Rohan Connolly sticking the boot into Channel 7's coverage. And he is absolutely spot on IMO. http://www.theage.com.au/afl/afl-news/cmon-seven-get-with-the-program-20120429-1xsyn.html4 points

Some say he paid his money so he is entitled to express his opinion. I don't agree. I have played sport at a decent enough level for many years to know sometimes things just happen on the field that you cant explain. Sometimes the harder you try the worse it gets. I was never gifted with talent but there was no one fitter or who gave more. This is why I hate hearing people on here slate Barty, Joel Mac and others in the past they give their all for the red and the blue and they have played more AFL games than I and most on Demonland. Armchair sports stars tell you how to do things and what they would do, but it aint easy. Some players make it look easy and have natural talent, desire and the ability to go that extra bit. While others have talent and give what is their best. Players of all different levels and talents are pieces in the team jigsaw and it is so hard to get them all together for the ultimate. Yes I get angry with the boys at times but never would I personally attack any of them, I don't have the right no matter how much money I spend or put into the club. I do not know the mindset or the personal circumstances of the individuals. Im not right or wrong its just my personal opinion4 points

Where to start on this.... We have a coach who is very clear on gameplan and this will either make or break him or the club. One thing for sure he wont change it and or tolerate players not showing the discipline to stay the course. Stuie...on the face of it of course you are correct. Our current list played flashy football that occasionally got us good wins against teams that were susceptible to a loss interstate. On top of that our better performances generally included players through the midfield who haven't really made it on the field this year. (Think Scully, Sylvia, Moloney not to mention Jurrah up forward) However as stated by others the trending of this gameplan was not obvious to anyone (just review threads on DB and lack of gameplan last year) including people at the club. Our team although seemingly showing improvement was not really on track to do anything long term in terms of matching it with the good teams. This year we are almost 5 games in and now we see this new gameplan and edge being implemented by a coach who by the way also lives in Northcote. This coach Mark Neeld will stay the course and clearly needs time to adjust the list to the way he believes this team needs to play long term to win. To give you an idea according to GPS data the players are running 30% further this year during games than last year. The gameplan pushes them right to the edges of the boundary and then asks for counter attacks to be made by getting the entire team to switch to the other side of the ground at pace. This asks alot of the players in terms of fitness. That is why they make really poor decisions and have been generally fading after halftime. When Mark arrived he knew straight away the list wasn't where it needed to be in terms of fitness to go with a gameplan that could challenge for the ultimate success. But he is determined to change this. People percieved us with all the investment in coaching and a new fitness regime that we would automatically be better. Reality is that was never going to happen. There is understandably a lack of patience from many...we have all been through a lot of pain and with loss after loss doubt creeps in. But let me tell you this. Mark Neeld has belief that what he is doing will generate long term success and he will not bend from that. People point to his media appearances being a distraction and that perhaps he shouldn't have said 'the hardest team' comment. But reality is that is his aspiration and he totally believes in it. Further to that, leaders at the club have expressed to me that they totally understand and believe in the gameplan and what is occurring. More than one has confided that under DB they really struggled to know the gameplan. With Neeldy they know what it is and agree totally with the direction. So people get ready for a season of more pain. I expect people will now jump on me for trying to impart what I know. Some will try to discredit me. Some will continue to pull apart Mark and his gameplan. They will continue to pot the 4 game coach expecting him to have turned us into a powerhouse by now. I wish everyone had the privilege and benefit I have had to spend time with Mark and other leaders of the club. When you actually see what is happening inside it is far more tangible to understand the facts as opposed to the many opinions sprouted about the club. I'll give you another example. When Mark started the club didn't even have the IT programs all other clubs had and he had to convince the club to purchase it and implement it. There are many more embarrassing examples that Mark has had to address that were big gaps in terms of getting the foundations right for the football department. It kills me to see our own people on this site make uninformed comments based purely on what they see on gameday. Although it is entirely understandable. (Believe me it kills me too) I wanted to write to try and provide some sort of solace to those that may wish to believe what I say. I see in many the passion and heart and pain that to have in my heart. All I can ask each of you is be realistic with expectations. Please don't blame Mark who is a brand new senior coach trying to change the club and set it up for success. Some senior players have a lot to answer for but I know you all know that. It is not accepting mediocrity just realistic based on where we have come from. In my job I am fortunate to have a lot to do with a number of clubs and I must confess MFC has been the club by far who are always behind trying to catch up. Mark is leading the way with fixing this disparity but it doesn't all happen and click overnight. The comment from Mick Malthouse about things other than football was an articulation of the fact the club has been paving the foundations and multiple levels to finally put everything into the Football team. Believe it or not good times are ahead but not without a lot of pain first. Stick with the Dees the light at the end of the tunnel will come!4 points

