KPP who featured in the top 5-10 of their draft year: 2006 - Gumbleton, Hansen and Leuenberger 2007 - Kreuzer, Grant(not sure if he played kp during 18's), Henderson 2008 - Watts, Naitanui and Hurley 2009 - John Butcher (slid to 8 after being touted as a number one pick during the year 2010 - Sam Day 2011 - Patton, Haynes and Longer 2012 - Plowman and Daniher 2013 - Boyd and Kolodjashnij The forwards of that crop of KPP: Gumbleton Hansen Henderson Watts Butcher Day Patton Haynes Daniher Boyd Bar Boyd, Daniher, Haynes and Patton (due to it being too early to tell), the rest of that group of forwards have been underwhelming to say the least as KP forwards. Day, Watts, Henderson and Hansen all started as forwards but haven't performed well enough as forwards at AFL level so they play different positions now. Gumbleton was a flop and Butcher is a great example of a KP forward who can't kick. The reason I am super cautious of drafting someone like McCartin is precisely to do with the list I've just provided. In isolation, each of the KPP mentioned in those draft years were 'talked up'. McCartin is one of three KPP in this draft who is highly rated. A full forward who's weakness is to execute the very thing forwards need to do. Kick goals. The MFC nearly broke an AFL record this year for inside 50 deferentials. And that's got nothing to do with our forwardline. Myself and other MFC supporters have every right not to be as impressed by McCartin as 'experts' of the draft. I'll back my judgement. And I'm telling you now, I want two mids.9 points

We should have had the players sign waivers with a non disclosure clause. That seems to do the trick with the AFLPA ...8 points

Saw them on the park this morning. Checked with a friend at the club who told me it was voluntary on the players part with first session starting next week for the younger players. Older blokes and rehab will start later. Forget AFLPA as this was voluntary and I applaud the players keen enough to start ball work so soon.7 points

Moneider96 has summed it up nicely. I keep a low profile around here these days, although I read several times a day. Mark Neeld is a quality person who gave senior AFL coaching his best shot but it didn't come off at the Dees. He was held responsible for the failings of many because the buck stops with the cocker. However, the insane hatred expressed by several present on these boards has been unwarranted. His rise part way from the depths (that he must have visited) is a tribute to his resilience and spirit. I hope he experiences great success in his new role at the Bombers. I respect him and, even at this late stage, thank him for what he tried to achieve at our club. I don't see myself as a supporter of all things Neeld; I just see myself as a more reasonable and educated football fan than those who burden us with their warped brand of scapegoatism.7 points

Ok. I never post anything intel wise unless I think the source is relatively well connected and this one is so here go's - 1. The saints aren't going tall as I will explain in point 2. Petracca is a near lock but they have not ruled out taking Brayshaw. 2. They are looking at Mckernan on the cheap as a no risk high pick option with plenty of upside. The reason they aren't going tall with early picks is that they are targeting talls coming out of contract and free agents over the next 2-3 years(poaching). He specifically mentioned Jeremy Cameron. This person knows Jacob Townsend who is Camerons flat mate. Apparently Cameron is extremely homesick but wants to do the right thing and see out his contract which ends after next season. Apparently loves the club but only a near miracle will stop him from wanting to come home. Saints are going hard for him and will have the war chest ready with Reiwoldt close to retiring.5 points

really excited to hear that Jordie McKenzie and Michael Evans are out on the track and by excited I mean in a state of shock that they are still on our list5 points

I like the look of this kid. So expect us to pick him, and for him to float around doing SFA for years and polarising supporters.5 points

Big Jim Terry Wallace did a review of the top 10 draftees from 2000 to 2010 during the year and broke up the selections into inside mids, outsiders/Flankers and talls if I remember correctly. He found the success rate of the inside mids was around 75 to 80%, they went on to play 100 games plus. The outsiders and talls were around the 30 to 40% success rate. It makes some sense as highly rated inside mids are likely to be aggressive, physically ready and have probably captained their underage sides and developed leadership skills. There will always be X factor talent with the others, eg Rioli, but it is harder to get right.4 points

What many here fail to realize is that it was the MFC's failure when Neeld was appointed, not Mark's. Neeld had applied and failed to get many senior coaching positions (Richmond, PA, Adelaide) but got ours because we failed to conduct a proper interview process which would have exposed his weaknesses. But we wanted to avoid "death by powerpoint". Mark did nothing wrong and merely wanted to test himself at the highest level. And he didn't have the greatest administration backing him up and was surrounded by newbie assistant coaches in the main. I didn't like Neeld from the beginning, never struck me as a leader of men, but I wish him all the best at Essendon and beyond.4 points

The extent to which McCartin is being talked down on demonland is astounding! By the tone being taken by a lot of people, you'd think this player, who has been regarded as top two in the draft pool all year, was a complete dud! Are people actually that down on this impressive young KPP prospect? FWIW I think he looks great! Great build, great attitude, great set of hands! He is going to go top four in the draft - top five at the absolute max! Yet by the sounds of the criticism he gets on here, it'd be a miracle if he was drafted at all.3 points

Agree. Have a feeling Tappy might be delisted and then rookied like Jetta was this year. He, of all of those ooc has the most ability in my view. He's just so damn injury riddled. I hope Roos gives him one more chance and he gets a run at a full pre-season, and finds a set role to come into.3 points

