Match committee are starting to really lose me with team selections The best few weeks grimes has had for a looong time and he gets dropped yet m jones and Howe hold their spots11 points

Some of the comments etc re King are the reasons I have stopped contributing on here He is a 19yr old ruckman/forward, we have the opportunity to build him from the ground up I have spoken to the coaches, he hasn't got the physique just yet to compete against the ruckman he would come up against in the seniors at VFL level, he needs at least another year They are playing him as a forward as he is a good kick, as can be seen from his consistent goalvscoring up to now, because we have had fit ruckmen, the thinking is he gets more game time in the Development league at the moment They will obviously assess his progress at the end of the year, just at the moment they are more than happy with his development11 points

Inside mid has great vision and loves kicking the ball low and flat to clear it out of packs. Decent size his body is probably ready, maybe only question would be leg speed at afl level bit hard to tell as all his balls are won in close. 21 second half posessions today easily his best game, he read both Ruckman really well when they took over in the second half. Will they give gone a game against the saints? He'd be more comfortable than billy was but perhaps patience and a couple more games of that standard would give selectors no choice. Very impressive game9 points

Back into the side immediately.ANB could join him. ^You can add Viv Michie and ANB's mate Billy Stretch into that lot while Scorpion player Ed Morris was fantastic today as well.8 points

Baffling selections. Probably the worst of the year. How the hell Watts and Jones keep their spot ahead of Grimes is completely and utterly disgraceful. Even i would rather a half fit Tyson then Matt Jones. I reckon Grimes will be absolutely filthy when softcocks like Watts and Howe are continuing being gifted games and putting in half ass efforts while Grimes who busts his ass every week gets bent over. What a joke.7 points

I'm whispering that while it's very sad for Judd to cop an injury like this one, I would prefer not to see him at the club. I don't really like him and I don't like the way he conducted himself when he came across from West Coast to Victoria. He treated our club with disdain with the way in which he deigned to give the club an audience as one of his four preferred clubs when in fact, it appeared that he had already made his decision. Moreover, I don't believe his personality is suited to a role at a young club like ours.6 points

I expect M Jones will be the sub. Grimes not getting a game ahead of Howe for me is sending the wrong message completely.6 points

Grimes is out and Matt Jones is still in. Ridiculous team selection again from Roos.6 points

For the life of me I do not see his value to the team. So that means Grimes is the emergency or he is injured? I am not a big fan but I reckon he is hardly done by this weekend.5 points

One of the problems in any decision making process is the bias (recognised or unconscious) that people bring to the table. Because these things are open to interpretation, what one person may provide as evidence another will dismiss as irrelevant or ambiguous - particularly if it doesn't fit with their concept of what's happening. As a starting point I took it on faith that what Roos is saying is what is happening, some think he's simply making excuses to cover for his own poor performances. I disagree. Firstly he wouldn't have taken on the job if he was worried about win loss ratios because we were very, very bad when he came (i.e. he doesn't need to resort to excuses, just identify the problem). Secondly he's only here to put the train back on the tracks, it will be Goodwin's job to get it moving and finally because I think the principle of occams razor applies here. There's no conspiracy - what isn't fitting is the expectation that many supporters have of how the script should be playing out. Simply because you identify a problem doesn't mean it can be fixed immediately, it can be a slow complex process. As for a demonstration of the good versus the poor, I think someone who attends games could probably provide a better oversight because it's hard to pick up structures on T.V. (I live in Canberra - so only see about 1 match a season live), but let me provide a couple of examples. When Watts marks the ball you can see him scanning to see if players are replicating the training structures, the fact that he's has to motion with his hands for someone to lead into space is often an indicator that they're not. For whatever faults Jack may have he's a clever footballer and you can see at various stages players aren't doing what they're supposed to. Why? Have the players stopped working or are they too frightened to get separation on their opponent waiting for the inevitable turnover, are they simply scared and waiting for someone else to make a mistake rather than themselves? I suspect it's probably a combination of those things, but rarely do you see good teams when they have the ball have to wait and wait for options to present themselves. I was unfortunate enough to be at the GWS game and we were lucky in that GWS were poor in the first quarter which helped us. They turned this around in the second quarter, but we were able to at least stick to some of our structures and put on scoreboard pressure, where we lost it completely in the third was because we simply couldn't win the ball- Jones (unsighted& probably injured) Viney (injured) Tyson(poor game) and Vince (underdone) didn't get their hands on it and when they did you could visibly see that players had gone into their shells, they were unwilling to run into space to create options. When the opposition had the ball they did what they regularly did before Roos arrived, trailed 2 meters behind their direct opponent and seemed surprised when their opponent got the ball. They failed to close down space (though keep in mind GWS kicked some really arsey goals which I think mentally reinforced amongst our players that we couldn't beat them). Teams like Hawthorn (Port game) and Freo (Richmond) might have the opposition jump them, but they stick to their structures and work their way back into the game because they know they work (they also have the skill set to back it up). It's a bit of a catch 22 because I still think we lack some core skill sets to ensure that we can build confidence in the structures, but we are much better placed in this regard than we were 18 months ago.5 points