Frankly there are lots of unathletic idiots out there and we have a proportion as our supporters - though not as large a cohort as within Collingwood and Richmonds supporter base of course! People who have never played football, people who dont know the rules people, who cant acknowledge that there are two football teams playing - that cant give credit to (for example) Lenny Hayes finding a way through to kick a goal against us or other great opponent play or people who expect instant results from young players.3 points

Very impressive. I like that this has come out now, and not just before round one as a fluff piece to make us look good. The doggies and saints game has given me confidence that we are heading in the right direction, albeit against opposition that aren't killing it at the moment. But what I liked is when our structures held up the saints found it very difficult to move the ball freely, and that is something the Neeled is trying to instill. Fact is our current gameplan requires high level fitness, which we may not be quite at yet. This is year is unfortunately another education year, but I feel we're pushing forward.3 points

By no means am I standing up for Watts but if you had a quick glance down the other end you would have seen possibly the best key forward of his generation get toweled up by a hard running kid who has played less than 10 games. Surely everyone can see the congestion and conditions played a major part in this and most likely impacted on Watts' game. In saying that I would still like Watts to hit the contest harder. He isn't a stick figure anymore and needs to realise that.3 points

Nothing annoys me more than supporters who get upset when people make negative comments. I never abuse our players and never will, but I get annoyed when we do stupid things and I express that frustration. I'm an emotional footy supporter and I make no apologies for that. I don't swear (loudly enough for anyone to hear anyway ), and I will stand and cheer everything good that we do, so if me expressing my emotions annoys people then they can stay at home. If you want to watch in silence watch it on TV. Otherwise harden up. Our players hear worse from our coaches everyday.2 points

Energy Watch back in the news: "DISGRACED energy broker EnergyWatch and its former CEO Ben Polis face hefty penalties for making misleading claims in a series of high-profile ads" What i liked was when this was reported on SEN news it goes something like: "EW, the company dumped by MFC as their sponsor face hefty penalties etc etc..... It reinforces to the public that MFC has integrity and puts its values above financial considerations. In a funny way we might end up benefiting from the whole palaver. We've got two good sponsors, an improved image and the month of crisis we had (which this issue was but one of several calamities) may have helped galvanise the club.2 points

I thought when Jones was in the forward 50 he was a great crumbing forward. Anticipated well and hit the packs at speed. Not saying he should be a permanent crumbing forward but he just showed the value of a good crumbing forward, something we have missed for some time.2 points

I have said it once, have said it twice and will say it again, Jones will be our Chapman (and not just in the "eggshell blond" stakes)... in fact, he may turn out to be even better given the rate of his improvement over the past 2 and a bit seasons.2 points

Ahahaha what rubbish I am reading!! Draft a skinny 17 year old long term prospect, then trade his before he has played 50 games because he doesn't come out and dominate straight away!!??2 points

One of the other factors that should perhaps be borne in mind is that it would be counter-productive to make multiple unforced changes while the team is learning to put the new gameplay into place. It's much more difficult having a lot of players trying to learn something new than it is having the odd new player coming in and learning how the rest of the team is playing. Unless players are not following instructions or not making the required effort, they should be given a decent run. If they're improving (and in my view, Davey definitely is) they should be supported. On the other hand, if they show themselves to be a dud, back to the twos. Footy players will make mistakes and I'd much rather that they stretch themselves rather than just occupy a space.2 points

