Little piece in the Hun. Apparently the wife of a central figure in the Bombers situation, told a fellow passenger on a plane, that the ASADA case presented to the AFL Tribunal was strong and that they are in trouble. Just realized that?6 points

I have been living up here in Rockhampton for the past 3 years and still maintain my full membership. I just donate my membership to the Reach foundation. I feel sorry for the poor souls during the MN years, the pain I bestowed on them on accepting my gift. Go Dees4 points

Makes sense but is completely wrong. The reason Toumpas was taken is he was rated by all the experts as a higher rated player than Wines - that simple. Even young Viney is on record prior to the draft when asked who he would take without hesitation said Toumpas. There has been numerous debates around whether picking the "higher rated" is the way to go. Toumpas may or may not turn out to be good as Wines. As is stands today and now - this is one more example of a lower rated player shining brighter than his more highly fancied draft picks.4 points

I think the important thing to understand here is that neither ASADA nor WADA feel they owe Essendon and the AFL any favours. In fact quite the opposite. At the top of both organisations it is fair to say they are ropable as to the arrogance of this major Australian sport, and they are determined to ensure they get their just deserts. That means full penalties. ASADA stopped talking to Essendon around the time Hird took them to court . No communication about discounted sentences has occurred since then basically because ASADA says "they have done their dash and if they won't co-operate with us neither will we do them any favours".Basically I believe they will stick to the letter of the law and date any penalties from the days of the handing down of sentences without any discounts. This i believe will be followed by a case mounted against Hird. He will get life. I hasten to add though this will not come from the AFL Tribunal. Under intense pressure from a variety of vested interests, not least the ABBOTT government desperately trying to make itself popular, they will hand down backdated 6 month penalties to the end of last season, and all Essendon and their tame lackies in the media will say is "I told you so". Within weeks WADA will have taken them to CAS and the above penalties will come out. Then there is Worksafe......it has years to run. It is a measure of the desperation of these people that their acolytes in the Press have just started to float the idea that the AFL should renounce their signing up for the WADA charter. This is about the only way they will get out of this mess. Given the proclivities of the powerful vested interests involved in this, it would not surprise me if they are seriously looking at if this is possible, but it would be about as stupid as Abbott's knighting of Prince Phillip but be 100 times more damaging and would make us not only the laughing stock of the Commonwealth, but of the entire sporting world. Interesting to note, the new State Governor is an AFL Commissioner, a senior judge, AND an Essendon fanatic, and was appointed by the Victorian Premier, also an Essendon tragic as is the global head of News Limited. The EFC have some very powerful people backing them on both sides of politics, and will be examining every angle to try and wiggle their way out of this. Fortunately, WADA has ultimate say, no matter how much the Anglo-Australian establishment might wish otherwise.4 points

The misery Demons fans wallow in is well-founded given the last 8 years of results, but far out... it's time to move on! Do you see every other club that passed on Wines wallowing in their own pity every time this kid takes another step forward? Be happy for a great young man making his mark on the game. Port have experienced a rags to riches story we all hope Melbourne can replicate, but the longer we dwell on the past the harder it is to look forward to a bright future. Lamenting the past achieves nothing. You can't do anything about it, so be proactive about what you can control, what you can change. I'm yet to see a single trade or draftee since Roos came onboard that hasn't been a raging success.3 points

from Titus O'Reily Colin Sylvia and Ross Lyon have a little chat Ross Lyon: Come in Colin, have a seat. Colin Sylvia: You want a chicken nugget boss? Lyon: It’s 11.00. Sylvia: I know, breakfast menu was over. Lyon: Colin, I’m sending you down to the Peel Thunder. Sylvia: Is that a night club? Lyon: No, it’s in the WAFL. Your lack of professionalism is something I simply can’t accept here at Freo. Sylvia (chicken nugget spraying from his mouth): What are you talking about? Name one time I haven’t been professional, not counting last year. Lyon: Yesterday you didn’t finish the time trial. I found you drinking a thick shake under a tree. Sylvia: In fairness boss, I was pretty hung over yesterday. Lyon: That doesn’t exactly help your cause Colin. Sylvia: I’d argue with you but it seems like a lot of effort and I’m pretty tired. Lyon: Well enjoy the Peel Thunder. Some players have used a situation like this to come back reenergised. Sylvia: Yeah, I’m not doing that. Lyon: I know Colin, I know3 points

