Adding a Darwin Game?

Featured Replies

Tom morris reporting Gold Coast want to go to 1 game instead of 2 from next year, playing in Darwin.

While Melbourne is open to adding a Darwin match to its Alice Springs outing (under the right circumstances).

No thankyou.

the whole benefit of having a game in the nt is purely money - $1m as part of our sponsorship from nt govt - and avoiding having a 'home' game at the docklands carpark

for the last several seasons, we've been scheduled a home game there, so the 'benefit' of a home game in alice has been negated

will we still have to cop that if we get a 'home' game in darwin as well?

  • Demonland changed the title to Adding a Darwin Game?

I'd say the 'right circumstances' is having the bye directly after the Darwin game and a suitable amount of $$$ being provided.

And as @whatwhat say what says, not having a Marvel home game. Same logic as Richmond selling games to Tassie this year - if we are going to have to host a game at Marvel, the club may say “may as well make a stack of cash by selling that to the NT”.

Not a fan of this at all, and would love it if we scrapped the Alice Springs game as well.

Would much rather play 2 home games at Marvel and 0 in the NT, because most of the supporter base can see their team play. (yes I know at the expense of revenue)

I recall a few years ago that Pert was trumpeting the fact that we cancelled our home game in Darwin for the benefit of bringing that home game to the MCG for a total of 10 home games. Now we might be going back to the future.

We are probably due to be the away team to the Suns in the next year or so anyway. Might as well get paid for it.

What I find aggravating though is that the Suns were gifted the zone, but now they have a little success from their academy and on field they want to dump its responsibilities. Spoilt nepo baby [censored]. They have achieved nothing to date. Would lmao if we got the home game and the AFL scheduled the Suns as the away team!!

This would be the circumstances. Make money instead of a loss.

All non-tenants to Marvel have to play there at least once so exemption from that.

Nuffies will hate it but Dees fans don’t go to Docklands so it’s just a game they won’t go to in a different place

Not a fan of this idea. Went to the game where Adelaide ran us down and Weeds [censored] the bed at the death. Nobody up there gives a rats [censored] about the MFC. Locals get handed out free red & blue merch but mostly follow the SA & WA sides we play against.

No no no no no

We’ve gained no competitive advantage whatsoever from hosting the Alice Springs game, and in fact I think it’s actually been a disadvantage, costing us games we would have been more likely to win at Marvel

I can’t see Darwin being any different, especially because of the conditions up there (which admittedly the Suns have been able to use to their advantage, but likely because they play in a warmer climate already)

Let’s focus on lining our pockets by increasing memberships and match day attendance, and at least giving our members a chance to see us play at Marvel if need be

Hate this idea: I go to every game we play at Marvel we are a Melbourne based club FFS

Great idea, love travelling to Darwin and the Alice, nothing to be scared of, having a weekend away.

I don't understand this. Why are we being scheduled at Marvel at all if we can just move that game to another venue?

Im not aware of the impact we are having in Alice Springs but with the emergence of the Pickett connection and hopefully soon AMW to the senior ranks.

This would be the platform to create a marketing machine to promote these indigenous talents to the masses in NT.

But in saying that is this just a temporary measure until the AFL included a team in NT in 10-15 years time?

We invest our time and resources into this region and get shafted at the end of the day.

Would be ideal to grab Port Adelaide to play up their each year to ensure a better chance at a win and secure our 1m sponsorship from the NT government.

The other thing about the Darwin give away is that the AFL would draw our game unfairly in a five day travel turnaround probably both ways to appease other bigger clubs and cost us dearly in losses

Bad idea, for 3 reasons,

1 Unlike Alice, Darwin is hot and humid that time of year and so it effects us in the following week

2 When we did play there previously AFL would always schedule us there just after the bye not before which just negates the advantage of freshening up after the bye.

3 We already sell a home game to Alice, we shouldn’t be in such dire straights that we need to sell more.

I've flown up with my family to watch the Darwin game in the past. It's a fantastic experience and adds a lot to the community. Would absolutely recommend going up there to other supporters if we started playing there again.

While it was warm and muggy, it's not as bad as going to Malaysia. And it's nice change from Melbourne weather in the middle of winter.

But I think Point 2 is the most significant. Don't know why the AFL have done this to us in the past. Would be easy thing to address IMO.

I do agree with this comment. We've been lucky to not have to face GC in Darwin since they started selling games in Darwin in 2022. North and Dogs have copped them twice.

The whole timing of this is so anti-climatic and tone death if there is truth to it from the MFC perspective. Melbourne supporters are loving coming to the MCG once again. We are playing box office type footy and the atmosphere in the stands is something we haven't seen since the 2018 finals series.

Instead of our 11th game being transferred from the Docklands to Darwin, I want my CEO to do all he can to transfer that home game from Docklands to the MCG - not to Darwin.

If it's good enough for Richmond to receive 10 home games at the MCG, it's good enough for us.

We used to have Darwin as an NGA zone which was taken off us and given to the nepo babies in Gold Coast. We are building a fortress in Melbourne. Hope we tell the AFL to [censored] off!!!

Send Collingwood there. It’s not just about playing the actual game in Darwin. It’s the effects of the humidity for the week after. Money can’t buy the vibe that we currently have in Melbourne.

I really hope we don't do it. I don't care how much they throw at us, the conditions are awful for the players.

I hope max gives some feedback.

Guessing Gold Coast will still keep the entire Darwin area as part of their NGA despite only playing games there since 2020 and now looking to halve their commitment.

Exactly.

No benefit in going I/S unless we have a long term plan & get something out of it.

Have we got many NT members ??

First we played home games in Qld, then Darwin then Alice.

Either find a long term arrangement that benefits us or scrap them.

It seemed as if the whole purpose of the Anzac Eve clash at the MCG between the Demons and the Tigers was building toward that single, unforgettable moment when Kozzie Pickett soared above Campbell Gray and all but fittingly etched his name onto the face of the 2026 Frank ‘Checker’ Hughes Medal.
