Gives me great joy to see them suffer and continue to be as irrelevant as they were on day one. May failure follow Scully until his last days in the game.11 points

Suns paid the big bucks and got Ablett. Giants paid the big bucks and got Scully. Callan Ward is five times a better leader and player than Scully. He got duped on his salary and the Dogs got screwed with compensation.5 points

A few weeks ago after they beat us, and more impressively, Sydney - we were all lamenting the free ride they got with their concessions and how they would be a power team. They get flogged and they are a debacle on the precipice of failing as a club? Pls. The got too many kids and wasted money on the $6m man. GC did not just get kids and spent their money on the best player I have ever seen. And 'the experiment' will continue. You can howl at the moon all you like - they are not going anywhere.4 points

Scully would be a good footy player if he were still with us IMO. The pressure of the biggest contract in AFL history (at the time) has completely ruined him. Look what happened to Mitch Clark when he couldn't deliver on his massive contract. The demons (pardon the pun) start creeping in. Sure he is going to have a comfortable life, but he's really going to be remembered for all the wrong reasons. You have to be an Ablett or a Franklin to be in that pay bracket. He's not fit to carry their bags.4 points

Most of us spent all of 2011 hoping, praying, wishing Scully would stay. It's a good thing he didn't! I doubt he'd get a game for us at present, I'd rather Matt Jones and Rohan Bail.4 points

Hope they implode. Was destined to fail. It was all about Vlads ego. Wouldn't listen to advice including from Roos that it would be a hard sell. Also Sheeds has a lot to answer for. Can't say I'm sorry. The Scully decision must be biting them in the bum. What a joke he's a million dollar player. Doubt he's one of their top 5 midfielders - run with player at best with no penetration with his disposals. Gees schadenfreude I feels good.4 points

http://boundforglorynews.com/afl-bloodlines-potential-father-son-nominations/ MELBOURNE Jake Lovett (Danenong Stingrays) Son of: Brett Height: 192 cm Weight: 80 kg Position: Utility 2014 Games: 1 Draft Eligible: 2015 Melbourne fans would be salivating over the prospect of running machine, Jake Lovett. Although a different type of player to his father, Jake is a high-possession winning on-baller, with damaging disposal and has a tendency to be aggressive. Although he’s played just the one game so far, he didn’t disappoint. In round five against the Western Jets, the smooth moving live-wire was a ball magnet, running through the midfield and pushing forward at will. His line-breaking runs were of serious note, as he collected 21 disposals to match his three marks and five tackles. Oozing class, Lovett finished with a tidy disposal efficiency of 76 per cent and was named in Dandenong’s best despite a three-point loss to the Western Jets. Billy Stretch (Glenelg) Son of: Steven Height: 179 cm Weight: 70 kg Position: Wing/Half Forward Flank 2014 Games: 2 Average Stats: 10 disposals 1.5 tackles, 1 goal Draft Eligible: 2014 Known for his elite running capacity and his damaging kicking efficiency, Billy Stretch has got class in spades. His kicking efficiency ranks in the elite – and that’s off both sides. Playing for Glenelg, Stretch was selected in the three senior trial games, where he made an influence and would’ve kept his place in the side had it not been for the AIS’s tour of Europe. The good news is for Stretch, is that upon returning – he slotted straight back into the senior side against Adelaide, and finished with 10 disposals, three tackles and one goal. He’s already tasted what life at Melbourne is like, undergoing placement there for one week under the AFL-AIS program he’s apart of. The plaudits came thick and fast for Stretch who was professional, diligent and took everything the group through at him. Jake Lovett listed as 192cm? Holy crap!! An aggressive and classy 192cm midfielder who can break the lines with his pace?! [censored] me!!!!4 points

Should say: we smashed them senseless from the opening bounce to the final siren. The game against Nth was the best I've ever seen us play.3 points

I don't know Paton simply looked like he would rather be anywhere else on the planet than stuck playing for GWS. With Boyd waiting in the wings Paton might be worth having a go at as a Clarke replacement. I feel he may flourish in the right environment.3 points

How's that professional environment working out for u Scumbag? Grass isn't always greener is it pumpkin head.3 points

But, but, he's such a great trainer and so professional, so he's definitely worth the money. Hahhahahahahahahahahah, sucked in GWS3 points

Martin Flanagan has written another Demon based article. Someone can post a link as that is outside my skill set. His writing is always a wonderful read but I most like the fact that even through our darkest times he wrote about the game, it's spirit & joy (and sometime it's pain). As a kid growing up it was the excitement of a Saturday morning before the game that hooked me. I always remember an ad from the 70s or 80s (I think it was the old "football, meat pies, kangaroos & Holden cars) with the crowds leaving the train at Jolimont. All buzzing before the game. Today Martin has written about Howie. Gives him a big wrap to. The best part of this article is the acknowledgement of Howe's mark over Embley at the G early last season. We've all seen his specky's from behind against Sydney & Port (well just about everyone) but that for me was his most ridiculous (you could add the one against Footscray at Docklands late last season but that idiot boundary umpire spoilt the party by saying he didn't control it over the line). For him to have the courage to go back like that and attempt the high mark over a player coming towards him and bring it down clean as a whistle, WOW! The last 3 seasons have been very hard for all of us and I'm not quite willing to open myself up yet to the prospect of improvement (we all know where that's ended up the last few years) but while we continue to have the likes of Howe in the Red & Blue at least there is some joy. One last thing on Martin, if you get a chance to read the article he wrote after his Dad passed away you will not regret it. A few years back now.3 points

