All the clubs get lots of money from the AFL and always will. Us being a "charity case" is one of the biggest misnomers in the wider community.5 points

you are 100% right - we cannot know what he is thinking therefore those on here saying that he knew exactly what was he was saying are guessing exactly the same way as those who say it was a throw away line after too many wines are also guessing. So in absense of knowing what he was thinking he can only be judged on what he said without any "tinting" and for the CEO of the league to say to a CEO of a club that he should be at a different club (or head of the AFL) is entirely inappropriate.2 points

The win against the bombers last week was great, but we MUST back it up with a similar effort this week or it will be simply seen as an anomaly. I'm not saying win or it's nothing, but I want the pies to come off the ground and know they've played us.2 points

Gorilla forwards. Or forwards that are any good. Geelong had two very average forwards in 2007 (Mooney and Ablett). In 2009 they had Mooney and Hawkins. Again they were hardly superstar players then either. And Hawkins played half a game in 2011. West Coast had Lynch but he was hardly a superstar. Collingwood lost with Cloke and Dawes. St Kilda lost with Reiwoldt and Koschitzke. Port Adelaide kept getting done with Tredrea. The pertinent question is actually whether you can name any team of the last 15 years that won a flag with anything less than an outstanding midfield unit in the premiership year. The simple answer is that you cannot. For the time being, Mitch Clark fulfils one of the big key forward roles. We can continue to develop Cook, McDonald, Sheahan, Fitzpatrick, Gawn, Spencer etc whilst we build midfield strenght. If they start seeing the ball 70 times a game like the Geelong, Collingwood teams of recent times, watch how good our forwards will look then!2 points

I had a look at the training session this morning at Gosch's Paddock. It was just terrific to see 3 guys who have been missing in action all year. Jetta, Gawn and Evans were running laps and finished with kick-to-kick (3 players in a triangle). Max looked in very good shape and appears to have bulked up a bit in the upper body. The official injury list has Jetta and Evans returning in 4-8 weeks, with Max out for the season, but it looks like he should be fine for the first day of pre-season training for next year. Petterd was mostly walking laps. He's officially out for another week so he may have to wait till the next Casey match on June 24 to get some matchplay. I didn't see Bartram, Fitzpatrick, Jurrah, Viney or Taggart anywhere. Today's session was relatively short - not much more than an hour and finishing at 11ish, and consisted of a handball session, a short passing session, and some matchplay. The movement out of the backline was good with some effective run and carry from Blease, but we struggled to hit the targets on the forward 50. I'd also like to see them score goals in their matchplay. The play seemed to stop once the ball got into the forward 50. In contrast, the Collingwood players were finishing off their work in the adjacent oval. The highlight was the full-on wrestling match between Jade 'the snake' Rawlings and Jack Watts. Both players would be fined by the AFL in a real game. Rawlings used a lot of his extra weight to advantage. Frawley Blease and Martin are listed as 'test' but they all got through the full session this morning. To summarize today's session in one word - noisy. They were in good spirits this morning. No surprises there. Go Dees.1 point

Hate for a training rapport to get off track and turn into a Beamer bashing session...1 point

WHAT? Jamar signs for three years? THREE YEARS? Beamer also states he wants to be a demon for life! Golly gosh according to some media people (I refuse to call them experts) the senior players weren't happy about Neeld and also not being in the leadership group. So far the senior players have a funny way of showing their unhappiness.1 point

This was never in doubt in my mind. I heard him say on air more than once that once the offer was on the table he'd sign it, and (at risk of earning Range Rover's wrath), I believed every word he said. Three years is surprising, but pleasantly. Another so called "disenfranchised" player showing a huge amount of faith in the club.1 point

Tell the Hawks supporter at work we are chasing Buddy and Hodge, we're not, but if they can spread that [censored] then send the ball back over the net.1 point

A good/great key forward or in fact 2 of them can improve a midfield . Suddenly a midfield group have 2 terrific targets . The midfield can be more decisive in their actions , for various reasons . The good forward knows where to lead , can play in front all the time etc etc and in general provides a better target . Good key forwards have the effect of straightening a team up . It's hard to measure but it's a reality . And it can extend , and often does , to the half back line . As an example , Collingwoods half back line of Davis , O'Brien and Shaw grabbing the ball , running through the lines and launching it towards their twin towers (either down the middle or when they went wide) Good key forwards add confidence to a team . Cloke would be of enormous benefit to our team .1 point

Great news . Mark may well have got a bit more cash elsewhere so it's a credit to him to sign now and get rid of all the speculation . You'd reckon that Moloney will follow suit now . We need to stitch up quite a few others now , not the least being Jones , Blease , Cook , McDonald , Howe , McKenzie and Rivers .1 point

lol i seen that i actually nearly spat my drink out, HIRD HAS LOST THE PLOT i take it he was talking about joel dropping the knees into jetta you see that 1000 times a game hirdy i guess he missed the one fletcher did on blease that sent him from the ground was much much worse1 point

Maybe he's finally realised that senseless shouting, pointing at no-one at stoppages, and general chest-beating behaviour have no place in Neeld's new playing environment. Hopefully he's understands the path back to the leadership group is through actions and work ethic, not by bullishly barking orders at younger players.1 point

To say that Lebron was on fire would be an understatement. His 45-15-5 performance was the first in a final since Wilt Chamberlain in 1964. The Celtics fans obviously appreciated it and rewarded him accordingly with a celebratory beer shower! Bring on Game 7.1 point

