has been 'killing us' & stated by our esteemed coach on a number of occassions. Please tell me where Tomlinson can improve our list? Langdon I understand, but I'm not sure the Dees need anymore overpaid turtles. The Tomlinson suggestion astounds me & I would go with Frosty everytime.5 points
-
Frost has been a good servant and has shown incremental improvement since we traded him in. That said, if we bring in Tomlinson as FA at no cost and trade out Frosty for a second rounder we’re in front.5 points

Classic Demonland to say he's a crap player because he was no good or "went missing" today. The entire GWS side went missing. No point judging him on today. Tomlinson is a role player. He has little x-factor, but he's versatile, fit, hard working and consistent. For "free" (as in, as a free agent), I'm fine with taking him, but only if his salary reflects the fact that he's a role player (i.e. he shouldn't be on big coin, at all).5 points

That's not a solution. That's a shopping list. I presume you want a fast runners who can kick. Off the top of your head who is avaible tbat meets that criteria?4 points

Worth noting Toby has been estranged from his father for years. Hardly a 'family'.4 points

So who do you suggest going after instead as doing nothing is going backwards, he will be a best 22 won’t cost picks and would command no more than a modest contract. If it’s a matter of him or frost I’d take him, he offers more utility round the ground and if our backline is fit frost wouldn’t be in the 22 imo as it is rare you need a permanent 3rd tall in the backline these days. A best 22 over a backup is the no brainer on that case4 points
-
Look, he might be a freebie, but he's not the best pick up for our needs We need lightning quick outside mids and small forwards4 points
-
That's not right. You have talent, or you don't, you don't learn it. It can be honed, so as to be used in the best way, but you can't teach talent. If you could, we would grab anyone and teach them how to be an AFL footballer.4 points
-
I reckon he doesn’t have the football smarts to become a gun, he’s a limited footballer. The best he’ll do is possibly play under a better coach and for a better team which may see him become less erratic. Time will tell.4 points
-
South Freo used him off HBF and never got the best out of him, the move to Subiaco exposed him to the professionalism of Jarrod Schofield and become a mid/forward and a more permanent forward. Sokol is a Fritsch type player, with good skills4 points

"Going fishing" is a nice idea, but what you're advocating is that instead of targeting players who are available, we instead speculatively see if contracted players want to jump ship. Of course, you have no idea whether the club is or isn't asking the question (or at least will start asking the question now that Richmond's season is over). But if your best argument against taking Tomlinson is that we should instead be "going fishing", I think you need better arguments.4 points

We have to replace the players we’ve already delisted and there’ll be more who leave. Since we can’t replace them all from the draft, who would you bring in that we don’t have to trade for JR?4 points

Not only would I have recruited him but have the ability to handle and mentor him.4 points
-
Hey DD. Well I would have recruited pickett and personally had the ability to handle him. I would have had Nic nat over Watts, would never have fallen for all the other recruiters bluff with Scully and Trengove, just one of the two small men. One look at Toumpas was enough to see nothing. Tyson and Salem was a no again. And its a no to Thomlinson in our hour of need for speed, skill and creativity with the ball. And I would definetely not fallen for Goodwins cheat sheets at interview. Does he mentor Greta Thunberg.4 points

We haven't been bold enough with our recruiting since the Jurrah saga. Continue to play it safe with private school boys instead. Sydney Stack, Marlion Pickett, Liam Ryan are just perfect examples who we've had the opportunity to select.4 points
-
Stop making sense, mate. It doesn't suit this thread. For free, he is a good get for our side. If we were giving up, say, a second round pick then I would have some concern, but that isn't the case. We also have no idea of the $$$$ we are offering, so until that is given as fact, it's useless getting upset over it.4 points

700 odd players in the AFL and yet Goody and Co send out the call. " Go get me Tomlinson' Should be sacked for that alone.4 points
-
Tomlinson is a versatile role player because he really doesn't play that well anywhere. I know why he picked us but for the life of me I don't understand why we chased him. My opinion has been consistent on him over the years every time his name has come up. The clubs position has changed from no interest to signing him. Why? He offers us nothing that we need. He has no leg speed, he doesn't' make great decisions or use the ball well & he's not a class small, medium or tall forward. ...and he's going to take up cap space that could be better used.4 points