As for the direction of the club, it is building some strong foundations and appears to have enough business acumen to form a strong business model. This is something we haven't had in some time, if ever. PJ and Bartlett need to take a lot of credit for this. This will be tested/measured when AHG come up for the sponsorship renewal. If they re-sign you can bet your bottom dollar the business/personnel side of the club is resonating in the broader business community. The current list is good without being great. The difference between the top and bottom sides usually has to do with 2 thigs: 1) The bottom players in the entire list - for us Harmes, Hunt, King etc. 2) And secondly by the bottom 4 players in the best 22. Jetta, Salem (only because he is young), Byrnes, Terlich who continue to look shaky at many times during a game. But our biggest list problem is the lack of development in Strauss, Tappy, Nicho, Blease, Fitzy etc... who have been on our lst a while and keep on coming in and out of the team. I am a huge Blease fan but if this season continues as it is going, I reckon he is gone at season's end. All these players are probably going to be replaced with Michie, Riley, Jordie etc... The turn around in confidence and positivity at MFC at present is remarkable, but the work is only just beginning. We are a long way from being a strong, leading, successful club. Benchmarks for me: 40,000+ members Defeating teams in the top 8 Repeat sponsors Free agents and traded players lining up to come to MFC October 2014 - February 2015 will be a massive time for MFC. This will show how far we have come and if we are building something special.3 points

Both local dailies are going with the queries about whether Essendon's assistance to its players in covering their legal fees over the ASADA investigation comes under its salary cap - AFL refuses to say whether Essendon players’ legal fees will be included in the salary cap and Bombers seek special exemption on players' legal fees. I think the players might also need to consider how closely they should be aligned with their club if infraction notices issue. Hopefully, their legal advice will be independent because the interests of club and players might not end up in alignment. It's an unusual situation here. Should the other 17 AFL clubs help out the club which, on the face of it, appears to have tried to cheat them? They were certainly not inclined to help Melbourne out last year when the club applied for draft assistance on the back of seven years of mostly poor performances and that was four years after the alleged offence of employing someone who told jokes about winning and losing took place. On that basis the AFL should be telling Essendon not to expect any consideration whatsoever as the club has already been found guilty of poor governance over its doping programme and is likely to face further charges when ASADA finally gets its act together.3 points

Exciting. Brett Lovett was an absolute star - one of the most underrated players of the time - remember him playing in Victorian team with Lyon. Rarely beaten and rarely wasted a possie across half back - gun.3 points

You'd have to laugh at Collingwood supporters wouldn't you? I remember when the trade happened they were all saying we were delusional for trading pick 20 for him which ended up being Tim Broomhead and now with Cloke struggling, you'd know they'd like to take that back wouldn't you.2 points
-
I would say they swapped Dawes for Lynch who they brought in to play the same role. Sure, the picks don't align, but that's what they did. Hasn't exactly been a great move so far for them.2 points

Not a win-win trade until Broomhead plays a game and makes an impact. They could certainly use Dawes in their F50 atm.2 points

Since when does a senate sub committee mean anything? 1bil per 5 years or 200mil per year the AFL get for TV rights. A significant percentage of that comes from Foxtel. Rugby league viewers in Sydney own a lot of foxtel sets to watch their team play. Having 2 teams in Sydney is a significant investment to encourage fox footy viewers so they pay big money for the rights. Is it worth the 20mil per year or whatever GWS costs the AFL? Probably not quite. But the second Sydney team does add significant money to the AFL tv rights price and if the giants become popular will be worth heaps to the TV rights. TV drives the AFL economy but it's based largely on viewers in Melb, Adel and Perth. Crack the TV market in Sydney and the games value goes up massively. GWS is a massive investment which of course means risk. I'm not anti the GWS investment. But what they did do was go all in. In some ways they had to. The alternative is a Brisbane Bears fiasco that requires rebranding and an injection of cash/players to get anywhere. So the draft picks and list concessions were the way the AFL try to support their investment. I think you've overestimated Sheedy's role. Mark Williams did the majority of the coaching. Silvagni was list manager. Sheedy was figure head and publicist and part time coach. The real stuff up I think was getting Gubby Allen fresh after he derailed Brisbane with crazy Vossy via the Fev and co deals. Coming off a horrible experience with old players he went all for youth along with the inexperienced Silvagni and their draft picks were good but their list set up was horrendous. I think they desperately need to poach a new GM of footy ops from one of the strong clubs to sort the place out.2 points

http://www.afl.com.au/ladder/ladder-predictor I thought I was the only nong who played with this widget, I start off trying to be reasonable, but sooner or later my dreams get the better of me and we're beating West Coast at Paterson Stadium to sneak into the eight with 11 wins... Today after doing some good time trials while wearing my guernsey, I had us doing a lazarus into the eight, after we play Port the reality bus will probably park on top of me, but who knows. I'm honestly cannot tell if it will take 11 or 13 wins to make finals this year, the ladder is so crowded with 'thereabouts' teams from positions 14 through to 6. I'm also desperately hoping the show cause notices get dropped on Essendon the week we play them. Allthough rounds 16-20 are looking fairly ominous I could still see a win occurring in that period. Edit: Additional useless and baseless speculation added.2 points

No nothing like that, it was all about raising money and talking about the way they are going about transforming the club. They want to populate the place with people that have been involved with winning particularly winning flags. It was interesting to hear Josh Mahoney talk about his years at Port where they expect nothing but success, they just naturally assume they will finish top 4 every year and nothing else is acceptable. We have to become a club that has the same aspirations and demand success.2 points

What is with the flute in the background of the review? He is talking about improving a footy team - not defeating Sauron down at Mordor. Although if we beat Geelong down there he can keep the flute...2 points

I have 10 cases of premium beer riding on it that we won't finish in the bottom four this year. The mate with whom I have the bet was demanding delivery of the beers after round 2. He's not so cocky anymore.2 points