Here's a link DeeTV put up of Neeld's first address to the players. Even though we're 0-5 with an awful percentage and a very good chance at being 0-11, I really like this guy. You can tell he means business and that he's driven to succeed. I think we've picked the right man for the job, and I'm looking forward to seeing the team grow under him.2 points

Against st kilda the thing he needed to do to get involved in a wet game was throw his body in there. And he didn't do it enough, and was largely anonymous. I'm a fervent supporter of Watts, but I think he needs to be dropped to teach him that the current level of physical commitment is not enough to continue getting a game. He's been given leniency in the past, but it's time to step it up another level. Confidence in his body may be an issue, but a standard needs to be set. This would help him build the required confidence.2 points

186 shouldn't be tolerated again, this team is in the process of creating a game style to see that it doesn't have to be. Small minded and short sighted "supporters" need to look past the end of thier nose.2 points

Yep was a very good effort - now let's see them back that up next week and the week after and the week after. That's the issue with MFC sides over the years they do that for one week then think they've done enough and drop off again. That is the minimum standard, we shouldn't have to praise them just for having a dip - the next step is to do that on a consistent basis and get some wins on the board.2 points

The incessant zooming in on the player with the ball, particularly at frees or marks, while we see absolutely nothing of the strategic placements ahead of the play pisses me off no end.2 points

That is really the WORST post i have ever seen and you have no idea. Watts will never be traded from melbourne he is very important to the future of this club, Mark neeld loves what jack has done from rounds 1 to 4 so that is also crap about neeld saying he needs to do more he said that in September lastyear. Go ask neeld how jack has been going since he said that. He had a shocker yes but 1 game does not make a long term project that Melbourne has put years into trade bait. Just rubbish mate sorry. Jack will be a great of this club in 10 years i have no worry saying that . Mark neeld will train this boy into a man. Trade bait lol.2 points

Can we drop the Cook/Darling comparisons already. We, along with every other club, skipped on picking up Darling in the first round. He plays for West Coast now and we have Cook. Nothing we can do to change history.2 points

One of the best VFL games I've been to with an epic finish. All the Melbourne players put in decent games also. My take on the Melbourne players. Bennell: Probably the best game I've seen him play, silky smooth running off half back, took the oposition on, set up several attacking thrusts and took some gutsy marks in defence also. Funnily enough a mate of mine who I was with today who doesn't watch a heap of footy I told him that Bennell was a spud and would be first to be delisted at seasons end. By the end of the match my mate thought I was an idiot. Blease: Did a lot of the hard stuff that he often doesn't do. A lot of chasing and takling, and was good to see him kick 3. Very good finshing skills and his final goal was a great kick in the circumstances. Didn't have as many line breaking runs as you'd expect, but that's cause he was winning more of his own ball. Couch: I love this kid. He just keeps going and going and going. I didn't even realise that he had that toe injury. Was on the bottom of every pack and the goal he kicked at the 30min mark of the last quarter from a stoppage was one of those goals that quality players just will themselves towards. The second Moloney, McKenzie, Jones or Magner miss another match, Couch has to come in! Davis: Very good in defence. A lot of timely spoils and created some run off the backline. Thought he could have done a bit better and stopping Goldstein from marking in the goal square towards the end, but otherwise another good hitout soldiering the backline. Fitzpatrick: Played an important role today. Was the only tall target in the forward line today with Cook & Williams not lining up and presented all day, his kicking does need work though. Competed hard when helping out Spencer in the ruck, but Goldstein was massive today. Lawrence: Was busy all day and constantly looked dangerous despite not kicking a goal. Nearly kicked a beauty in the last but just missed, like Fitzpatrick he needs to work on his kicking, but his pressure was very good. Whether he makes it or not though I'm still not convinced either way. Nicholson: Suprised he got as much of it as was mentioned. Tried hard all day to provide some run but he did butcher it a couple of times. I still do rate this guy though. Petterd: Didn't get a heap of it and only kicked the 1 goal while spending most of the day forward line, but I thought his 3rd qtr was brilliant. Spent a lot of the 3rd term in the middle when Casey were into the breeze and his work inside helped Casey get on top in the middle that term and win the clearances and only loose the term by a goal when into the breeze. Will be a chance for a recall. Shehan: Best game I've seen him play for Casey, very similar to Davis's game and took some real good marks deep in defence. His use of the ball was a lot better this week then I'd seen the last few weeks also. Spencer: Tried hard but was dominated by Goldstein in the ruck. Wasn't affraid to throw his weight around though and no doubt will be better for todays ruck lesson. Taggert: Didn't see a heap of him but he did do a few nice things playing mainly off the half back I thought. For his first game though he wasn't bad. One thing that was evident though was that he wasn't affraid of the hard stuff. Great win by Casey today as they were clearly missing tall targets in the forward line. With Jurrah, Cook, Williams & Martin to come back though this will be rectified.2 points