Ash, if you're reading this thread...look away now: ASADA, not AFL, to lead case v Bombers The AFL has decided that ASADA will prosecute any doping cases against Essendon players at the AFL Tribunal, instead of having AFL-appointed prosecutors. (Jake Niall, The Age) ASADA boss Ben McDevitt's WADA mission could spell trouble for the AFL ASADA chief executive Ben McDevitt flew to Montreal on Saturday for meetings with WADA that could have consequences for the AFL if the judgment in the Essendon supplements case is appealed. I don't see how you can have a philosphical problem with drafting key forwards and approve of getting Hogan. How can you justify taking Hogan over Kelly and then sustain your above key forward argument. Also if a key position player graded at 9/10 and a midfielder 7/10, would you take the midfielder. Of your key position list - Haynes is a potentially elite defender, but more of a third tall, so I'm not including him. Day, Daniher, Boyd and Patton are all very good and if not salivatingly exciting prospects. Patton obviously has been cruelled by knee injury. Hansen (always more a key back prospect as well) and Henderson (good forward when used there) are undoubtedly good players. Gumbleton's career was destroyed by injury. Watts is going to play 200 games and Butcher has been the one major bust. Your list doesn't include Tomlinson either who is a good player. There is just no reason or evidence to support your theory. And where you get your views on McCartin I'd like to know, he basically kicks 4 a game and takes 8 marks. There is nothing to suggest he can't kick goals. He has struggled to do so in teams getting defeated though.2 points

I was at Edwins cafe outside aami this morning. Jetta, Hogan, Viney and one other i didn't recognise were having a coffee. On face value i really thought hogan would have been a bit of an introvert, but to my surprise he seemed to be the loudest person in the entire place (Censored he's a big boy!) I had parked across the road from the Tan and was getting out of my car at the same time as Frawley. (Gave him the cold shoulder, I'm sure he was offended!) Looking like he's dropped a bit of size but looks extremely fit à la Brian Lake2 points

My opinion is that we get Mccartin this year, to add more depth to our forward line...Because honestly... we can't rely on Hogan when we haven't even see him play a game at AFL level yet. Then next year, seeing how it's a midfielder's draft apparently, we get a few midfielders via either trade, free agency, or draft. Simple...instead of taking a MASSIVE risk on Lever.2 points

God I love Demonland.......The place where posters can argue who we will pick up in the upcoming draft after watching 2 minutes of a highlight tape I will say, that I trust the footy dept to select the right players after extensive study into said players( we seem to have the right recuiting people in place now) I have no idea who is better than who as I don't watch highlight tapes I will take an interest on draft day and hopefully we will get 2 great kids who mature into greats for this club of ours and not be compared forever with the players taken later in the draft2 points

Not sure what all the fuss is about. He spent 3 years at Western Jets. A fair bit of this year working out of Eastern Ranges. Add to that the lessons he'd have learned at both Collingwood & Melbourne I'd think he has a good background for a Development Coach. If he was appointed Senior Coach then yeah, PMSL but this seems Neeld's go. I was happy to see him get the lemonade from here when he did but we have to move on. We spend far too much time looking backwards. Have for 50 years As someone pointed out earlier, it's good to see the likes of Neeld & McCartney get a gig in the industry. Hopefully Sanderson is picked up somewhere as well. They may have had failings at the top job but they all have a wealth of knowledge to impart to players2 points

I just think key forwards are way to risky and we have been burnt before. Everything should be about the midfield and we desperately need more quality. The better quality of the mids the better the forwards will look. I'd rather establish a first class midfield then look to poach a key forward once they are a few years in so at least then we will know if they are a dust buster or not instead of rolling the dice again.2 points

Two home games we usually lose money from. So we have so far home games at the G against Gold Coast (Sat Afternoon) and Sydney (Sat Night) and two interstate teams in NT. Commercially speaking - so far, so good... Just waiting for the rest to be a hot mess of Sundays.2 points

I disliked him - intensely - because he struck me as self-absorbed and abusive. He did not treat the players in my team with respect. He made no adjustments when the team played badly and the players were unhappy. And it took a long time, with the club bleeding badly all the while, before he was removed. That's why I got fairly intense about him. Not my kind of guy. He made sport unnecessarily unpleasant for those who love it. Attack me if you like, I don't mind - I recognise other people think differently about sport and succeeding at it, and I don't say they are necessarily wrong; it's just my take on it. I see sport in a context of human relationships and endeavours, and I recognise that this equates to admitting my own bias. I'm only posting now in response to your "mystification", explaining how I at least felt. I never blamed him for other stuff like the global financial crisis, obviously - my intense dislike had very clear and specific issues with him. I wouldn't wish Neeld on anyone, no matter who admires him (but, if Essendon want him, I'm not surprised, and be it on their head if it affects them as I expect it may. If it turns out well, I will put it down to them being thugs, so that Neeld was a good fit).2 points

This is just my view on not taking a risk as the strong boys are 9 times out of 10 the safe bet with the likes of hodge, wines,Martin, cunnington and viney the safe way to go. The outside type is the cream you go for later in my view. I'm just thinking of playing safe with such high picks. Hogan was a great pick as he is a bull and I would take him over Martin in the mini draft as hogan is just a safe way to go.2 points

No. The discussion is about Neeld joining Essendon as one of their assistant coaches (development), not about Neeld's capacity as head coach. Which none of your points address - he will have no say on list managent at Essendon, for example.2 points

Give me a break guys, talk about looking in the rear-vision mirror and hitting the tree. I can tell you from a personal level, Neeld was out of his depth 1 month in at this club - he personally told me. If you think that the win/loss impact of Roos (who according to the associated avatars on this forum has more nous than any coach going around) was $equivalently different from what Mark Neeld delivered, then shoot me down. The guy had his reputation, his career and his income smashed in the experience at MFC and just for your info, he was on pretty low $. Maybe that's all he deserved I hear you saying.....get a life, move on and leave the poor bloke alone. If you want to blast me, maybe focus the replies on Lyon and co who decided he was the man for the job.