Normally I can see where Roos is coming from with his team selections, but dropping Grimes and keeping M. Jones completely baffles me. Ridiculous stuff.4 points

I like King, he kicked a nice goal in the NAB Cup 2014, looked a nice mover for a 200cm bloke. Has all the time in the world to put some muscle on. Definitely worth persevering with.4 points

Demonland of 2015 really has got this new fascination - other teams 'going past us'. The Dogs 'went past us' when they beat Sydney. Then we beat them. St Kilda 'went pas us' when they beat the Dogs. Never mind they lost to Carlton. Carlton made finals 2009-2011 and 2013. Must have 'gone past us' through those years, right? Brisbane beat Port a fortnight ago, I guess they 'went past us', whilst Gold Coast nearly made the eight last year, did they 'go past us' last year? I'm happy to focus on the problems in our backyard, and there are plenty, but ironically one of those problems is our pessimistic, over-the-top focus on losing (players and supporters both guilty). Let's stop the weekly 'X has gone past us, woe is us, we're all doomed, we're all [censored]' and focus on improving our performances (which, despite what some want to say to make things sound more dire, is impacted by our fixture to date).4 points

I quite agree. And we talk about their win over North being something remarkable, when North is currently sitting in the bottom 6 on the ladder. So they have only beaten bottom 6 sides, and Essendon (currently playing like a bottom 6 side). Obviously, then, if we play like a bottom 6 side then it's game over. But if we bring the same intensity that we did vs GC, WB, Richmond, the first half against Port, the first half against GWS, and the first quarter against Adelaide, and we sustain it all day, then I can easily see us winning this game. Collingwood aren't anywhere near as good as their 6-3 record suggests.4 points

One thing we can rely upon from Matt Jones is that he will manage to somehow trip, tackle high and push in the back an opponent all at the same time.3 points

What annoys me most is that guys like Watts and Howe aren't punished for poor performances but Grimes isn't rewarded for good form. It's seriously baffling. As for Matt Jones, he's in the team for that small defensive forward role. Fair to say we are all waiting the return of JHK and Kent with baited breath!3 points

M Jones been playing as a defensive fwd, he has beat his man the lat 2 weeks, played his part in the team and followed instruction. Grimes got hammered by his immediate opponent all day last week Open your eyes and have a proper look!3 points

O mac was terrific down back. And although they didn't have a heap of it, stretch and Harmes looked very calm and composed when they did have the opportunity. A few questionable umpiring decisions but it was a great game.3 points

For the kid to get 34 disposals at this level is outstanding. I think Jimmy Magner got more than 50 touches in his final year but that was against the now defunct Bendigo Gold in a 100 point plus whipping *For those who don't know about him, he's one of those hard nosed midfield extractors who goes well at the clearances. He might come in handy when he's ready (which shouldn't be too far off). * yes, I know I'm setting myself up for a comeback from BBO3 points

The difference between us and Richmond is that they retain their confidence after a win, play some good footy until they get ahead of themselves and crash back to earth. After a win our confidence only lasts until the next opposition run on.3 points

Rjay, Hogan, is 10+ kg heavier than King but ~5 cm shorter. He is also a year older, has had an extra season and preseason on the list and was touted as a potential pick 1. I think that statement applies to the tall skinny types, which King is, rather than the ready to go man children. Putting it in perspective at the start of the year, Spencer played ruck and Gawn played ruck/forward for Casey. So where could King, as a lanky 200 cm ruck/forward play? Then Jamar went back and still Casey already had two rucks. King has obviously performed at development league level where he had kicked 14 goals in 5 games to be leading the competition goal kicking and been named in the best 3 times. I agree he wants some games at VFL level and that's why I'm asking if someone who had seen him a bit this year thinks he is kicking goals due to playing well or just due to being tall. If he takes two more years to make his AFL debut I'm not fussed, as long as he continues to improve in that time.3 points