Come on guys, you can't just drop players who frustrate you or who you don't like much, nor players who have played 1 or even 2 bad games. Sellar. No he didn't have a good game but on a wet night he gave a constant physical target in our forward 50 and he ensured St. Kilda didn't dominate the stoppages when Jamar was resting. If we do not have anyone better he stays, but he is likely to make way for Clark. Dunn's centring the ball that led to a Saints goal will really annoy Neeld, and he might get dropped for what looks like a clear breach of a team rule. But Dunn has done a great job on Murphy last week and Fisher last night and is playing his role well. Watts, Trengove and Tappy will benefit little from being dropped. They need to play continuous games with each other over a number of seasons. IN: Frawley, Clark, OUT: J MacDonald, Sellar Also, we might need Blease's pace for players like the Cats Christensen, Stokes, and even Wojinski played well in the reserves. Blease does not deserve a place out of form but we need more pace than just Bail and Morton. Unsure who to drop for him though.2 points

I think yesterday showed why our coaches are the coaches and the fans are just the fans. Quite a lot of egg to be wiped off faces in the selection thread.2 points

People want poor performing Melbourne players to be replaced by players dropped to Casey who have not shown anything special. Unfortunately for Martin, Fitzpatrick and Petterd they have not demanded a call up from Casey. Couch has been unlucky. At the Casey level all MFC listed players should start week in week out to demand a call up. I am not sure rewarding Martin, Fitzpatrick & Petterd not on form but on individuals having a bad games does us any value. Secondly the changes need to be for like or based on next weeks opposition. There is proof though that persisting with players like Morton, Davey & Tom Mac has seen them find a little form and has helped the team structures develop..2 points

Davey and Morton - both talented, albeit much maligned players on this site, are starting to show a lot more intensity now. And that's a great sign, because the upside to these guys is IMO enormous. I reckon Neeld loves Bate - and I can see why. He's a footballer's footballer. Definitely in our best 21 under Neeld - strange to think he was on the outer just six months ago. Jones - unlucky not to be Captain. Neeld's turning him into a weapon. Watts and Trengove didn't have great games - but there's no need to worry about these guys. Both players will be in Sheahan's top 50 in the next few years. Magner - unbelievable rookie pick. You could shoot him in the head with a gun, and he'd get back up and smash someone. He could win the B&F this year. Tom McD - what a great game from a 6 gamer. I literally couldn't believe it. We really missed Moloney and Sylvia in the first few rounds. Gotta love Bartram and Jordie Mac. We won all the important stats, except obviously the points on the scoreboard. All in all, the signs are there. In fact, some really, really good signs. Neeld is making this previously soft list, a hard list.2 points
-
If i see the same intensity, improvement and structure as last night 0-11 whilst not being good will not bother me as much as yo-yo performances. Keep up that intensity and the wins will come, seen some players grow in confidence last night as they realised they weren't as bad as they were in the first 4 rounds. They boys played a lot more one on one, concentrate on beating their opponent, ran and spread better and the game plan was tweeked a little with a few more risks. Maybe just maybe the messages are sinking in and the players are getting used to Neelds game plan2 points
-
It's also easy to forget that Jones is only 24. I know it feels like he's been around for an eternity, but his best footy is ahead of him. Each year the weaknesses in his game seem to diminish a bit more. I couldn't be happier with his effort and his form this year.2 points