This actually is a big statement. All the crap about the senior players and the rift with Neeld being put out there, then Jamar goes and re-signs for 3 more years. Big slap in the face to all those reporters suggesting things. It shows that the culture is growing down there this signature and that the senior guys are onboard1 point

Yep, as I've said earlier I think he will stay so I guess we are talking about the principle here. The developing midfield group you've mentioned plus players like Frawley, Watts, Garland, Blease, McDonald as a group are where the value is in my opinion and I wouldn't like us to tip the balance by bringing in a Cloke and risk loosing one or a couple of these guys or to cause some dissent in the group as a whole. I also think there may be opportunties to pick up a good young GC or GWS player that would be a better fit that we may miss or a Freo player if Cloke does move there. You asked whether I thought we would be a stronger chance for a flag with a Cloke, Clark forward line and midfield maturation and I guess this is the argument. My concern is that it would bring disharmony to the group and be conterproductive. So I only think we would be a stronger chance if we could guarantee everything would be happy and all the players were on the same track, I just don't think it would be the case.1 point

To me a club should only make small profits. All money generated should be pumped back into the club to hopefully make it a better club. When our figures are published it will show an increase in revenue and and increase in expenses mainly with money being put into our football department, this is where money needs to go, the better we become the more revenue we will generate. We start winning games we get bigger attendances, Better financial fixtures, higher membership, more free to air games which results in higher returns from sponsers. On the AFL hand outs, this is to balance the draw, this year we get home games against Brisbane, Western Bulldogs, St Kilda, Collingwood, GWS, Fremantle, Port, Adelaide, Richmond, Gold Coast, Hawthorn, to me that draw is a financila disaster 6 of our 11 home games against interstate clubs 2 against smaller Vic based clubs.1 point

Was just about to post the same thing. We have significantly increased our football department expenditure, along with all the off field issues, and we are still tracking in the black. I struggle to see why on earth you would sack somebody in this situation. I think it is ridiculous to think that Cameron is at fault for our poor skills out of the back line and our inability to spread dangerously from the midfield. It's not an easy gig being CEO of Melbourne, a lot tougher than some of the other clubs around town, and I think Cameron is doing a good job.1 point

It's really sad that with each passing year the game loses more and more of the colourful figures who made my enjoyment of the game as a kid so delightful. Condolences to the family and all Footscray people.1 point

I prefer these threads talking about how many games we are going to win as opposed to what draft pick selections are we going to get. No idea how many we will win but anything above 6 would be fantastic given our start.1 point

I never said Jones is not talented. He clearly is. Nobody who lacks talents manages such a long run of games as Jones has. I was simply pointing out that Jones gets the most out of his talent, while others more talented than him don't. Fair to agree that Jones isn't the best skilled player going around, but few have had better more consistent seasons, especially in such a poorly performing team. And that is a credit to his character. He has made the most of every opportunity, worked on his deficiencies and added more strings to his game. I wish Sylvia took a leaf out of Jones' book!1 point

It's not negative comments re Cloke as such from me, it's more that I don't think it's the best use of cash. Yes you do need to spend $$ to win flags but name the last team to win a flag with one player earning far and above what anyone else in the team were getting. It certainly wasn't Geelong, Collingwood or Hawthorn. The money has been spent on facilities, development, recruiting and the like with the salary cap being well spread among the group.1 point
-
I can't believe the negative comments towards Cloke!! Our coach spent time with him in 2 GF tilts. One being successful. Cloke and Clark would be great. Gotta spend $$ to win flags these days. Train up the mids with continued youth injections. If people do not want Cloke, who should we target? At present we struggle to kick 10 goals a game.1 point

Thought that we've been into Travis Cloke ever since the "Get your hands off our players" quote from EE some months back . I think we might be able to 'Front end' his contract (like we did with Clark?) so as to not effect our ability to pay our players more equitably post 2013 . GWS did it with T$ . If you take into account that 24 of our players are out of contract then there could be a decent amount of room in our cap next year . A big wad of cash in his 1st year is a huge inducement . Any player would love a big front ended contract . A bird in the hand ............. And he immediately adds wins to our team . If Cook and McDonald come on in leaps and bounds then we end up with a nice problem . You've got to take your chances when they come your way . Obviously there is the Neeld connection as well and right now we have a vacancy at CHF . I've made up my mind - go get him !1 point
-
I just think it tips the scale out of balance, if we are paying a player over odds it effects the team dynamic. Geelong built a team culture and players were payed under their market value to hold that team, no player would have accepted that deal if say Ablett was on a huge contract, that's why Geelong had to let him go. They lost their star and still won another flag. Collingwood have kept their stars on lesser money that's also why they won't pay Cloke what others will offer, it tips the balance. He knows this and it is more likely he is really pushing for the extra year. If he gets 5 he stays at the money offered. I'm for building from within as you state you are and I also like you think if we find a good fit we need to look at the player but not at the risk of the team. Players will be falling out from GC at the end of this year and GWS the next, lets not blow it all on one man. I don't think the money and term that is being quoted for Cloke is worth it. In fact I think it is a beat up to be truthful.1 point

Not sure if others have noticed this as much as I have, but as much as I love Nathan Jones, could someone please teach him the art of the pretend handball attempt when he is tackled to the ground, costs us a free kick nearly each week. Perhaps Jordie could take him aside and have a word, because he is a machine at it. But apart from that, as you were Nathan.1 point