OD you are quite right plus I'm pretty confidant Australia doesn't have an extradition treaty with Switzerland anyway. However WADA don't have to do this as they can subpoena them and if they fail to turn up they would have committed a criminal offence with jail terms. They would be put on an Interpol watch list and arrested anywhere in Europe and other countries with extradition treaties with Switzerland. They couldn't go to the States as this would create a criminal record. CAS has already indicated evidence can be given by video link so they don't have to physically travel there. All in all that is a lot of reasons for them to give evidence if they are subpoenaed.3 points

I disagree that Jamar is clearly our best ruckman, unless the only thing you are considering in that rating is the hit out count. In the last 3 weeks I reckon I've seen Spencer do more positive things around the ground than I've seen Jamar do in the past 12 months. Spencer takes the game on, isn't afraid to kick the ball when he has it, and tackles, blocks and harasses at stoppages. If Jamar did that he would be clearly our best ruck.2 points

No his not.If he was clearly our best ruckman he would be playing on Monday. wins a number centre taps to his feet. Does bugger all around the ground, nil marks nil scores. Low level agression. Over hill and will be gone next year. He is not the present or the future. He has had a good long run at the MFC but he is now at the end.2 points

It's not worth wasting breath over this point of LU's. Even if he is right and other clubs have been guilty, he is like a driver caught doing 150km/hr in a 40km/hr zone who tries to excuse himself by pointing to the drivers who were going 42km/hr.2 points

Robbie13 i tend to agree in the main. It cant come to the point where one transgressor can effectively hold all to ransom. " oh cant be rid of us lest all others suffer" Whether footy or anything this cant be the case. You treat cancer by its eradication. Essendons original crime followed by its belligerent disregard for all is nothing if not a cancer on this sport let alone society in general. If EFC falls it falls...if it morphs into newEfc ..so be it. It amuses me so many apologists would hide behind technicalities never taking ownership of the deeds in question. Perhaps less than ten left after this year. Lack of leadership was identified early by Neeld. Fortunately the younger brigade of McDonald, Brayshaw, Hogan, Salem etc have it in spades... helps that they can play a bit as well. I've spent a lot of time developing training for the management of critical incidents particularly around decision making and its a very difficult area. Firstly intuition and instinct are two separate things, but you are right in that both apply equally in terms of football. Instinct can't be taught, you are born with it and in a football sense its about the relationship of the player's physical abilities in relation to their environment, so high degree of knowledge and confidence in their physical abilities, peripheral vision, spatial awareness etc are all part of that package. Having an extremely high degree of this (like a Gary Ablett Snr and Jnr) mean that regardless of the team structures you can work your way through most situations and look good. Its also handy because it happens automatically - cognition happens so quickly we can't stop it. Conversely intuition must be learnt, because intuition is recognition. This can also happen automatically, but the results are dependent on perception and like poor instinctive qualities (i.e. having no spatial awareness) can lead to 'suboptimal' results. Klein talks about this as Recognition Primed Decision-making (RPD). But it can have both good and bad results depending on your experience and 'programming'. Coaches develop training drills, based on the game plan and structures they want their players to adhere to. In this way they try to instil a certain level of automaticity into their responses. In effect they are trying to mimic instinct to a certain extent -at least in terms of successful outcomes by developing greater situational awareness than your opponent through predictability and control (execution of skill is something else altogether). Roos made a very poignant observation in his post match conference he mentioned that players weren't adhering to the structures... when we did we were 6 goals up and when one player broke from the regime to go and help a teammate in trouble and so the next player does it and so on and then you have no structure at all and you end up getting belted. He followed this up on Monday night by saying that the coaching department knew what was going wrong and why, but he wouldn't elaborate on it other than the stuff he's said before about mental scarring and list changes etc. What tends to happen in periods of stress like in the Port Adelaide & GWS games when the opposition stop playing one way and start playing another, is that the dominant heuristics (the cognitive shortcuts we develop over time) and automaticity comes to the fore (particularly if they are the easier ones to perform). I refer to this in the training environment as a form of regression - rather than people attending to the priority task that they need to (and is often complicated and hard) they will do the task that is familiar and comfortable because that offers them the greatest individual chance of success irregardless of its benefit to the team. I don't think Roos is making excuses, I think we have so many ingrained bad habits in players that they simply regress to previous form -RPD - something that was either endorsed or tolerated/ignored by previous coaching regimes. Which leads onto a debate about changing coaches...Too often its the cart before the horse in the way clubs go about this. The club should decide on a playing style, philosophy that entire club buys into, and then you find a senior coach that supports that, rather than simply changing direction every two or three years... like Richmond used to do and we have done.2 points

I hope the final bench is Brayshaw, Grimes, Toumpas, Michie (sub). McDonald to Cloke, Fitzpatick to White and Dunn to kick torpedoes from the goal square.2 points