Robert is a former coach who got sacked and has a soft spot for other coaches in the same position. But he has got it so so wrong here. He says we fired Bailey after one poor match (the 186 game). That is not true. Round 2 - Hawthorn - the Dees were 28 points up just before 1/2 time. By the start of the last quarter we were 40 points down. arguably our worst 3rd Q in memory. Round 6 - West Coast. Game over at quarter time. arguably our worst 1st Q in memory. Round 8 - North. MFC 25 points up early in the second. Nearly 40 points down by 3/4 time. Round 10 - Carlton - Another 6 goal performance from MFC. Carlton doubled our score. Round 12 - Collingwood. Another 6 goals from the Dees. Collingwood kicked 10 in a row in the last quarter. Round 15 - The Dogs. We played a middle ranked side and got done by 64 points. They killed us in the last and i believe Bailey was lucky to see out the round. Round 19 - Geelong - 186. In every one of these games, the opposition got a run-on and we couldn't deal with it. After 4 years with Bailey we did not have a game plan to cope with adversity. Robert is very selective with his stats. He says Melbourne won 8 1/2 games in 2010 and because we won 7 1/2 games by round 19 (of 24 rounds) therefore we were improving slightly, but the stat is misleading. Yes we did have 3 big wins against GC, Freo and Adelaide in 2011, but these teams were struggling with form, injury and inexperience. It's the same story with the win over Essendon. We caught them during their 5 game losing streak. Compare the 2011 results with the previous year and we clearly did better in 2010. 2 close games against Collingwood; just falling short against the Dogs and Hawthorn, and thrashing another final 8 side in Sydney. We were going backwards in 2011, and that's why Bailey was fired.2 points

I'm pretty disappointed with a lot of Dees fans openly booing and abusing Cale at the game. He may not be your fav player but he Is wearing a red & blue jumper. I'm not huge fan either but he had 22 disposals 5 tackles & 5 In50's, was far from our worst and I think has been getting better each game this year apart from a couple of turnovers. I thought Essendon fans were a pack of pricks last year for openly booing Stanton whenever he touched It. I'd like to think we're better than that.2 points

Biased I know, but the boy has lifted in his last two game. Main point is the kid layed 2 massive tackles on Mcevoy and dropped him, 5 tackles in total. Whilst he doesn't look much bigger, the kids core strength it really getting there. Bench bench and fly laterals improved by 22% from last years pre-season. Clearance work was great and looked hungry, KEEP it going SON!!!2 points

We did NOT tank for two years. There was one game the coaches tried to lose and that was against Richmond and we were still in front when the siren went. We were rubbish in 2008 we didn't tank. Watts will make it once he gets a couple more pre-seasons under his belt to build his fitness and strength. He has only had one full pre-season and is only just turned 21. Trengove has to be carrying an injury, I can't believe he is as poor as he has been playing considering what he has shown in his first couple of years. The kid will be a gun in the Hodge/Bartel mould. Could not give one stuff about the other scumbag. But we have the compo picks this year which looks like it will get us a top 3 player plus Viney and another top 20 picks. We have undertaken one of the biggest rebuilds/lists turnovers ever seen and are still yet to come out the other side. Our patience will be tested but I think the signs are there and Neeld is the exact kind of coach we need.1 point

The replays, shots of coachs, players spewing up or B grade celebs when the game is going on really, really annoys the hell out of me. Last night when Jordie smothered Goddards kick and other stuff was going on and it was all missed in real time then they had to try catch up with a replay and still didn't do justice to what was happening. It's really amatuer hour and I don't think the producers have a good feel for the game.1 point

