The thing that sucks here is that the father/son rule is intended to get kids to clubs where their fathers played. It is designed such that clubs don't pay 'overs' for the kids of such players. With pick 3, we should be able to snag a bullet proof 10 year player for this club irrespective of the 'father/son' rule. That we may have to use pick 3 on Jack Viney makes a mockery of this rule. But, if push comes to shove, we must select him. He will captain this club one day. We're talking about a generationally important player here. If GWS or the Suns force us to use pick 3 on him, I will hate them for eternity because he is rightfully ours and they are simply playing games against the intent of the system. That said, we still have to pick him. Our new culture must have integrity, even if other clubs lack it.8 points

Jack's comments just add credence to the MFC story that we are genuinely considering not picking him at 3 if we don't think he's worth it. If Jack takes that seriously, then we're a bigger chance of Gold Coast and GWS doing the same. And if they think we're crazy enough to let the club slip and don't rate him in the top two then we're one step closer to getting him in the second round. I know there has been pages and pages about cloke and dagger dealings with the two expansion teams to encourage them not to nominate Jack but I don't think this is happening. Our strategy from day 1 has been simple - take every natural opportunity the media provides to give the impression we're genuinely weighing up Jack's value and furthermore suggest that there is a chance (albeit slim) that we'll pass on Jack if the others nominate him. All we need to do is create enough doubt in the minds of two clubs and he'll slide to the second round. The fact that supporters on this forum are unsure adds to the intended atmosphere of uncertainty. Harrington, Neeld, Schwab, T Viney and J Viney have all answered questions in the media that stress that Jack to Melbourne is not a done deal. Will it be enough to scare GC and GWS? I'm not sure but the only real problem that I can see is that Jack is so damn good that GC or GWS would be happy taking him in the top two and if that's the case, grabbing him at pick 3 will indeed be a steal. People need to relax. Jack will be at Melbourne. It's just a simple matter of whether it's pick 3 or pick 26. But seriously, continue as you are - bombard footy forums and social media sites with hysteria about Jack Viney - it all adds to the carefully constructed atmosphere of uncertainty.8 points

Who was the last premiership player we had on our list? Dual premiership player I might add. He's an exemplary character with a strong work ethic coming out of the best team in the current era. He got overtaken by young guns like Christiansen and Motlop - no shame there. He will play a role where our previous options were Davey and Bennell, and he's proven he can play that role at Flag grade. We're desperate for senior players with leadership as we seem to be in a permanent spiral of our list getting younger. He comes for free. I'm amazed people can't see the upside here. No, he's not Tippett. But if you're looking for that one player who's going to lift us above his shoulders and carry us from our current misery to glory then you're going to be spending the rest of your life disappointed.6 points

I think people will be a little bit surprised by Colin Sylvia next year. I got the feeling that in the latter parts of this year, he really bought in to what the coaches were telling him. And as another poster has pointed out, perhaps the less than stellar reception Brent Moloney has received from other clubs has shown Sylvia that Beamer's way is not the right way.5 points

Never understood why he was taken out of the middle, seeing him play forward was just weird.4 points

Not sure if it's been mentioned here before, but any club considering Wellingham needs to be mindful of the fact that he badly damaged his fringe recently, according to this report ... http://thedailymaggot.com/?p=26044 points

Unconfirmed reports that we've offered Martin, pick 3 & 4 for rounds of sandwiches.4 points

Greg Swan has confirmed that the Greg Denham's journalistic values are "utter crap". As I posted earlier there were no quotes from Carlton or Melbourne, it is simply a fantasy beatup by Denham to stir the pot that there are players left, right and centre want to leave the club. If Denham was a journalist's bootlace he would have named a source with a quote or two, instead he fantasised of Mick Malthouse's mentoring earlier in the season and tried to find a connection. If there is any further confirmation needed to not listen to him, this is it. It's actually funny now, and Swan's insistence that this story is "simply made up." (*Note Greg - this is a direct quote!)4 points

Toumpas at 3 O'Rourke at 4 Stringer at 13 Although somewhere in the Gillette Draft we may be forced to get rid of pick 13 for someone.3 points

Yeah, no mention of guys like Jones, Blease and Howe re-signing this year, even though all 3 could find new clubs in a second. Pathetic Denham at it again. He is a moron.3 points

How many minor premierships did they win before getting a flag? Hardly a fluke, especially against that lions side And I've only heard good things about Hinkley, so you aren't really hitting the mark for me I must admit...3 points

i'm only slightly embarassed to admit this is my 15th post today in this thread, and i have not posted in any other threads. I find it fascinating as a topic, if we pull this off and get him at 26, we effectively secure pick 3,4 and (arguably) 5 in the one draft. That will be one of the greatest draft pillages in history and could really set us up. Add to that the fact that one of those players is EXACTLY what we need as a true red-and-blue blood, with his former-captain Dad actually in the coaching staff and nothing but praise for the kid's character, leadership and general hard attitude. This draft could 'right the ship' that has gone off course with the disappointment of Morton, Scully and Jurrah, whom we all expected to form a key role in our resurgence as a club. Make no mistake, this is big business for the MFC.3 points