ASADA doesn't have to leak or mount expensive PR programmes because their case is so strong. There has been very little grandstanding from them and have let the case speak for itself. And you know what, it is slowly dawning on the hird/essendon camp that they are doomed. The propaganda from the pro essendon press is now more along the lines of the injustice of it all now, rather than their previous approach "they will all get off with backdated sentence and will miss no matches ( they won't), and ASADA has no case (they do, a very strong one). It doesn't stop the vested interests in this though trying to operate on a political level to get thrm off. Fortunately, they are captives of international arrangements which will not allow the usual political interference to over turn just decisions. It won't stop them from trying though....2 points

I don't believe Port made an incorrect call in his leadership group inclusion. I do believe an incorrect call was made in resurrecting this thread. He's a Port player in the AFL, always has been. Get over it.2 points

This gave me a laugh - especially the last line. From Titus O'Reilly Essendon Football Club: Casual vacancies available The Essendon Football Club currently has approximately 20 vacancies for the position of ‘AFL footballer’. This is an exciting opportunity for anyone who has ever dreamed of playing at the highest-level but couldn’t because they were terrible at football. The ideal candidate must be somewhat in shape and have the necessary skills to match it with St Kilda, GWS and Melbourne (not a huge ask). This once in a lifetime opportunity will see you play on the hallowed turf of Etihad Stadium, Spotless Stadium and Morwell Recreational Reserve. Prior experience in the VFL, WAFL, SANFL or Auskick will be looked upon favourably. Uniforms, meals and legal fees will be provided but the successful candidates must provide their own boots. A willingness to work with James Hird is a must. Please, no ASADA employees or Cale Mortons2 points

And, relevantly, three of our more skilled players who probably don't require the skills training as much as some others on our list. It's genuinely hard to nail our best 22 without omitting some required players. Have to go back to about 10 years since we were last in this situation. I'm pumped.2 points

yes..youre right ET but that which RM alludes to is also fairly close to it . The essence is that the evidence satisfies the Tribunal. the Anti doping policy extract is but a homage to its originator in the WADA code , that being ( homage in so much as all signatory codes will fall in line with the WADA code ) 3.1 Burdens and Standards of Proof The Anti-Doping Organization shall have the burden of establishing that an anti-doping rule violation has occurred. The standard of proof shall be whether the Anti-Doping Organization has established an antidoping rule violation to the comfortable satisfaction of the hearing panel bearing in mind the seriousness of the allegation which is made. This standard of proof in all cases is greater than a mere balance of probability but less than proof beyond a reasonable doubt. Where the Code places the burden of proof upon the Athlete or other Person alleged to have committed an anti-doping rule violation to rebut a presumption or establish specified facts or circumstances, the standard of proof shall be by a balance of probability, except as provided in Articles 10.4 and 10.6 where the Athlete must satisfy a higher burden of proof. heres the referenced articles: 10.4 Elimination or Reduction of the Period of Ineligibility for Specified Substances under Specific Circumstances Where an Athlete or other Person can establish how a Specified Substance entered his or her body or came into his or her Possession and that such Specified Substance was not intended to enhance the Athlete’s sport performance or mask the Use of a performance-enhancing substance, the period of Ineligibility found in Article 10.2 shall be replaced with the following: ( I'll leave off this bit...goes of for a while ) 10.6 Aggravating Circumstances Which May Increase the Period of Ineligibility If the Anti-Doping Organization establishes in an individual case involving an anti-doping rule violation other than violations under Articles 2.7 (Trafficking or Attempted Trafficking) and 2.8 (Administration or Attempted Administration) that aggravating circumstances are present which justify the imposition of a period of Ineligibility greater than the standard sanction, then the period of Ineligibility otherwise applicable shall be increased up to a maximum of four (4) years unless the Athlete or other Person can prove to the comfortable satisfaction of the hearing panel that he or she did not knowingly commit the anti-doping rule violation. An Athlete or other Person can avoid the application of this Article by admitting the anti-doping rule violation as asserted promptly after being confronted with the antidoping rule violation by an Anti-Doping Organization. Apologise for the long windedness of that but its the Code !! Elements to take out of it are ( to me ) Only need to satisfy the hearing panel. The pivot is actually Balance of Probability , and it's beholding upon the athlete to PROVE what he purports as the event and not for the Tribunal to prove its allegation. This I think is something glossed over or deliberately ignored or obfuscated by many of the essendon fan club. The ATHLETE has to show what happened as they would have it. If they can not then they will be stamped guilty immediately. Further WADA does not like it, not one iota , when athletes or teams or anyone in between decide to take the route that Essendon has. hence the provision for "Aggravated Circumstances" it would not surprise me a bit if should the Tribunals finding be anything less than 2 years that this will get ugly beyond anything imagined to date. But the thing , the essential thing to always remember about this is the ATHLETE has to provide proof, to a level of probability that what is alleged did not happen. good luck with that ...lol2 points