TELL THEM THEY'RE NOT TRYING by Mean Gene It's the easiest thing on earth to kick a man when he's down and the pundits have certainly had their day with the Melbourne Football Club of late. That's not to say that some of the criticism hasn't been well earned based on the Demons' form so far this year but it also says a lot about those critics who are falling over suggesting things that they must surely have plucked out of their backsides. Like the superficial rubbish coming from Paul Roos who accused Melbourne players of not trying on last week's On the Couch. He claims that the playing group has already destroyed one coaching career (that of Dean Bailey) and that it is "well on the way to doing the same to Mark Neeld." I don't see it that way and I don't agree with the doomsayers. Sure, things don't appear all that flash after five games but I don't think anyone can accuse the players of not having a dip in their three goal defeat at the hands of St. Kilda. Not when the Demons went into the game minus their full back and full forward, with a key playmaker coming back from injury in a green substitute vest, their most exciting forward still a week away from his comeback game for Casey and a handful of promising younger players either injured or working away to improve their game in the VFL. Yes, their are some excuses and explanations in this paragraph but they are things that need to be considered when looking at a young team devastated by external events and injury that is adapting to a brand new game plan. In spite of all that, Melbourne was able to put in by far its strongest performance of the year for almost the full four quarters until a more experienced St. Kilda outfit rallied to score the last two goals of the game. Melbourne was well served by Nathan Jones who brushed aside criticism from some quarters of his midfield role. He collected 27 disposals, booted two important goals and added passion to the midfield. Jack Grimes heralded his comeback to the team with a great 27 possession game. Melbourne was firing early with strong play from Brent Moloney and scored the game's first two goals. It soon lost the initiative to let the Saints in for a 9 point quarter time lead but fought hard in the wet conditions in the second term. Halfway through the quarter an Aaron Davey goal gave them the lead and when Rohan Bail snapped truly it had opened up to a 10 point advantage. Although the Saints steadied to take the lead into the main break, the scrap continued through the third quarter and well into the last. Tell players like Jordie McKenzie and James Magner who hustled their opponents all night that they weren't trying. Tell it to Cale Morton and Clint Bartram who played their best games in ages or Mark Jamar who killed them in the ruck. Or try telling it to Tom McDonald, with a handful of games under his belt taking on one of the games superstars in Nick Riewoldt. The game proved there is a light at the end of the tunnel for Melbourne and that they need to continue working hard at learning the new style of play. I'm betting the improvement will continue next week when Melbourne takes on Geelong at the place which is symbolic of its current tormented state. There will be no 186 next week. All the commentators talk way too much anyway . That would be ok if it were radio . I used to like that red button you could press on foxtel . Mute the commentators and just hear the crowd noise . We don't need commentators when we're at the games . I don't know why stations insist on the "play by play" commentary . Surely they realise we can see what's going on . I believe we need less "commentary" and more in depth and behind the scenes stuff . For instance we often have no idea who is in the forward line . A widescreen view would be better as well . The coverage of Soccer is generally done a lot better . Not that I'm a big fan of that sport . BT at least adds a bit of colour and humour .1 point

His first half was hardly deplorable. Errors will come as he's a genuine key position sized bloke playing in just his 6th game and he isn't known for his skills. Frawley copped a bit early as well. I'm happy for McDonald to spend most of his time down back. He can stay in with Joel Macdonald replaced by Frawley. However we need to develop a CHF as well. So what I'd probably like to see is a bit of a rotation between him and Watts as CHF/3rd tall down back.1 point

I reckon its time Blease steps up and has a game good enough to pressure for a recall to the seniors. We're crying out for outside run and he's in the magoos (as he should be BTW). Without being too dramatic, if he's not at the crossroads with the dess he's approaching it. Always been a fan and he had a really bad break in his leg to overcome but he's had a full pre season and a month or so of footy so i think we can now start to to expect some good footy from yet another high draft pick.1 point