I wouldn't be disappointed if we picked him up at 4 to be honest. Stringer looks as though he is going to be a gun at the top level.3 points

Of course you are talking to me. Could have quoted what I said, instead of trying to go about it in a back handed way. You know I don't care to argue with you. Anyways, I never said I see no upside. He seems like a lovely guy, he knows what it takes to win a flag, it's all very good. But these types of players don't excite me. They are good for the culture, and they help strong teams with gun players to finish the job off. I just don't think Byrnes has the talent required to actually make any significant impact on our list, be it next year or the year after that. He isn't a gun midfield and he isn't a key position forward, which are the two things we desperately need. That doesn't mean we shouldn't try to fill some of the other holes in the team, as we have, but you and I both know that this signing is pretty minor in the grand scheme of things. It's about as exciting as drafting Magner was. Not very. I wish I could get excited about minor wins, but this team has sucked the life out of me by continuing to be absolutely woeful year after year, drafting poorly and developing poorly. So you'll excuse me if my only reaction to this signing is "meh", but I honestly feel nothing, good or bad, about Byrnes coming to the club. And again, this has nothing to do with Byrnes as a player, and I wish him all the best and I truly hope he makes us a better side, no matter how minimally.3 points

What about Dawes for Morton? That is sort of pick 43 points

The Ox also dismissed his value vehemently only a day or 2 ago. Seemed harsh at the time. Mark Allen compared him to the Ox as a player and I think Shwarta nearly belted him...what an insult!2 points

If Rivers does go I think it is worth playing Martin as a defender again. He is too uncoordinated to play forward and isn't damaging enough as a ruckman.2 points

3 days.... So when we get Viney can we scrub all the Viney threads which are 90% speculation and start off fresh, with a new Viney thread, heralding all that is our new savior, or what?2 points

Can't really agree with the above. He hasn't put a foot wrong this year, being our most consistent and reliable defender before jammed into a forward role he didn't want but performed to the best of his ability. Will be a bad loss, but life will go on.2 points

Seriously got to love the trade period, I thought being brought up a Catholic, tooth fairy, Easter & Christmas was the biggest time in your life when you heard fanciful stories, well I think teh trade period well and truly replaces those old myths2 points

If Jack wasn't a F/S selection I doubt we'd be having this conversation as neither GC or GWS would be looking at him as their first selection. I would like to think however that we would and if we were then we'd have to take him at 3 or 4 because he wouldn't be there at 13 or 14.2 points

Byrnes won the Tom Harley Award, which is given to the player who best demonstrates the values of the team and the club on and off the field. Sounds like exactly what we need.2 points

Won the team leadership award at the Geelong B&F last night and was given a resounding ovation even though he was leaving. Seems like a bloke our young guys might like and listen to. Costs close to nothing. Cannot see a downside. Welcome to the MFC Shannon.2 points

I just read this too. I think if Jack now comes out and tells Malthouse to politely go away, it could be a good show of faith for the club. If not, it could look pretty bad.2 points

I don't always agree with Curry and Beer (aka stakka) in fact I never agree with him, but I'm glad we don't have the number one pick this year because we'd just pick the crowd favorite (Whitfield) and if he turns out to be less than perfect we'd cop it all over again. Jack will burst on the scene and shut up those that want to put [censored] on the club and with Trenners, Jones, Tapscott and maybe Wines we will have some serious toughness at the club. Number 3 has turned up some very good players over the years.2 points

Please tell me you are being deliberately ironic.2 points

I truly hope we don't get Wellingham. We're trying to change the culture of the club, and you don't do that by bringing guys who have achieved little and yet think their sh*t don't stink. Also he happens to be just a good ordinary player. I'd much rather go after Farren Ray. Would probably cost less, and contribute more.2 points

It's fine, it's just we are making them think that we think that they think we know that they think we don't know what they think, and that we wont do what we might or might not do what they think we think we might do. Everything will be fine... just fine.2 points

Melbourne won't say it and Rivers has been a fine servant, but I'm guessing that privately they won't be all that disappointed if Rivers goes. If he was a full-back or centre-half back it would be different, but he's a third tall and we have Watts, Garland and Davis that can play that role. And he spent half the year as a makeshift forward. After the poor public relations with some other former players they're making all the right noises, but I don't think they're concerned at all. Just my guess.2 points

Ah is is just so great for us to have so many really positive true supporters. So, he may not have been able to break into the strong Cats team, but he is renowned as a hard worker and has big match experience, so should add to the MFC lineup. But there is no pleasing some folk. And welcome Shannon - we are not all negative tossers by the way.2 points

The Western Bulldogs had asked about Dawes’ status in recent weeks, but their interest has not yet significantly advanced on that. Carlton, Richmond and St Kilda all said they would not pursue Dawes. Read more: http://www.theage.co...l#ixzz28Hc9qdZb Pies options for a deal are decreasing. Very interesting that his former Coach is not interested and yet his club is desperate for a power forward. What does that tell you? If Wellingham prefers the West, I can see a player swap for Dawes. Pick 4 and Dawes should never be mentioned in the same sentence and I apologize for doing so.2 points