And this from the comments section tops it all off: PeterMax 51 minutes ago I still have seen nothing to convince me that this attack on James Hird and Essendon was anything but a very dishonourable tactic by Labor, as presented by Jason Clare and Kate Lundy to divert attention from the woes of Julia Gillard. If this can be proved it is to be hoped that action for compensation can be launched against Labor for serious and unforgivable damage to Essendon and Hird FMD!!2 points

The AFL will no doubt have a contingency plan in the event of Essendon forfeiting - the NAB Challenge programme can surely be rejigged to ensure that every team gets at least three of these games in before the start of the season. It's interesting that Essendon was drawn to play their three NAB Challenge games against St. Kilda, Melbourne and GWS who finished 18th, 17th and 16th respectively in 2014. I simply cannot believe that it just happened at random that a club under the pump like Essendon would receive that sort of draw in their circumstances.2 points

Technically incorrect. Section 7.1 Anti-Doping policy (ASC) States that the standard of proof is greater than a mere balance of probability but less than proof beyond reasonable doubt. Somewhere in between the two it would seem.1 point

One of my children did a placement with the Royal Flying Doctor Service in remote outback Australia Educational and pretty sad - The lack of fresh fruit and vegetables, most Aboriginal children anaemic, lack of running water ( no surprise) compromises hygiene levels. In the major cities we expect access to fresh produce - a dream in some places supposedly a lot of money finds its way into aboriginal health programs - I always thought that some effort should be made to supply what we enjoy as an expectation to those far far away. Naive perhaps, but I deep down expected ATSIC when it was alive to make this a goal. Instead what is available is milk out of date and food deep-fried (talking about remote communities) The lack of water leads to a host of other problems.1 point

Haha, yes it's very possible our paths did cross in that case. I was there in 1972 and did spend an inordinate amount of time in the caf. I used to hang around with the likes of Steve Cummings, a guy named John Smith (yes, real name) who was an excellent harmonica player, Brendan Ryan who was from Bendigo (may have been a general studies student) and another guy named Brad (can't recall any other name) who may have been an engineering student who was a bit of a space cadet. I also worked a lot on SCRAG (Swinburne College Rag) doing illustrations... it was edited by a person named Kelvin Gedyes who the last time I ran into him, was sound mixing for Circus Oz. At that time half of Madder Lake were studying there as well as people like Greg McAinsch (sp?) of Skyhooks fame (they were Film & TV students who were the next rung up the "ladder of importance". That was when I joined my first band (the bass player was in my class) called Poltergeist who were based in Altona/Yarraville... we did a whole bunch of originals as well as covers of songs by bands like Atomic Rooster, Edgar Broughton Band and so on. They were good times... in fact, for the first semester of 1972, my Psychology of Perception teacher was David Williamson... he left after that time because his play The Removalists had just won some big award in New York and so he decided to go full time with his writing.1 point

So it finally dawned on me why the club trained at Casey Fields today. It was the first leg of the two day AFL Community Camp to Leongatha and Wonthaggi (February 11-12). According to Twitter the boys moved on to Tarwin Football Club for a training session with Gippsland Power Under 15s. Players were also at Meeniyan Dumbalk United with Daniel Cross taking the handballing drill. Tonight, Nathan Jones spoke to the audience at a function at the Wonthaggi Workmen's Club. Christian Petracca and Angus Brayshaw spoke about their goals for footy and their future in the AFL at the AFL Gippsland Official Function. If anyone attended any of the above, you can post about it here.1 point
